Human Population Through Time

It took 200,000 years for our human population to reach 1 billion—and only 200 years to reach 7 billion. But growth has begun slowing, as women have fewer babies on average. When will our global population peak? And how can we minimize our impact on Earth’s resources, even as we approach 11 billion? #humans #population #humanevolution #overpopulation Download the video in HD: http://media.amnh.org/sciencebulletins/AMNH_HumanPopulation_DOWNLOAD.mp4 Related content: Population Connection http://worldpopulationhistory.org/map/1/mercator/1/0/25/ UN World Population Prospects https://esa.un.org/unpd/wpp/ Real-time population counter http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ NASA EarthData https://earthdata.nasa.gov NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu Video credits: Writer/Producer AMNH/L. Population Control & MGTOW

11:03
"Hey Sandman, I'm a long time listener and first time donor. First a little background about myself. I was in the U.S. Navy for 6 years and while I was there I kept hearing constant stories about navy wives cheating on their husbands. I kept wondering why? MGTOW gave me the short and simple answer. That women are always looking for a better deal through hypergamy. I guess it doesn't matter if the woman's husband is serving in the Navy, if she is surrounded by other good looking men all the time, especially if those men are probably higher ranking, or better looking they will go after them. Anyway, I'm now out the Navy, and currently majoring in ecology. I came across something interesting: by 2050, the global population is projected to be over 9 billion people. Right now, our natural resources are rapidly declining and water is predicted to the number one concern in the near future. Fresh water only make up about 1% of all the water on Earth. Since the 20th century, water consumption has risen more than twice as fast as the rate of population growth. It is just too much of a coincidence that major western governments support feminism and the unfair family court system. So far, people are getting married less, and having less children. Maybe this was the western governments' plan all along? Maybe they want to slow the population growth as much as possible while they try to solve the resource crisis. What do you think, Sandman? Do you think the western government manipulated female nature on purpose so men won't marry them and further increase the population? Or am I just sounding like some kind of conspiracy nut-job? Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you." Well Dino_Might there are three sides to this argument and I will try and argue for and against all three sides and relate it back to MGTOW. The first side or group of people generally believe that there are no limits to the resources on this planet. Those people are living outside the laws of physics. They think we have limitless freshwater, oil, top soil, everything. So therefore if you're going your own way and choosing not to procreate you're going to end the human race. The second group of people believe we will find alternative sources of energy to replace oil and we will use these new exotic energies, some renewable and some like helium three from the surface of the moon to power our civilization to drive economic growth into the future. So once again it's perfectly alright to have as many kids as possible because technology and new energy will save us. So MGTOW are a failure in that society once again. The last group of people believe that we need to decrease the population because we are in fact running out of resources. POPULATION IN CHINA

05:44
Despite having the world’s biggest population, China has revised its three-decade-old ‘One Child Policy’ in a bid to encourage couples to have more children. So what are the implications? Today there are 7.3 billion people living on our planet and overpopulation is thought to be a serious global issue. Rapid population growth has brought pressure on economic and social development. It’s well known that China has the world’s biggest population with 1.3 billion people - equivalent to the populations of North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Western Europe combined. A big population may sound like a big problem, but in fact it can bring many advantages. A large workforce has helped China become one of the world’s biggest economies in just one generation. This has lifted 800 million people out of poverty and enabled China to build the largest education system in the world. But a big population also means greater pressure on resources. Finding the balance between population and resources is an issue that all governments face. China’s most famous population policy was ‘the one-child policy’. And China’s birth rate more than halved whilst the policy was in action. This means the growth of the population has slowed down – as expected - and the quality of life for people across China has risen. But China’s ‘one child policy’ also had unintended consequences. The size of its working age population is falling and around 15% of the population is now over retirement age. Most Chinese people rely heavily on their only child. There are now also more men than women in China and by 2020, there will be 30 million more men of marriageable age than women. In 2015, China revised the Population Law and encouraged couples to have two children. This could mean an extra 15 million babies born in the next 5 years.

