Invasions of the Sea Peoples: Egypt & The Late Bronze Age Collapse

08:41
The years between around 1500 and 1200 BC are often cited as some of the most prosperous that the world had ever seen. The Eastern Mediterranean world inhabited by the Egyptians, the Hittites and the Minoans, as well as numerous smaller states around them, was a truly cosmopolitan system rarely seen in world history. Greek and Hittite trade goods regularly show up in archaeological sites in Egypt, whereas Egyptian hieroglyphs and trade goods are found in places such as the island of Crete and Mycenae. One shipwreck off the coast of Turkey carried goods from nine different states aboard. As evidenced by substantial diplomatic communications as well as trade, the world of the Late Bronze Age was a vast interconnected system. The culmination of an unbroken cultural line which had existed since the first cities three thousand years before. Little did the inhabitants of these lands know however that from around 1200 BC their world would catastrophically and violently fall apart in a decades long cataclysm known as the Late Bronze Age Collapse. Sea Peoples: The 1200 BC System Collapse

18:01
In the 12th century B.C., after centuries of brilliance, the civilized and globalized world of the Bronze Age came to an abrupt and cataclysmic end. Kingdoms fell like dominoes over the course of just a few decades. No more Minoans or Mycenaeans. No more Trojans, Hittites, or Babylonians. The thriving economies and cultures of the late second millennium B.C., which had stretched from Greece to Egypt and Mesopotamia, suddenly ceased to exist, along with writing systems, technology, and monumental architecture. Cline examines the real history of Troy and delves into the archaeological discoveries (which continue to the present day) that help to answer the questions above. The End of Civilization (In the Bronze Age): Crash Course World History 211

12:58
In which John Green teaches you about the Bronze Age civilization in what we today call the middle east, and how the vast, interconnected civilization that encompassed Egypt, The Levant, and Mesopotamia came to an end. What's that you say? There was no such civilization? Your word against ours. John will argue that through a complex network of trade and alliances, there was a loosely confederated and relatively continuous civilization in the region. Why it all fell apart was a mystery. Was it the invasion of the Sea People? An earthquake storm? Or just a general collapse, to which complex systems are prone? We'll look into a few of these possibilities. As usual with Crash Course, we may not come up with a definitive answer, but it sure is a lot of fun to think about. Sea Peoples

01:54
Please watch: "The 10 Hottest Sex Positions Ranked By YOU" ➨ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkRFntsbb8k -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- During the late Bronze Age, civilization was progressing at an impressive rate in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean regions. Kingdoms rose, order was established, and technology advanced. The Mycenaean and Minoans had intricate palaces in Greece and Crete, the Hittites dominated what is now Turkey. And the Canaanites controlled what would become the holy land -- Israel, Lebanon, and Jordan. But in the years surrounding 1200 B.C., all of the would change. Over the course of a single generation, all of those civilizations would be almost entirely wiped off the map, and those that did survive would be set back a thousand years, losing the ability to write and turning back the clock on the sophistication of their art, architecture, and pottery in the hundred years to follow. This event was part of what is known as the Bronze Age collapse, and it remains one of the largest dark spots in historians' records. And one of the causes of this bizarre collapse was the mysterious "Sea Peoples" -- a technologically inferior, unaffiliated group of seafaring warriors who raided the lands and are often credited with the collapse of these once-great civilizations. The problem is, historians still have little if any idea of where these warriors came from, or what became of them after their conquest finally ended in Egypt. Also unknown is how the Sea Peoples managed to conquer civilizations hundreds of years more advanced in weaponry. But without solid records from the time, and with only scattered details of the origins of these strange raiders, we may never know their true identity. 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed (Eric Cline, PhD)

01:10:18
From about 1500 BC to 1200 BC, the Mediterranean region played host to a complex cosmopolitan and globalized world-system. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. When the end came, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms collapsed rapidly. With their end came the world’s first recorded Dark Ages. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today. Professor Eric H. Cline of The George Washington University will explore why the Bronze Age came to an end and whether the collapse of those ancient civilizations might hold some warnings for our current society. Considered for a Pulitzer Prize for his recent book 1177 BC, Dr. Eric H. Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology and the current Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at The George Washington University. He is a National Geographic Explorer, a Fulbright scholar, an NEH Public Scholar, and an award-winning teacher and author. He has degrees in archaeology and ancient history from Dartmouth, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania; in May 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree (honoris causa) from Muhlenberg College. Dr. Cline is an active field archaeologist with 30 seasons of excavation and survey experience. The 3200-year inscription revealed that 'mysterious sea people' were from Anatolia.

