Using Styles in Word

[What are styles?] Styles give your document structure and hierarchy by letting you format each level of text differently. For example, title text usually uses a more prominent style than a sub-heading does. Using the automated formatting of styles also keeps the spacing throughout your document consistent, since you're not manually adjusting the spacing in every section. Here's the styles gallery. As you can see, each style is a distinct combination of font type, font size, font color, border design, alignment, and spacing—kind of like an outfit. A style lets you apply this entire "outfit" with just a few quick clicks, instead of manually changing the elements one by one. If you're writing a formal report, chances are, you've got headings. Headings are like mini titles that section up your document so it's not just one running block of text. Applying styles also helps Word create a map of your document, which comes in handy when generating an automated table of contents. [Applying styles to your headings] Now that you have a better idea of what styles are, I'll show you how to apply styles to your headings. Here's an unformatted version of the document we were just looking at. First, you want to highlight the heading that you're applying styles to. Make sure you're in the Home tab of the ribbon. In the gallery of pre-made styles, select Heading 1. You'll see that your heading text now reflects the Heading 1 style. Do this for all the headings you wish to apply the Heading 1 style to. [Modifying heading styles] Let's say you want to customize the style of your heading. To do that, you'll have to modify the default style applied to your headings. In this document, my headings are marked with the Heading 1 style. So I'm going to right-click Heading 1, and select Modify. Now I can modify my style in any way I want. I can change the font, as well as the font color. I can also make more advanced changes by clicking this Format button. For instance, if I don't want this huge spacing before each heading, I can adjust the spacing in Paragraph. 10 point spacing gives your heading a good amount of bordering space, so I'll go ahead and replace 24 with 10. When you're done, just click OK. And that's it! All of your headings applied with the Heading 1 style automatically get updated to reflect the style changes you just made. So you can see now that my headings are in Arial Black instead of Cambria, and red instead of blue, as they were before.

How To Change The Default Theme in a Microsoft Word Document - Part 2

All right, now we go back to our original Word document. How do I make the Aspect theme for this document the default theme - so whenever I open a new document in MS Word, it will automatically have the Aspect theme instead of the Office theme. To do that, go to the Home tab and in the Styles section of the Home tab ribbon, there's a Change Styles tool or button. Click on the down arrow and click on Set as Default. Now the Aspect theme will be the default theme for any new Word documents. To test this, open a new Word document and paste in the placeholder text. Now the body text font is Verdana. Go to the Page Layout tab and click on the down arrow of the Themes button, and you'll see that Aspect was automatically chosen for this new document. That proves that I have successfully changed the default theme to Aspect. Now let's go back and make Office the default theme. First, go to the Page Layout tab, click Themes and select Office. Go back to the Home tab and click on the down arrow of the Change Styles button on the Home tab ribbon. Click on Set as Default. Now Office is again the default theme for Word 2010. Open a new document to test this and paste the placeholder text. Now the font used for the body text or Normal style is Calibri and Office is now the theme of this document. In this screencast I have changed the default theme from Office to the Aspect theme, and then reverted back to Office as the default theme.

HOW TO CHANGE THE DEFAULT THEME IN A MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT - PART 1 Hi, This is Vi Adkins of www.ForemostResumes.com. In this video tutorial I'm going to show how to change the theme of a Microsoft Word 2010 document and how to change the default theme and then change it back. I have a new Word file open and I've inserted some placeholder text in the document. I'm going to select all of the text by holding down the Control key while pressing the A key on the keyboard. Then I'm going to copy the text to the clipboard by holding down the Control key while pressing the C key. Now, when I open a new document I can paste this placeholder text into it. As you can see in the Home tab ribbon at the top of the screen, this document uses the Calibri font for the body text. So I can see what I'm doing with this file, I want to turn on the Show/Hide button in the Paragraph section of the Home tab ribbon. Now I can see the carridge returns. I've opened the Styles panel on the right side of the screen. To show you how to open the Styles panel, I'm going to close it and opening it again. To do that, go to the Styles section of the Home tab ribbon and click on the little angled down arrow in the bottom right hand corner of that ribbon section. That opens the Styles panel. These Styles that you see listed in the Styles panel are determined by the theme of this document. What is the Theme for this document? To find out, go to the top of the page and click on the Page Layout tab. On the left side of the ribbon for that tab, you'll see a Themes button or tool. Select the down arrow of that tool and you see that the Office theme is selected. That means that this document is using the Office theme. The Office theme determines which fonts are used, which colors are used, which effects are used, and which styles are used. Now, let's go ahead and change the theme to another Built-In theme. Click on the down arrow of the Themes tool in the ribbon and change the theme fo Aspect. Instantly, we see that the font size has changed. Going back to the Home tab ribbon you can see that the body text font is has been changed from Calibri to Verdana. To confirm that, go to the styles panel, click the down arrow by the Normal style and select Modify. In the Modify Style dialogue box you can see that Verdana is the Body text font used for this theme. Click OK to exit the dialogue box. If I open a new document, will the theme be Office or Aspect? I paste my placeholder text into the new document, and I see from the Font section of the Home tab ribbon that Calibri is the font used for body text. Going to the Page Layout tab and clicking on the Themes tool down arrow, I see that the Office theme was automatically used as the theme for this new document.
