“The Place Where We Belong“ from the episode “Uprooted“ of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (S09E03).

Season 9 chugs along, and wastes no time dealing with the apparent fall of the Tree of Harmony, and what that means for the Young Six, who formed a connection with it last season. The episode chronicles their attempts, and disagreements with, how to honor and remember the tree. And boy, the implications continue with the events at the end of the episode.
Music-wise, the season starts almost right away here with our first song from Daniel Ingram! The whole episode had a very “Castle Sweet Castle” vibe to it, and the song “The Place Where We Belong” certainly shares in that vibe. The Young Six all finally get a song of their own, with wonderful harmonies and backing vocals throughout, backed by instrumentation that seems to pull from “Make This Castle a Home,” fittingly. It’s a great start to what will hopefully be many more songs this final season!
Score-wise, William Anderson doesn’t disappoint, with wonderful BGM throughout. Notable is our first montage of the season, with a very long piece of new score accompanying. We also hear an extremely-well fitting reuse of the cue from when Twilight’s Castle was formed at the end of the episode as well.
Let’s dive in!
--Track Specific Comments--
“Uprooted” certainly felt like the second-generation of the season 5 episode “Castle Sweet Castle,” both in story and events. The first song of the season, “The Place Where We Belong,” certainly also seems to be following that lead.
The first song for the Young Six as a group, it follows a similar structure as “Make This Castle a Home,” with the melody handing off between the group, and coming together as a chorus throughout. While still having differences, the instrumentation and overall style of the song also shares a similar vibe to that of the season 5 song. It’s very fitting given all of the other similarities between the episodes, yet still remains new and original enough to be enjoyable on its own.
The instrumentation combines a full orchestra together, with highlights of mandolin and a wonderful horn part throughout. The vocals, and especially harmonies and backing vocals, are wonderful throughout. It’s always one of the best parts of any group song from the series, and “The Place Where We Belong” is no exception. Of particular note is the bridge about halfway through. It brings the entire group together in one chorus with wonderful harmonies, and mixes in some amazingly beautiful counter-melody solos throughout. You need to listen to this part in the backing vocals version of the track, as it’s really enjoyable! It reminds me a lot of the song “Hope Shines Eternal” from the Equestria Girls movie “Legend of Everfree,” which also had some amazing harmonies and counter-melody solos.
Overall, a strong start to hopefully a final season full of great songs!
