Pro Tour Magic Origins is over, so now it's time to check out the best decks of the tournament!
The best Magic: the Gathering players in the world gathered to showcase the some of the most insane decks we've seen in the standard format in a long time! I don't have space in this description to write out all of the decklists, but I will go through all of the decks briefly here.
8. U/R Turbo Tutelage
Andrew Cuneo went 6-2 with this funky deck, and was the only one playing it over the weekend. The deck is exciting, and can mill the opponent out surprisingly fast, with 18 cards capable of drawing you more cards. Crazy tricks with Alhammaret's archive (Insight, discard a land, draw 4, mill at least 8) make the deck volatile and give it a faster clock. Not the most powerful deck of the tournament, but one of the coolest, for sure.
7. G/B Bellower Pact
Easily one of the most buzzed about decks of the weekend, this deck plays Demonic Pact, then uses Woodland Bellower to tutor up a free Invasive Species that bounces the Pact back to your hand. Awesome! There were more than a few Demonic Pact builds at PTOrigins, but this was by far the most talked about.
6. Abzan Rally
Finally, Rally gets some respect! A lot of players thought this would be a very important deck in this tournament, and they weren't wrong, although the deck didn't have quite the power level we may have thought. It is really cool, though, and it can get crazy value off of Grim Haruspex and Nantuko Husk. It often wins off of Nantuko Husk alongside a Mogis's Marauder, often after a Rally. The deck is reminiscent of the Aristocrats deck that was popular in standard a couple of years back, so it's automatically killer.
5. Sultai Control
"The best control deck in the format" as it's been called, Sultai utilizes the interaction between Satyr Wayfinder and Jace to flip him early, to great effect, His +1 ability is better than anyone thought, and he's perfect for recasting removal and counters, leading to a versatile, toolbox-style strategy.
4. Abzan Midrange
Abzan keeps chugging along, and with the addition of Languish Nissa, it's stronger than ever, if not a little bloated with options. The deck will be around as long as Siege Rhino is standard legal, and it's a former pro tour winning deck, so it's no surprise that Abzan had such a good showing over the weekend.
3. G/R Devotion
Many players looked at GR Devo as the deck to beat for the pro tour. Many, many players fielded this deck, and its dominance will definitely continue until rotation in fall. The deck only gained Nissa from Origins, but it needed her very much, as she's another 2nd-turn option after Elvish Mystic, helps you get your land drops, and becomes a big creature/card advantage engine later on.
2. UR Ensoul
The darling of the pro tour, Ensoul has a lot of funky and hard-to-deal-with options at its disposal. 2nd-turn Ensoul on Darksteel Citadel or Ornithopter is the best turn-2 play in the format, Shrapnel Blast can end a game in a hurry, Whirler Rogue (and in many builds, Thopter Engineer) is even better than anyone ever thought, and Thopter Spy Network is disgusting in in grindy games. Hangarback Walker is also one of the most important cards of the weekend, as its versatility is quickly becoming legendary.
1. Red Aggro
Red Aggro has won its second pro tour in a row! This one is a far cry from the token-centric goblins deck many people expected! Abbot of Keral Keep is a seriously great creature on turn 3, and most of the other spells in the deck only cost one mana, effectively letting it go underneath GR Devotion and most of the control decks in the field. Lightning Berserker is also very important, allowing us to recover from/dodge mass removal like Languish, which was one of the most heavily played cards of the tournament.
Congratulations to Joel Larsson, Pro Tour Magic Origins Champion! Worlds 2015 is in just a few short weeks, so we'll see soon how the pros respond to this exciting new metagame!