03:58
The 3200-year inscription revealed that 'mysterious sea people' were from Anatolia. An ancient inscription in the language of Luvi, found in 1878 near Afyon, was deciphered for the first time. A group of Dutch and Swiss backcountry research revealed that the inhabitants of Anatolia, who had a share in the end of the Bronze Age and who came from the sea as 'mysterious marine people' in ancient Egyptian documents, were the native peoples of Anatolia. According to the Independent, experts have succeeded in deciphering ancient 3200-year-old inscriptions on ancient hieroglyphics in Turkey. Researchers say that archaic writing can be the answer to one of the greatest finders of the Mediterranean archaeologist. According to the report, a frieze made of limestone of 29 meters in 1878 was found in Beyköy village, 34 km north of Afyonkarahisar. The French archaeologist George Perrot copied the writings before taking the villager limestone to use as a building material on the base of a glass. THE LONGEST HYDROGEN FROM BRONZE CALL ' The ancient inscription stated that the bronze is the longest hieroglyph of the remains of the ancient Luvi language which can be read by only a few people in the world. New finds came out of a group of Swiss and Dutch archaeologists. One of the 20 people in the group who can read Luvi language around the world. Fred Woudhuzien is also present. Woudhuzien made the translation of the ancient inscription. 'MY MESSENGED SEA PEOPLE'S IDENTITY REMOVE' It is noted that the text can shed light on how the advanced and powerful civilizations of the Bronze Age collapsed. The ancient text tells how the kingdoms of Asia Minor (Asia Minor) established a united navy against the Hittites and conquered the coastal cities of the Eastern Mediterranean. The researchers indicate that the text was printed by Kupanta-Kurunta, the king of Mira from late Bronze Age kingdoms in 1190 BC. According to the letter, Mira's Anatolian civilizations occupied ancient Egypt and other regions of the Eastern Mediterranean before and after the end of the Bronze Age. Archaeologists have long reported that the uncontrolled and sudden collapse of around 1200 BC dominated civilizations was partly due to the influx of water from the sea. The famous Trojan War, which started as a result of the attack of the Mycenaean Civilization against Anatolia, also happened at the end of this period and started the "Dark Ages" (the first period of the Middle Ages), which will take place for centuries instead of the Bronze Age for demolishing the civilization of the Mikenler on the winning side. However, it has long been debated who these mysterious sea people whom today's academics call 'Trojan Sea People'. In ancient documents in Egypt, it was stated that mysterious sea people invaded Cyprus and Syria. 'ONE OF THE BIGGEST PULSE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN ARCHEOLOGY CAN BE SOLVED' The copy of the text follows the death of James Ancellaart, a British antiquarian historian, in 2012. The copy of the text of Melleart's son is the President of the Luvi Researches Foundation. Eberhard gave it to Zangger. A Swiss linguist and a specialist in the Luwian language, Dr. Zangger evaluated the findings with these words: "The Luvian from Western Anatolia certainly contributed to the end of the Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean and thus one of the greatest puzzles in the Mediterranean archeology could be reasonably resolved. The full text of the deciphered text will be included in the scientific journal "Proceedings of the Dutch Archaeological and Historical Society" in December 2017.

MYCENAEANS : THE LOST CIVILIZATION - Full Documentary

45:26
Mycenaean Greece (or Mycenaean civilization) was the last phase of the Bronze Age in Ancient Greece (c. 1600–1100 BC). It represents the first advanced civilization in mainland Greece, with its palatial states, urban organization, works of art and writing system. Among the centers of power that emerged, the most notable were those of Pylos, Tiryns, Midea in the Peloponnese, Orchomenos, Thebes, Athens in Central Greece and Iolcos in Thessaly. The most prominent site was Mycenae, in Argolid, to which the culture of this era owes its name. Mycenaean and Mycenaean-influenced settlements also appeared in Epirus, Macedonia, on islands in the Aegean Sea, on the coast of Asia Minor, the Levant, Cyprus and Italy. The Mycenaean Greeks introduced several innovations in the fields of engineering, architecture and military infrastructure, while trade over vast areas of the Mediterranean was essential for the Mycenaean economy. Their syllabic script, the Linear B, offers the first written records of the Greek language and their religion already included several deities that can also be found in the Olympic Pantheon. Mycenaean Greece was dominated by a warrior elite society and consisted of a network of palace states that developed rigid hierarchical, political, social and economic systems. At the head of this society was the king, known as wanax. Mycenaean Greece perished with the collapse of Bronze Age culture in the eastern Mediterranean, to be followed by the so-called Greek Dark Ages, a recordless transitional period leading to Archaic Greece where significant shifts occurred from palace-centralized to de-centralized forms of socio-economic organization (including the extensive use of iron). Various theories have been proposed for the end of this civilization, among them the Dorian invasion or activities connected to the "Sea Peoples". Additional theories such as natural disasters and climatic changes have been also suggested. The Mycenaean period became the historical setting of much ancient Greek literature and mythology, including the Trojan Epic Cycle.
ACOR Lecture: "Sea Peoples and Neo-Hittites" by Dr. Timothy P. Harrison, April 19 2017

