Sea Turtle Entangled in Ghost Net Rescued

04:32
This video shows the detrimental effects of so-called ghost nets on marine animals. ***Warning: GRAPHIC CONTENT*** Video Credit and Copyright: Christine Figgener *** This footage is managed exclusively by Viralvideouk.com. If you wish to license this footage please contact [email protected] For more viral videos check here https://www.youtube.com/user/viralvideouk1 ** ----- Almost to the day exactly one year ago my research team found a plastic drinking straw embedded in a male olive ridley sea turtle's nostril (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wH878t78bw). We removed it and hopefully eased his suffering and improved his quality of life. This past 9th of August 2016, my research team once again encountered a sea turtle in distress. We found an exhausted olive ridley female swimming close to our research boat and she was dragging a huge bulk of discarded fishing net behind her. Parts of it were wrapped around her throat and had already started to cut into her flesh. We took her onboard our boat, cut-off the net, and disinfected her cuts with iodine. Due to the knowledge of the scarcity of sea turtle rehab facilities and lack of expert care for injured sea turtles in Costa Rica, we released the female back into the water since she seemed otherwise healthy and strong. As biologists, we don't actively seek out injured wildlife, but our research happens to position us at the front-lines of reality looking at the detrimental effects of human impact on wildlife. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our research is approved by the US IACUC and is conducted under research permits issued by the Costa Rican government, MINAE/SINAC and CONAGEBio. If you like what my research team and I are doing, please consider donating to our GoFundMe campaign to finance our next field season. https://www.gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj If you would like to find out more about our work in Costa Rica and the members of our field team, Brie Myre, Kim Lato, and Marcus Saikaley, check out our field blog http://plotkinlabtamu.wixsite.com/plotkinlab/blog At this point, I would like to thank again everyone that donated to my GoFundMe Campaign during the past year! Without you, this field season 2016 wouldn't have been possible and we wouldn't have been to the right time at the right place to help. Thank you! (M.S.) ----------------------------------------------------- GHOST NETS "Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been left or lost in the ocean by fishermen. These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. They can entangle fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, dugongs, crocodiles, seabirds, crabs, and other creatures, including the occasional human diver. Acting as designed, the nets restrict movement, causing starvation, laceration and infection, and suffocation in those that need to return to the surface to breathe. SeaTurtleOP.org Sea Turtle Hatchling Rescue Count Update: 2014 - 30,000+ 2013 - 30,000+ 2012 - 20,000+ 2011 - 14,000 2010 - 8,700 A season recap video to thank all of the sea turtle hatchling rescue volunteers who give their hearts each summer to document and rescue disoriented sea turtle hatchlings in Broward County Florida caused by illegal lighting. Since STOP was founded in 2007 we have rescued over 100,000 hatchlings! over 1 in every 3 hatchlings goes to lights instead of the sea. That is 40% of every hatchling we witness. Many more were missed. The instinct to go towards light is so strong that the hatchlings pour onto city streets to their death, when the ocean is only a few feet from the nest where they hatched. You can help by sending emails to the cities of Hillsboro, Deerfield, Pompano, Ft. Lauderdale and Hollywood to tell them to enforce current local lighting laws, Florida State Statue 379 and the Federal Endangered Species Act. This is your wakeup call to help! Sea Turtle Oversight Protection ~ Thank You, Hatchling Rescue Volunteers 2011