Video: Millions of single Chinese men desperately seeking a wife

26:08
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN In China, the one-child policy has wreaked havoc. By encouraging the birth of boys rather than girls, an imbalance of the sexes has emerged. China now counts far more men than women. Millions of these men, now of marriageable age, are desperately seeking a wife - and they will do anything to try to find one, even if it means buying one abroad or even kidnapping a woman. Marjolaine Grappe and Christophe Barreyre tell us more in this documentary. The Chinese call them "Guang gun", "dead branches" which will never bear fruit. In short, men condemned to a life without a wife, without children, and without the hope of one day starting a family. In China, there are already millions of these bachelors in search of a soulmate and their ranks are swelling. Ten years ago, there was talk of the "curse of being born a girl". As a result of the one-child policy – in force until 2015 - millions of little girls were killed before they were born or just afterwards. Sometimes they were abandoned shortly after their birth. Most families preferred to give birth to a boy, so that he could carry on the family line. ►► Also watch our report: "China's second child flop" It turned out to be a demographic time bomb. Today, the “curse” has backfired on these boys, who are now men. According to forecasts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, one in five men will be unable to find a wife by 2020. China will have a surplus of 30 to 40 million men under the age of 19. That’s the equivalent of the entire population of young men in the United States. Trafficking of women In some regions, "single villages" have emerged. The few women who were there have left the area to look for a rich husband in town. So men who want a chance to get married have to move to other regions. Millions of young men flock to the south of the country and work day and night in the factories of the Pearl Delta, "the workshop of the world", while hoping to find a soulmate. But even here, women are in short supply. In desperation, some Chinese men prefer to run away or buy a woman abroad, often from Burma, Vietnam or Indonesia... Others give up. For some, anything goes, even if it means enlisting the help of traffickers and kidnapping a woman. We went to meet single men who are crushed by the mathematical impossibility of finding a spouse and prepared to do anything not to end up alone. They agreed to speak to us and to take us to the heart of this unlikely trafficking operation. A report by Marjolaine Grappe and Christophe Barreyre / Orientxpress Production. Japan has a strong population of virgins--both men & women

01:00
Japan officially is a country having a large population of virgins both men and women. Around 42 percent of men and 44.2 percent of women have admitted that they are virgins. According to the Japan Times, a new survey of Japanese people ages 18 to 34 found that 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not in a relationship. This study is carried out by Japan's National Institute of Population and Social Security Research every five years. Japan's demographic challenges are well-known. It's home to the world's oldest population and and also home to an astonishing number of single people. Despite government efforts to incentivize marriage and child-rearing, things aren't quite trending in the right direction. 🇯🇵 Finding Love In Japan | 101 East

25:46
Finding Love In Japan - 101 East The path to true love is never easy but in Japan, finding 'the one' has never been harder. Only a third of the nation's youth have been in a relationship. Many consider a romantic partner bothersome in a country famous for maid cafes, herbivore men and pop idol shows. For the government, playing cupid is now in the national interest. As the country's population rapidly declines, it's funding matchmaking events to help encourage marriage - and babies. Such events are also being embraced by reality shows, small towns and even monks who need a partner for their temple to survive. 101 East asks, can love find a way in desperate and dateless Japan? Climate change strikes it fiercest blow against the poorest, most vulnerable people around the world, according to a United Nations (U.N.) report launched today in London, urging policymakers to heed the role of women who make up the majority of the poor in combating climate change. Poor women in poor countries are among the hardest hit by climate change, even though they contributed the least to it, said UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid at the launch in the Royal Society of London headquarters. The U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) report warned that the poor depend more on agriculture for their livelihoods, risking hunger and loss of income when droughts strike, rains become unpredictable and hurricanes move with unprecedented force. The poor also tend to live in marginal areas, vulnerable to floods, rising seas and storms, noted The State of World Population 2009 UNFPA report, stressing that women bear the disproportionate burden of climate change as they make up the majority of the worlds 1.5 billion people living on less than one dollar a day. The report contended that the international communitys fight against climate change would be more successful if policies, programs and treaties consider the needs, rights and potential of women. It spotlighted studies showing women are more likely than men to die in natural disasters, with the gender mortality gap most pronounced where incomes are low and status differences between men and women are high. The UNFPA report also demonstrated that investment in women and girls particularly in education and health boosts economic development, reduces poverty and benefits the environment. It said that girls with more education tend to have smaller and healthier families as adults because access to reproductive health services including family planning results in lower fertility rates that contribute to slower growth in greenhouse-gas emissions in the long run. World Population Day 2009 - Educate Girls

