22nd September 1888: First edition of National Geographic Magazine published

03:09
The National Geographic Society was established in Washington D.C. in January 1888. Founded by just thirty-three men, the Society’s first President was the lawyer and financier Gardiner Greene Hubbard whose lay interest in science and geography perfectly embodied the Society’s creation ‘for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge’. Nine months after the Society’s foundation, the first edition of its journal was sent to its 165 charter members. Consisting mostly of short technical articles, the magazine struggled to increase its readership for the first few years of its existence. Following the election of Alexander Graham Bell as President and the appointment of the new editor Gilbert H. Grosvenor, the early 1900s saw the magazine begin to focus more on pictorial content. Although criticised by some members of the Board of Managers for being ‘unscientific’, the increasing use of often pioneering photographs soon helped to secure a much wider audience. Initially only available to members of the National Geographic Society, the magazine is now available to purchase on newsstands and through direct subscription around the world. The creation of nearly 40 different local-language editions has resulted in a global circulation of more than 6.5 million copies per month, reaching an estimated 60 million readers. Revenue from sales of the magazine help to fund scientific expeditions and scientific research as well as sponsor travelling exhibitions, making the National Geographic Society one of the largest non-profit scientific and educational organisations in the world.

The two athletes will attempt to summit via Everest's seldom visited West Ridge, and their alpine-style climb will be documented by Richards for a print feature in National Geographic magazine early next year. The expedition is sponsored by National Geographic and The North Face, with support from Montana State University, which has created online science curriculum about the Himalayas for fifth graders. National Geographic - World's Best Island - Sri Lanka

02:04
National Geographic - World's Best Island - Sri Lanka The words mean "resplendent isle," and the natural charms of this pear-shaped island in the Indian Ocean that nearly kisses the southeast tip of India are indeed splendid. • Peopled mostly by Sinhalese, the result of waves of Indo-Aryan emigration, the island is mostly flat, with gentle mountains in the south. • The Portuguese and the Dutch once waged proxy wars here; by 1802 the island was a British colony. • This century saw bloody civil war, as the Liberation Tigers, representing minority Tamils, fought the Sinhalese and their domination of politics and economics. • In 2009 the Tigers were vanquished. • Today peace prevails.

Inside the Amazon: A Photographer’s Story | Nat Geo Live

13:25
Manú National Park, deep in the Peruvian rain forest, is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. The park and surrounding areas are home to some 10 percent of the world's bird species, countless insect species still unknown to science, and about as many tree species as are found in all of North America. It is also home to "uncontacted" tribes such as the Mascho-Piro who have chosen to live in isolation for a century, a few of whom are slowly beginning to make contact with outsiders. National Geographic photographer Charlie Hamilton James ventured into Manú National Park to photograph life in this remarkable park for the June 2016 issue of National Geographic magazine. Hear James tell stories from his time living in a small village among the Matsigenka people who are beginning to make contact with some of the isolated people living in the rain forests—and enjoy his stunning photos of the people and wildlife of the Amazon. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Nat Geo Live: http://bit.ly/MoreNatGeoLive About Nat Geo Live (National Geographic Live): Thought-provoking presentations by today's leading explorers, scientists, and photographers. Vintage National Geographic Magazines

Vintage National Geographic magazines ranging from 1964-1974. I found these in a travel trailer I got for free a few years ago. These have some interesting articles in them, but in this video, I mainly just show the ads. By the way, these magazines have a LOT of ads in them! Back in the day, it must have been so irritating to get these, only to find out only half the magazine has actual content. Oh well, it's fun to look at the ads 40-50 years later!

Why #PopeFrancis Loves Social Media | National Geographic

The pope doesn't have an email address. He's never even been on the Internet. But he's a social media star nonetheless, thanks to his sweeping influence and his faith in technology as a force to bring people together all around the world. Cincinnati Zoo Cheetah Sets New World Speed Record in 100 Meter Run | National Geographic

00:53
Sarah, an 11-year-old cheetah at the Cincinnati Zoo, set a new world speed record this summer during a shoot for National Geographic magazine. She first earned the title of world's fastest land mammal in 2009 when she covered 100 meters in 6.13 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 6.19 seconds set by a male South African cheetah named Nyana in 2001. On June 20, 2012, Sarah shattered all 100-meter times when she posted 5.95 seconds. By comparison, Sarah's 100-meter run was nearly four seconds faster than the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt of Jamaica, whose fastest time for the same distance is 9.58 seconds. Sarah's top speed was clocked at 61 mph. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Cameras captured the record-breaking run on Sarah's first attempt on a specially designed course certified by the Road Running Technical Council of USA Track & Field. Sarah and the Cincinnati Zoo's other four cheetahs in the Cat Ambassador Program regularly run at the Zoo's Regional Cheetah Breeding Facility. The documentation of the run was supported in part by National Geographic's Big Cats Initiative — http://www.causeanuproar.org — a long-term effort to halt the decline of big cats in the wild. Cheetahs are endangered and their population worldwide has shrunk from about 100,000 in 1900 to an estimated 9,000 - 12,000 cheetahs today. The Cincinnati Zoo has been dubbed "The Cheetah Capital of the World" because of its conservation efforts through education, public interpretation, and the captive cheetah breeding program. The Zoo's Regional Cheetah Breeding Center is one of only four similar facilities in the United States managed by the Species Survival Plan. In total, there have been 64 cheetah cubs born in Cincinnati.