01:06:21
About the lecture: Please note that the volume of the voice recording is quite low, we recommend listening to this lecture with head phones. Recent archaeological investigations and an expanding corpus of epigraphic finds have begun to challenge the prevailing view of the Early Iron Age (ca. 1200–900 BCE) as an era of cultural and political disruption and ethnic strife in the eastern Mediterranean, as depicted in the Homeric epics and the Hebrew Bible. The University of Toronto excavations at Tell Tayinat on the Plain of Antioch have discovered evidence for a powerful regional state associated with ‘the Land of Palistin’, comprised of an intriguing amalgam of Aegean, Anatolian (Luwian) and Bronze Age West Syrian cultural traditions. Palistin resurfaces in ninth century Neo-Assyrian sources as the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina, and is eventually destroyed in 738 BCE by the Neo-Assyrian empire builder Tiglath-pileser III, who transforms Tayinat into an Assyrian provincial capital.

Cline examines the real history of Troy and delves into the archaeological discoveries (which continue to the present day) that help to answer the questions above. Through an entertaining and incisive analysis of known data, Professor Cline provides a fuller, richer understanding of this historic clash.
Secrets of the Aegean Apocalypse - History Documentary

43:31
Around 1,200 BC, an ancient Armageddon destroyed nearly every known civilization. What could have caused it? The theories are many, but most now include one mysterious and massively destructive factor — a force only the Egyptians survived to name: The Sea People. Who were these warriors and how could they take down the world’s greatest powers in a span of just 50 years? Scale the dizzying heights of Crete’s mountain fortress with archaeologist Krzysztof Nowicki as he searches for clues. Programs such as these try to cover their shallowness with terms as secrets revealed, mystery, clues, etc. But when the viewer has carefully considered the presentation after viewing it, it is clear that little more is known than previously. “The foreign countries (ie. Sea Peoples) made a conspiracy in their islands. All at once the lands were removed and scattered in the fray. No land could stand before their arms: from Hatti, Qode, Carchemish, Arzawa and Alashiya on, being cut off [ie. destroyed] at one time. A camp was set up in Amurru. They desolated its people, and its land was like that which has never come into being. They were coming forward toward Egypt, while the flame was prepared before them. Their confederation was the Peleset, Tjeker, Shekelesh, Denyen and Weshesh, lands united. They laid their hands upon the land as far as the circuit of the earth, their hearts confident and trusting: ‘Our plans will succeed!’ In a couple of generations, about 1200 BC, several bronze age civilizations in the eastern part of the Mediterranean apparently collapsed. We cannot be certain that there was any connection among these. There is all but no hard written record as to why, beyond a few cryptic Egyptian accounts and paintings. According to this DVD, an un-named “sea people” descended upon the local villages and drove the residents to higher ground. Who these invaders were (assuming they existed), where they came from or where they went is a matter of speculation. Without hard evidence archaeologists are able to claim about anything they want to, and who is to say them nay? It all may sound scholarly but it is flimsy guesswork. Best Mermaid Caught on Tape - Sea Peoples Mysterious Creature are Real & Sightings on cam, Amazing encountered Footage Mermaids (Sea Peoples Creature), those half human, half fish sirens of the sea are legendary sea creatures chronicled in Marine time cultures. The ancient Greek epic poet Homer wrote of them in the Odyssey. The aboriginal people of Australia, called mermaids Yawkyawks, a name that may refer to their mesmerizing songs. 🇮🇹 🇱🇾 Rescue at Sea: Migrants in the Mediterranean | People and Power

