Designer, talent scout, entrepreneur and communicator. A key figure in the history of fashion, Fiorucci has managed to create a universe in which art and fashion intertwine. His creations have had a phenomenon success and became popular cult items for several generations. BIOGRAPHY Elio Fiorucci was born in Milan in 1935, and at the age of 17 he began following his father's profession, working in the family's slipper shop in the city center. Fiorucci first opened his own shop in 1967, featuring all the newest arrivals from Carnaby Street and the most popular items from London and the United States. After just three years, the Fiorucci name became a brand with its own industrial production, distributed throughout Europe, South America and Japan. The Milanese flagship store became a meeting point for young people seeking out the unconventional and the "Fiorucci style" was born as a look and lifestyle concept. As his brand's symbol, Fiorucci chose the two now-famous angels, a Victorian image re-interpreted by the architect Italo Lupi. After opening a store in London, in 1976 the New York Fiorucci store, designed by Ettore Sottsass, Andrea Branzi and Franco Marabelli, opened on 59th Street and immediately became a cult destination frequented by New York's most famous intellectuals. Andy Warhol chose the shop window for the launch of his revolutionary "Interview" magazine. Fiorucci also organized the Grand Opening of the legendary disco Studio 54 in 1977, an event attended by members of the international jet set like Bianca Jagger, Andy Warhol, and Grace Jones. 1981 saw the launch of the T-shirt and sweatshirt collection illustrated with Disney images, an enormous success that brought Fiorucci to the forefront of multi-national corporations, and made Micky Mouse a coveted icon even for adults. When Du Pont launched Lycra the following year, Fiorucci mixed the material with denim and the first stretch jeans were born: feminine, form-fitting, and seductive. During the '90s, the Fiorucci brand was bought by the Japanese company Edwin International, the leading Made in Japan denim brand, and the Milanese flagship store transformed its retail formula, becoming a "showcase" for young, innovative brands. The T-Art project was launched, a collection of T-shirts inspired by sweet, fairy-tale images, and the product became an immediate bestseller. In 2003 the Fiorucci store ceded to the Swedish group H&M; Elio Fiorucci created a new project, "Love Therapy", offering a new, whimsical range of clothing, jeans, T-shirts, and accessories, represented by an entertaining logo of two elves. It was a rendez-vous with Milan and its fashion-addicted inhabitants. At the heart of the city, on Piazza Duomo, where a massive runway-cum-stage was installed last Friday. As far as runways are concerned models tend to attract the most attention, but this time they had to compete with an army of fearless, clothesless dancers and up-and-coming Brit band The Horrors. A truly unique entertaining show. ABOUT ENNIO CAPASA Ennio Capasa was born in Lecce, Southern Italy. After having studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, he moved to Tokyo where he became a collaborator to Yohji Yamamoto for two years. On his return to Italy, in 1986, he founded CoSTUME NATIONAL with his brother Carlo and, later that year, presented the first womenswear collection. Designer and Creative Director of Costume National, Costume National Homme and C'N'C Costume National, Ennio Capasa is known to have created an original and iconographic style that the international press defines as essential edgy-chic. Also recognized as a costume designer and passionate about architecture, his work includes "Lo Specchio di Frida", a play based on Frida Kahlo's life (1998) and "The rules of attraction", a mise en espace of Bret Easton Ellis's novel (2002). From Gothic Lolitas to Yoyogi Rockabillies, the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku is a wellspring of some of the world's most unique and extreme fashion trends. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. Hybrid creatures that fall somewhere between the feminine and the alien, the realistic and the fantastic, the dolls were a first step in challenging the standard fashion show stereotypes while proposing a new way of representing rock 'n roll spirit behind the Spring/Summer 2010 Collections, and were complemented by a photographic installation by the artist Katsuhide Morimoto. Undercover's mission has always been to emphasize the driving "concept" behind every collection, an exercise in communication that goes beyond any single garment to reveal the greater vision that lies beneath.