04:39
Fort Lauderdale, FL. From reporter Paula C. Caro Bravo and Lady Blue Productions, to Ann. Merry Christmas! A special request from our friends from STOP (Sea Turtle Oversight Protection) and a good bye present for Justin and Mark, active and beloved members of the Hatchling Rescue Volunteer team. Thank you all for your efforts in 2011 to document a record breaking and astonishing 15,000 disoriented sea turtle hatchlings in Broward County Florida caused by illegal lighting and over 25,000 since founded in 2007. Congratulations! A TURTLE'S MIRACLE It takes decades for sea turtles to reach sexual maturity. After mating at sea, adult female sea turtles return to land to nest at night. Incubation takes about two months. The eggs in one nest hatch together over a very short period of time. When ready, hatchlings tear their shells apart with their snout and dig through the sand. Again, this usually takes place at night. Once they reach the surface, they instinctively head towards the sea. If, as happens on rare occasions, hatching takes place during daylight, only a very small proportion of each hatch (usually 0.01%) succeed, because local opportunist predators, such as the common seagull, gorge on the new sea turtles. Thus there is an obvious evolutionary drive to hatch at night, when survival rates on the beach are much higher. The problem with this is that the in Broward County, due to the artificial horizon created by city lights, 1 in every 3 hatchling gets disorientated and heads towards the wrong way, dying while seeking freedom at sea. Considering that 1 in 100 baby sea turtle survives to adult and that 1 in every 3 hatchlings goes to the lights instead of the sea, it is not a surprise to understand that all species of sea turtles are listed as threatened or endangered species. The leatherback, Kemp's Ridley, and hawksbill sea turtles are critically endangered. The Olive Ridley and green sea turtles are endangered, and the loggerhead is threatened. The flatback's conservation status is unclear due to lack of data. One of the most significant threats now comes from bycatch due to imprecise fishing methods. Long-lining has been identified as a major cause of accidental sea turtle death. There is also black-market demand for tortoiseshell for both decoration and supposed health benefits. Sea turtles must surface to breathe. Caught in a fisherman's net, they are unable to surface and thus drown. In early 2007, almost a thousand sea turtles were killed inadvertently in the Bay of Bengal over the course of a few months after netting. However, some relatively inexpensive changes to fishing techniques, such as slightly larger hooks and traps from which sea turtles can escape, can dramatically cut the mortality rate. Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) have reduced sea turtle bycatch in shrimp nets by 97 percent. Another danger comes from marine debris, especially from abandoned fishing nets in which they can become entangled. Beach development is another area which threatens sea turtles. Since many sea turtles return to the same beach each time to nest, development can disrupt the cycle. There has been a movement to protect these areas, in some cases by special police. In some areas, such as the east coast of Florida, conservationists dig up sea turtle eggs and relocate them to fenced nurseries to protect them from beach traffic. Since hatchlings find their way to the ocean by crawling towards the brightest horizon, they can become disoriented on developed stretches of coastline. Lighting restrictions can prevent lights from shining on the beach and confusing hatchlings. Sea turtle-safe lighting uses red or amber LED light, invisible to sea turtles, in place of white light.

Cold pressed is on the rougher side and hot pressed is the smoothest. For example with hot pressed the paint won't sink in as much and will dry faster, vs cold pressed is the most traditional watercolor paper for artists, the paint will sit for a while until it settles and you can do dry brushing. It also dries longer because of all that. They are both fun, I just have been painting mostly on hot pressed because of my style. Hot pressed is good when you can paint faster and when you use a lot of paint. To determine which paper is best for you I think it's a good idea to try out all three kinds, hot pressed, cold pressed and the third kind - rough watercolor paper, this one is super bumpy! ▶︎How long does it take me to finish a painting? Anytime between 40min - 3hrs. It all depends on what I am painting. ▶︎Do I use watercolor in pan or out of tube? I mostly use watercolors out of tubes. I think it helps me in painting with layers. I feel like it's so much easier to create that vibrancy when I can use more paint. ▶︎What are the basic colors, brushes papers I recommend for a beginner? Go to www.mariamorjane.com/my-art-supplies ▶︎What is art masking fluid? It's a fluid (also known as liquid frisket ) that preserves white areas, white areas of the paper where you want to stay white. It's made of some sort of latex. Once you place it on your watercolor paper, on the area you want to stay white, wait until it completely dries before starting to paint. At the end, once your paper is dry, you can peel it off easily with your fingers or using an eraser. ★★★ Music Created by: “Prelude No.6”, “Prelude No.8”, “Prelude No.11”, “Prelude No.13”, “Prelude No.7”, “Prelude No.16”, “Prelude No.17”, “Prelude No.20”, “Prelude No.21”, “There’s probably no time” by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/preludes/ Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/ “Almost in F Tranquility” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

SCUBA DIVING WITH LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLE IN GREECE

04:00
This is our little recap from our diving experience while doing the PADI certificate for Open Water Diver at Hippocampos Bali Dive Center in Crete, Greece. If you are going to Crete in Greece, then Bali is a really nice little village to visit and stay at. It has 4 beaches which are all reachable in walking distance. The restaurants are all nice and have good service and quality, the prices are fair and not as pricey as for example Santorini and the sea water is clear. We had a really awesome experience doing our OWD at Hippocampos! The staff, Corrine, Angelos and Alexandros were all really nice and they gave us the feeling to be part of this whole diver's family from the beginning already. The focus of the sessions was learning and experiencing something new and diving was only in small groups - not like a machinery! There were also no time limits so we were under water as long we still had air in our tanks. Also, when we offered to pay the whole amount at once in advance they declined and wanted one part in advance and one part at the end only. Our instructor Aurelien was truly the BEST! He had a lot of patience, encouraged us when we felt unsure with all the learning and he truly transferred his passion to us! He made the whole learning and practising the challenging under water skills very easy. We can't wait to dive AGAIN and hopefully with Aurelien again very soon! We will never forget this experience so once again - a BIG THANK YOU TO HIPPOCAMPOS BALI DIVE CENTER AND AURELIEN! http://www.hippocampos.com/ SUBSCRIBE FOR WEEKLY VIDEOS! Thank you for watching. Video of Wow's release Thank you Mary Pericolosi | Sea Turtle