25:01
As long as there is war, poverty and insecurity in Africa and the Middle East, migrants and refugees will try and seek a better life in Europe. For many years now, one of the principle transit routes has been the dangerous sea crossing over the Mediterranean between Libya and Italy. Images of anxious people crammed into small and manifestly unsafe boats run by human traffickers have become sadly familiar around the world, as have the stories of sinkings and drownings that tragically are regularly attendant on these journeys. As a result, and against a background of hardening anti-migrant sentiment in Europe, the problem of how to best respond to and control this phenomenon - and reduce the number of fatalities - has become ever more hotly debated. For the last five years, EU navies have maintained a presence in the area to discourage people from making the journey. And since 2017, the Libyan coastguard, with the active support of the Italian government, has also become more active, mounting aggressive patrols off its long coastline. Both the EU and Libyan authorities insist their actions save lives and disrupt the criminal networks that feed off the migrants' desperation. But their methods, focused mainly on deterrence, policing and security are increasingly at odds with those of other groups operating in the area since 2014 - NGOs running maritime search and rescue (SAR) missions to aid migrants in peril. In August 2017, Italy asked all NGOs working in the area to sign a code of conduct, which in effect put strict legal and logistical constraints on their ability to operate. As a result, by mid-2018, only four NGOs were left pursuing SAR missions in the Mediterranean and there had been a number of highly charged stand-offs with the authorities. In March for example, after a tense altercation between Libyan coastguards and a vessel from Proactiva Open Arms involving 218 migrants and refugees, the NGO's ship was impounded in a Sicilian port for a month, with the crew held under investigation by the Italian authorities for allegedly "conspiring to facilitate illegal immigration". Then in June 2018, Italy refused to let the Aquarius - a ship run by SOS Mediterranee and Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) - disembark 600 rescued migrants in Italian ports. When Malta also declined to accept them it became a Europe-wide dispute. Eventually, the migrants were off-loaded in Spain, but this and other incidents had a chilling effect on NGOs and for a time left the Libyan coastguard as almost the only rescue option in Central Mediterranean waters. Much of the opposition to the NGOs' activities seems to stem from a belief that their presence encourages migrants to embark on journeys they would otherwise avoid, or even, in the words of Italy's controversial new Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, that they act as a "taxi service". The NGOs reject this claim entirely, but it highlights the fundamental differences between humanitarian groups seeking to save lives on the open seas and those focused on trying to dissuade people from making the treacherous crossing in the first place. It also raises serious questions about the way that long-standing international maritime norms on nautical rescue are allegedly being ignored - with sometimes fatal consequences. What is clear is that when no-one is available to help those in peril, lives will be lost. In November 2018, the UNHCR said that more than 2,000 refugees and migrants have died on the Mediterranean route this year and that the number of drownings has escalated sharply. In September alone, the refugee agency said one of every eight people making the dangerous journey towards Italy had been killed. This, it said, was due in part to the "legal and logistical restrictions that have been placed on a number of NGOs wishing to conduct search and rescue (SAR) operations." While the agency acknowledged the efforts of the Libyan coastguard in saving lives where it could, it added that any vessel with the capability should be allowed to come to the aid of those in need. Moreover, anyone rescued in international waters should not be taken back to Libya where conditions are not safe. With access to both sides, we sent filmmaker Paula Palacios to investigate the background to this complex debate and what may happen next.

The Trojan War: The Hittites (Lecture 3)

Archaeology and the Trojan War: In this lecture series by Eric H.Cline you will delve deep into the Trojan war between the Trojans and the Greeks while separating fact from fiction. The Trojan War, captured forever in Homer's epic poem the Iliad, resonates to the present day in the popular imagination, and this magnificent confrontation continues to exert a tremendous influence on modern audiences. But did Troy actually exist? And if so, where is it located? Was the Trojan War actually fought? If it was, did it take place over the course of ten years, as Homer wrote, or was it a much longer series of battles? And why was the war fought? Could Helen's face alone really have launched a thousand ships? In this course, esteemed professor Eric H. Cline examines the real history of Troy and delves into the archaeological discoveries (which continue to the present day) that help to answer the questions above. Through an entertaining and incisive analysis of known data, Professor Cline provides a fuller, richer understanding of this historic clash.
Bronze Age Collapse (Ancient Dark Age) Sea People, Climate Change, Natural Disaster?