01:01
Investing in Women is a Smart Choice No one knows yet what the full scale of this global economic crisis will look like. We do know that women and children in developing countries will bear the brunt of the impact. What started as a financial crisis in rich countries is now deepening into a global economic crisis that is hitting developing countries hard. It is already affecting progress toward reducing poverty. Policy responses that build on women's roles as economic agents can do a lot to mitigate the effects of the crisis on development, especially because women, more than men, invest their earnings in the health and education of their children. Investments in public health, education, child care and other social services help mitigate the impact of the crisis on the entire family and raise productivity for a healthier economy. Protect the gains achieved Investments in education and health for women and girls have been linked to increases in productivity, agricultural yields, and national income — all of which contribute to the achievement of the MDGs. Investments by governments worldwide have raised school enrolment rates, narrowed the gender gap in education, brought life-saving drugs to people living with AIDS, expanded HIV prevention, delivered bed nets to prevent malaria, and improved child health through immunization. www.unfpa.org

India's Solution To Population Growth: Sterilizing Women - Newsy

01:10
India is the world's top sterilizer of women. From 2013 to 2014, over 4 million Indian women had the surgery, making it the most popular form of birth control. At 1.3 billion people, India is projected to overtake China's population around 2028. India's solution is free sterilizations for men and women. The procedures aren't always safe. Patients describe filthy conditions and hasty surgeries. Sometimes women are paid to get sterilized or offered incentives like "cars, gold coins and drawings for prizes." In November 2014, 15 women died at two state-run "sterilization camps." Between 2003 and 2012, a total of 1,434 people died. Most were women. Only 1 percent of men undergo vasectomies because male sterilization isn't socially acceptable. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to improve India's health system. This year family planning centers will begin offering free injectible contraceptives. This video includes clips from News 7 and images from Getty Images. Overpopulation facts - the problem no one will discuss: Alexandra Paul at TEDxTopanga

08:37
Actress Alexandra Paul breaks the silence on one of the most taboo subjects of our time: human overpopulation and how to resolve the crisis that is adding 220,000 more people to the planet every day. In this fact filled talk, Alexandra discusses the overpopulation problems of 7 billion humans multiplying at a rate of 1 billion more people every 12 years and offers a simple solution: Transform negative cultural attitudes about the Only Child, and celebrate the short and long term benefits of small families. Alexandra reminds us that coercion in any form is not the answer to changing cultural and biological norms. Instead, rewiring our biology through strong cultural messaging, education of girls and empowerment of women are the solutions to stopping the current momentum towards 10 billion people on the planet in 40 years. Alexandra emphasizes that because each American born uses so many more resources than someone from a developing country, it is equally important that wealthy countries have small families. She discusses the economic tradeoffs of a smaller population in a world where capitalism reigns: because the capitalist system depends upon more and more consumers, there are strong forces at work to keep the numbers of people on earth growing. But at what expense? And since human numbers cannot keep getting larger forever, at what point will we change our ways? When it is too late? Most controversially, Alexandra believes that, if humans are to survive on this planet, the ideal family has one child and the ideal number of people on earth is 2 billion. "If that is too radical, then it is time for radicalism. Too much is at stake to be polite." This talk is full of overpopulation facts. MaximsNewsNetwork: STATE OF WORLD POPULATION REPORT UNFPA, THORAYA AHMED OBAID