Video of Wow's release Thank you Mary Pericolosi Source - Sea Turtle Preservation Society Sea turtles have been living on this planet named Earth for more than 100 million years and they have travelled throughout the oceans of the world. They are one of the oldest species living on the earth. Their body structure is so much well designed that they have even survived the extinction which the dinosaurs failed to survive. But now human beings have become the greatest threat for the survival of this mighty creature. We have destroyed the harmony of nature and environment in such a way that sea turtles who have survived great extinctions are now on the brink of getting extinct. We can learn about the present condition of the earth's climate and environment by observing the present condition of the sea turtles. Sea turtles are of great economic value. They are the assets of those countries who have them in their territory. Sea beaches are popular tourists spot. Every year lots of people travel throughout the beaches of the world. And the beauty of the sea beaches is its living beings. Without corals, fishes, turtles and other estuarine animals, sea beaches lose its beauty. And to keep the ecosystem of the sea working in a proper way, all living beings should be conserved. Green sea turtles are usually herbivorous in nature. They eat sea weds and keep them short which helps to maintain the quality of the sea bed. Sea grass also needed to be cut short like lawn grass for its better growth. Sea beds provide the ground for breeding for many valuable sea animals like crustaceans, fish, shellfishes etc. If turtles get extinct, health of the sea bed will be deteriorated and sea grass will decline. As a result, animals living on grass will be lost and this will affect other big animals who live on small herbivorous animals. Eventually whole ecosystem will collapse resulting in the destruction of the living beings of the sea which is the source of beauty of the sea beaches. So tourists would not come to travel sea beaches and the countries whose economies depend on tourism will suffer in the long run. Sea beaches and dune system can not hold nutrition. So vegetation does not grow well in dunes and in beaches it does not grow at all. Sea turtles nest and lay eggs on beaches. Each turtle lays almost 100 eggs each season. Not every egg would hatch and not each of the hatchlings would be able to come out of the eggs. All these unhatched eggs and hatchlings who do not become successful in coming out of the nest and make the way to the sea are the source of nutrition in the beaches and dunes. The more the nutrition the more vegetation grows in dunes. And as more vegetation grows, ecosystem of the beaches and dunes works properly. The vegetation also grabs the sands firmly in the beaches and prevents from being eroded. This saves the beauty of the sea beach. As the number of sea turtles is decreasing day by day, nutrition sources of dunes and beaches are also decreasing as a consequence. This will lead to the failure of the whole ecosystem and as a result the beach will lose its appeal to the tourists which will affect the economy of these countries severely. Sea turtles have historical importance too. They were the symbol of aristocracy and delicacy in the ancient time. In China and Japan tortoise shell were used as a decorative ornament. They used to make it from carapace scutes of tortoise shell. Sea turtle scutes were processed by ancient Greeks and Romans to make components like brush and combs. Aristocrat class people used these tortoise produced components. Peru's ancient inhabits Moche used to worship the sea and living beings of the sea. Sea turtles have often been highlighted on their arts. Mexican people harvest sea turtles for food and boot. In many areas of the world coastal people depend on turtles for the source of protein. Their skin is used for making shoes and leather bags in many areas of the world. They also protect humans from the attack of deadly box jellyfish by eating them. We can see that the world is becoming a hostile place for sea turtles. It is a clear warning to us that it might become harder for us to survive too. If we learn from the mistakes which we have made and pledge to make things right to save sea turtles from getting extinct, we will be saving ourselves too. Green sea turtle rescue - Fishing hook removal

02:53
Sea turtle surgeons remove a fish hook stuck deep inside the throat of an endangered green turtle. Every year an estimate of 100 sea turtles of varying species are treated this way by Amihan sa Dahican. Most of these beautiful creatures got caught by accident by local fishermen. By paying the turtles worth in coffee and sugar (about 10 USD per animal) the Amihan boys and girls get their environmental hands on these animals. They treat them as needed and once the animals are better, they release them back on the beautiful sandy beaches of Dahican. Amihan is also involved in regular beach clean-ups and they monitor the local turtle nests and relocate the eggs to safe area's of the beach if necessary until they hatch. the hatchlings are then guarded while the baby turtles find their way to the waves. The waves at Dahican beach are also perfect for surfing, so apart from their environmental activities Amihan are also a group of dedicated and very skilled surfers and skimboarders. More about Amihan sa Dahican on their website: http://amihansadahican.com/ Special thank you to the virtual mother of the sea turtle - Sabrina Mannan - who came up with the beautiful name ' Emily ' for this poor nameless female. Watercolor Underwater Sea Turtle - Sponge technique - Painting Demonstration