07:41
The collapse of Bronze Age civilization around the year 1177BC. Was it the invasion of the Sea People, climate change, natural disaster or a combination. The Uluburun shipwreck off the coast of Turkey contained glass ingots, ingots of copper and tin at the perfect ratio for bronze as well as weapons and iconography from across the eastern Mediterranean. This collapse cocincides with the tobacco, tobacco beetle and coca found in Egyptian mummies such as Ramses II. Tobacco, tobacco beetles and coca can only come from across the Atlantic, in the Americas!!! Ancient trade, it's about navigation. The Battle of the Delta Ramses III saves Egypt from the People of the Sea | New Discovery

05:28
The Battle of the Delta: Ramses III saves Egypt from the People of the Sea The ancient Egyptian pharaohs often commemorated military victories over their enemies by having them depicted on the walls of great monuments. One of the most famous conflicts recorded on the walls of an Egyptian temple is that of the Battle of the Delta, fought by the pharaoh Ramesses III against the invading Sea Peoples. The Battle of the Delta is thought to have been fought during the year 1175 BC. On one side were the Egyptians under Ramesses III, perceived by some to be the last great pharaoh of the New Kingdom. On the other side were the mysterious Sea Peoples, a term used to describe a group of sea-faring raiders mentioned in several Egyptian sources. These include the Peleset (Philistines), Tjekker of Crete, Shekelesh (Sicilians), Shardana / Sherden (Sardinians), and Lukka (possible ancestors of the Lycians). Thanks for watching. Anatolian stone slab tells of Trojan prince and Sea People

04:55
A3,200-year-old Anatolian stone slab that describes a warring Trojan prince has finally been deciphered more than 135 years after it was first discovered. The inscription tells of the rise of a powerful kingdom called Mira, which started a military campaign spearheaded by a prince called Muksus from Troy. The story details a time when a confederation that modern-day scholars call the Sea People laid waste to cities and civilisations across the Middle East. The kingdom of Mira, which joined this military conquest, seems to have been part of the seafaring group.According to the cryptic symbols, the kingdom had a decisive hand in the Sea Peoples' invasions, and so helped end the Bronze Age in the eastern Mediterranean. However, several scholars have raised concerns that the inscriptions might be fake.Because the slab itself was destroyed in the 19th Century, the modern deciphering is based off of copies supposedly drawn by scholars at the time. The inscription tells of how Mira, which was located in what is now western Turkey and controlled Troy itself, was ruled by a King Kupantakuruntas.Prince Muksus, a Trojan prince, led a naval expedition for Mira that conquered Ashkelon, now in modern-day Israel, and built a fortress there, the inscription claims. The text tells of King Kupantakuruntas' rise to the throne of Mira. After a Trojan king named Walmus was overthrown, Kupantakuruntas' father King Mashuittas seized control of Troy.Mashuittas quickly reinstated Walmus to the throne of the Bronze Age city in exchange for his loyalty to Mira, according to the inscription.Once his father died, Kupantakuruntas became king of Mira, though he was never the official king of Troy. The ancient leader instead describes himself as a guardian of Troy in the text, asking future rulers to 'guard Wilusa [an ancient name for Troy] (like) the great king (of) Mira (did).'The stone inscription, which was once 95 feet (29 meters) long, is written in an ancient language called Luwian that only a handful of people can read today. Some estimates list that just 20 scholars today can read the ancient Anatolian writing system, which uses complex hieroglyphs to depict stories.Independent Dutch linguist Dr Fred Woudhuizen, based near Amsterdam, has now worked with other researchers to decipher the text 139 years after it was first discovered.Live Science spoke to several scholars not affiliated with the research, and some expressed concern that the inscription is a modern-day forgery. But Dr Woudhuizen and his associates claimed it would be it 'extremely difficult, if not impossible' for someone to create such a long and complex fake because so few people can read the ancient language. Eric Cline | 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed

1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed February 25, 2015 Dr. Eric H. Cline Professor of Classics and Anthropology Chair of the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at The George Washington University, in Washington D.C. For more than three hundred years during the Late Bronze Age, from about 1500 BC to 1200 BC, the Mediterranean region played host to a complex international world in which Egyptians, Mycenaeans, Minoans, Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Cypriots, and Canaanites all interacted, creating a cosmopolitan and globalized world-system such as has only rarely been seen before the current day. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. When the end came, as it did after centuries of cultural and technological evolution, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms, that had taken centuries to evolve, collapsed rapidly. With their end came the world’s first recorded Dark Ages. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today. Blame for the end of the Late Bronze Age is usually laid squarely at the feet of the so-called Sea Peoples, known to us from the records of the Egyptian pharaohs Merneptah and Ramses III. However, as was the case with the fall of the Roman Empire, the end of the Bronze Age empires in this region was not the result of a single invasion, but of multiple causes. The Sea Peoples may well have been responsible for some of the destruction that occurred at the end of the Late Bronze Age, but it is much more likely that a concatenation of events, both human and natural — including earthquake storms, droughts, rebellions, and systems collapse — coalesced to create a “perfect storm” that brought the age to an end.