03:21
MaximsNewsNetwork: 18 November 2009 - UNFPA: The latest edition of the State of World Population report by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) shows that women bear the disproportionate burden of climate change, but have been largely overlooked in the debate on how to address problems of rising seas, droughts, melting glaciers and extreme weather. The report will be launched Wednesday 18 November in London. The 2009 edition of the State of World Population report, to be launched on 18 November 2009 by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), shows that women bear the disproportionate burden of climate change, but have so far been largely overlooked in the debate about how to address problems of rising seas, droughts, melting glaciers and extreme weather. Poor women in poor countries are among the hardest hit by climate change, even though they contributed the least to it, according to UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid. The poor are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and the majority of the 1.5 billion people living on $1 a day or less are women. The poor are more likely to depend on agriculture for a living and therefore risk going hungry or losing their livelihoods when droughts strike, rains become unpredictable and hurricanes move with unprecedented force. The poor tend to live in marginal areas, vulnerable to floods, rising seas and storms. Research cited in the report shows that women are more likely than men to die in natural disasters—including those related to extreme weather—with this gap most pronounced where incomes are low and status differences between men and women are high. The State of World Population 2009 argues that the international communitys fight against climate change is more likely to be successful if policies, programmes and treaties take into account the needs, rights and potential of women. In South America, many Bolivians are victims of a warming planet. High up in the Andes mountains...a disaster is in the making as many of the glaciers are melting at rates surprising even the experts. At risk are tens of thousands of people who rely on the water as a source of life The Caribbean is no stranger to hurricanes, but the frequency and force of these storms have increased over the past few years. 2008 was a particularly devastating year for countries like Cuba and Haiti. Vietnam's economy is finally thriving after decades of war. But a new and insidious enemy - global warming- is hitting this southeast Asian country, with deadly force. The Power Of Choice - State of the World Population 2018

Choice can change the world. It can rapidly improve the well-being of women and girls, transform families and societies, and accelerate global development. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development reinforces these principles by making reproductive health and rights a specific aim. In fact, reproductive rights are integral to realizing all the Sustainable Development Goals. That is the power of choice. #SWOP2018 #UnitedNations Learn More: https://www.unfpa.org/swop-2018 Produced by: UNFPA

US Prison Population: The Largest in the World

Find LearnLiberty on Facebook: http://on.fb.me/X9qijG The United States incarcerates more people than any other country in the world—more even than China or Russia. Prof. Daniel J. D'Amico explains that as of 2010 more than 1.6 million people were serving jail sentences in America. Professor D'Amico suggests that "prisons are not what we think about when we think of America, and they shouldn't have to be." According to D'Amico, a free country should not have 1.6 million people in prison, and a fiscally responsible country cannot afford to. As Prof. D'Amico points out, it is time for Americans to recognize that the U.S. criminal justice system is desperately in need of reform. Learn More: 1. UN World Population Day: Invest in the future of women and girls

01:03
United Nations, New York, 9 July 2009 - Noon briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Marking World Population Day that will take place on Saturday, 11 July 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the global financial and economic crisis threatens to reverse hard-won gains in education and health in developing countries. Among those hardest hit are women and girls. The theme of this years World Population Day focuses on investing in women. Even before the crisis, women and girls represented the majority of the worlds poor. Now they are falling deeper into poverty and face increased health risks, especially if they are pregnant. According to Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, UNFPA Executive Director, complications of pregnancy and childbirth are leading killers of women in the developing world. And maternal mortality represents the largest health inequity in the world. This health gap will only deepen unless we increase social investments, maintain health gains and expand efforts to save more womens lives. Only 14% of World Population Has Longer Second Toe and This Is Why