I promised I would paint another Sea Turtle :) For those who would like to see my first one here's the link to the Full Real Time version Part I: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBELVHqaoXo&t=12s Part II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmtrnqsng_s and short version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rqxK6n0Mvc I do paint in watercolor with layers. I start with layers where watercolors are diluted with a lot of water. That's when I also choose on what colors I will be using. It's almost like a sketch before I really start working on details. The Designer's Gouache - Permanent White - That's the only Designers Gouache I use. I basically replaced my watercolor whites with this Permanent White. Regular watercolor whites are too transparent to me and Designers Gouache - Permanent White is basically an opaque watercolor. All the annotations on colors and brushes are in the video. Paper: Hot Press, 100% Cotton, 140lb Please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE! Thank you so much for all your nice comments and support I've been getting :) Thank you for your patience! Nesting Sea Turtle Entangled in Fishing-Line

03:38
This video shows the detrimental effects of so-called ghost nets on marine animals. ***Warning: GRAPHIC CONTENT*** Video Credit and Copyright: Christine Figgener -------------------- Only a few weeks after a female was found by our research team entangled in fishing-line (https://www.youtube.com/edit?video_id=lVPSTkYihCY), we found another female during the synchronized mass-nesting in Ostional this August, also badly entangled in discarded fishing-line (also called ghost net) with her front flipper. The female was found while nesting and had dragged a bulk of fishing net up the beach with her, including a 1kg lead weight. Parts of the net were wrapped around her right front flipper and had started to cut into the flesh. Luckily circulation didn't seem to have been cut off and she was able to move her flipper normally, so we cut off the line and disinfected the cut with iodine. Given our knowledge of the scarcity of sea turtle rehab facilities and lack of expert care for injured sea turtles in Costa Rica, the decision we are usually facing is either leaving the animal as is or trying to help as much as we can by removing obstructing objects. As biologists, we don't actively seek out injured wildlife, but our research happens to position us at the front-lines of reality looking at the detrimental effects of human impact on wildlife. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ At this point, I would like to thank again everyone that donated to my GoFundMe Campaign (https://www.gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj)! Without you, this field season wouldn't have been possible and we wouldn't have been to the right time at the right place to help again. Thank you! Why Has 200 Sea Turtles Washed Ashore At America's Cape Cod?

03:28
Why has 200 sea turtles washed ashore at America's Cape Cod? We take a look at why over 200 sea turtle have washed ashore in America's Cape Cod. Sea turtles are incredible creatures. They can be found in almost every ocean basin around the world. These elegant creatures migrate long distances to feed and lay eggs. Turtles will spend their whole lives at sea with only the females coming to beaches to lay eggs. What some people may not know is that turtles have been swimming in our oceans for over 100 million years, even out surviving the dinosaurs as they became extinct around 65 million years ago. Unfortunately humans are a threat to these creatures. Some turtles such as the leatherbacks are capable of withstanding the coldest water temperatures, they have even been found in Alaska. However recently it was announced that sea turtles have been effected by the cold weather. Thank you for watching! Thank you to CO.AG for the background music!

Turtle Hatch #27 @ 37th ave Oak Island

14:06
This turtle hatching started at about 7:20pm on August 12th. The turtles start to pop out at 8 minutes into the video for those that don't care to watch the sand move. Sorry there is lot of screaming and popping in the audio. Please refrain from putting negative comments on this post, otherwise I'll have to remove that access. It's purely here to share and allow people to see something amazing. It was a cloudy day in the high 80s with showers throughout the day. As you will see in the video, the rain found us but walking away from such an amazing experience is impossible. Thank you Lori for letting us know to come. Lori and Jim are proud parents now of 87 babies and I'm hoping more to come. There are 2 other nest that are due, so who knows....

Rating the video and leaving a comment is always appreciated! - Biggs87x ------------------------------------- What is Minecraft? Minecraft is an online virtual playground and workshop, where kids of all ages can safely interact, create, have fun, and learn. It’s unique in that practically everything on Minecraft is designed and constructed by members of the community. Minecraft is designed for 8 to 18 year old, but it is open to people of all ages. Each player starts by choosing an avatar and giving it an identity. They can then explore Minecraft — interacting with others by chatting, playing games, or collaborating on creative projects. Each player is also given their own piece of the undeveloped real estate along with a virtual toolbox with which to design and build anything — be it a navigable skyscraper, a working helicopter, a giant pinball machine, a multiplayer “Capture the Flag” game or some other, yet to be dreamed-up creation. There is no cost for this first plot of virtual land. By participating and by building cool stuff, Minecraft members can earn speciality badges as well as Minecraft dollars (“Minecraft”). In turn, they can shop the online catalogue to purchase avatar clothing and accessories as well as premium building materials, interactive components, and working mechanisms.