01:38
You have probably noticed this, at least from the perspective of aesthetics. We talk about the so called Greek foot, where the second toe is longer than the big toe. This phenomenon can be seen among only 14% of the entire population on the planet. Even though some people consider it ugly and want it to disappear, the Greek foot is usually connected to strength, intelligence and sexiness. On the other hand, there are some circumstances that should be considered. A Greek foot can cause leg problems and pain if appropriate shoes are not worn. Remember that your legs are exposed to the entire body mass when you are walking or running, so the shape of your feet also influences what you will feel in your legs. People with a Greek foot often experience pain in the feet and that is something that cannot be ignored. The first thing that should be done is wearing the right shoes. In ideal circumstances, the feet have enough space and the toes are not cramped. The golden rule is: never wear shoes that cause pain. Special shoe pads can help you reduce the inflammation and pain in your feet. The shoes must be made of a soft material which helps your feet feel comfortable. If you have a Greek foot and you feel pain, visit a doctor so the foot can be analyzed. Don’t allow for further complications to appear.

MaximsNewsNetwork: STATE of the WORLD's POPULATION REPORT U.N. POPULATION FUND (UNFPA)

01:49
MaximsNewsNetwork: 20 October 2010 -- UNFPA: United Nations Population Fund: New York - Discrimination against women not only exposes them to the worst effects of disaster and war, including rape, but also deprives their countries of a prime engine for recovery, according to the 2010 State of the World Population report launched today (20 October); "This year's report is about the three Rs: resilience, renewal and redefining roles between boys and girls and men and women," head of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Thoraya Ahmed Obaid said at the official launch in London of the report. The report uses stories of individuals affected by conflict or catastrophe in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Haiti, Iraq, Jordan, Liberia, the occupied Palestinian territory, Timor-Leste and Uganda to bring home its message. It shows how communities and civil society are healing old wounds and moving forward, while stressing how much more still needs to be done to ensure that women have access to services and have a voice in peace deals or reconstruction plans. Obaid added that "when women and girls suffer deep discrimination, they are more vulnerable to the worst effects of disaster and war, including rape, and less likely to contribute to peacebuilding, which threatens long-term recovery." The case examples are the first time the annual study has been based on reports from the field to show how countries that have experienced conflict or disasters are on the road to recovery, however rocky the path and uncertain the destination. A principal recommendation in the report is that Governments need to seize the opportunities arising out of post-conflict or post-disaster recovery to increase the chances that countries "are not just rebuilt, but built back better and renewed, with women and men on equal footing, with rights and opportunities for all and a foundation for development and security in the long run." The release of the report "From Conflict and Crisis to Renewal: Generations of Change" coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Security Council's landmark resolution 1325, which aimed to end sexual violence against women and girls in armed conflict and to encourage greater participation by them in peace-building initiatives. ...... Rural women - agents of change fighting poverty, hunger and climate change

00:42
Rural women make up over a quarter the world's population and majority of the 43% of women in the global agricultural labour force. They till the lands and plant seeds to feed nations. They ensure food security for their communities and build climate resilience. But when it comes to owning land, accessing agricultural inputs, financing and technologies for climate resilience, they are left far behind men. 25:01
With its harsh, windswept hills and six-month long winter, the remote Faroe Islands are hardly where you would expect a large ethnic minority from tropical South East Asia. But since most local young women choose to move abroad, women from the Philippines and Thailand are helping to reverse the population decline of this tight-knit, traditional society. Nestled between Norway and Iceland in the north Atlantic, life on this archipelago of 18 islands is a shock for those from the tropics. Yet this remote community is proving that it’s worth going to the far reaches of the earth to look for love. China's Leftover Men | Insight | Full episode

49:33
Since China's one-child policy was put in place in 1979, the government has managed to avert some 400 million births. While the policy has helped curb population growth and accelerate the pace of modernization in the country, it has also given rise to another major problem - an acutely lopsided or uneven gender ratios. There's currently just too many men than women in the country. By 2020, it’s estimated that there'll be 40 million more men than women in the country, leaving at least 12 to 15% of young adult men with no hopes of marrying. How did China get itself into such a predicament? How will the gender imbalance impact China's economic prosperity and social unity if the problem is not addressed? Has it done enough to reverse the trend? Insight investigates.
