If the interviewer has not mentioned not to use LIKE operator, we would have written the query using the LIKE operator as shown below. SELECT * FROM Students WHERE Name LIKE 'M%' We can use any one of the following 3 SQL Server functions, to achieve exactly the same thing. CHARINDEX LEFT SUBSTRING The following 3 queries retrieve all student rows whose Name starts with letter 'M'. Notice none of the queries are using the LIKE operator. New to Oracle and .NET development? This video gives you everything you need to know to get up and running quickly! We walk you through downloading and installing the needed Oracle software and then connecting in Visual Studio and creating a simple C# application. The video starts at the Oracle .NET Developer Technology Center website at http://otn.oracle.com/dotnet We then download the "ODTwithODAC" package, extract it and run the installer. Note that ODAC version 12 works with Oracle Database versions 10.2 or higher. After installing we connect in Server Explorer and learn about the connection dialog features, including the Filters tab which by default filters out additional schemas you may have privileges on. We connect to the database using the easy to use EZ connect format. Finally we create a simple C# application and connect to the database using ODP.NET Managed driver and a EZ Config connect string. Prerequisites: 1) Visual Studio 2012 or 2013 -- any edition except Express Edition. Visual Studio Community Edition is supported. 2) An Oracle Database to connect to. You will need to know the hostname, port number and service name of the database. TO_CHAR (datetime) : TO_CHAR (datetime) converts a datetime datatype to a value of VARCHAR2 datatype in the format specified by the date format. The following is a list of valid parameters when the TO_CHAR function is used to convert a date to a string. These parameters can be used in many combinations. YEAR Year, spelled out YYYY 4-digit year YYY Last 3 digits of year. YY Last 2 digits of year. Y Last 1 digit of year. IYYY 4-digit year based on the ISO standard Q Quarter of year (1, 2, 3, 4; JAN-MAR = 1). MM Month (01-12; JAN = 01). MON Abbreviated name of month. MONTH Name of month, padded with blanks to length of 9 characters. RM Roman numeral month (I-XII; JAN = I). WW Week of year (1-53) where week 1 starts on the first day of the year and continues to the seventh day of the year. The LIKE operator is used in a WHERE clause to search for a specified pattern in a column. There are two wildcards used in conjunction with the LIKE operator: % - The percent sign represents zero, one, or multiple characters _ - The underscore represents a single character Note: MS Access uses a question mark (?) instead of the underscore (_). The percent sign and the underscore can also be used in combinations! LIKE Syntax SELECT column1, column2, ... FROM table_name WHERE columnN LIKE pattern; Tip: You can also combine any number of conditions using AND or OR operators. Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

In addition with clauses that you could combine with SELECT statement, the video shows examples using LIKE, BETWEEN AND in filtering dates, setting an ALIAS name for a column, and deriving a column as a result of a computation. YEAR function is used to derive the year of date column. Use LIKE clause in filtering string pattern in a column. Use may filter rows or records with a last name that starts with SM or ends with TH or an ER pattern in between. This is use either with a percent sign (%) or underscore (_). BETWEEN AND clause is not limited in amount ranges. You may use this powerful clause when limiting specific date range. On most occasions, you may opt to use a different column name or an ALIAS when displaying the column. Use AS operator in column name together with its new name. Experienced SQL users usually drop the AS and specify immediately the alias name. Alias name is enclosed with quotation marks when used. Working with dates may be simplified if you use specific functions. The given example uses the YEAR () function that derives the year of specific date. YEAR () function is not limited with WHERE condition but works perfectly when used in performing computation with other dates. The given example shows the 10% increase on salary as you compute it. Combine this with an alias name in order to present your data in a clear manner. Most of thethese functions and clauses perfectly work with MySQL, Oracle, Informix, MS SQL Server other than DB2. I'll be walking through each and every kinds of build in function which are available in SQL Server in my next videos. ******************************************************************************************** ASCII (Transact-SQL) Returns the ASCII code value of the leftmost character of a character expression.  Syntax -- Syntax for SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Parallel Data Warehouse ASCII ( character_expression )  Arguments character_expression Is an expression of the type char or varchar.  Return Types int ******************************************************************************************** CHAR (Transact-SQL) Converts an int ASCII code to a character.  Syntax -- Syntax for SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Parallel Data Warehouse CHAR ( integer_expression )  Arguments integer_expression Is an integer from 0 through 255. JPA and Hibernate are a great fit to implement persist and update use cases, and simple queries. But most applications need a lot more than that. You need to be able to use the full feature set of SQL to implement your queries. That’s why JPA supports native queries. But it’s not comfortable to use. You probably don’t want to provide your query as a simple String or to handle the differences between the various database dialects yourself. Other libraries are much better suited to implement complex SQL queries. One of them is jOOQ. It provides you with a Java DSL that enables you to build SQL queries in a comfortable and type-safe way. It abstracts the technical difficulties of plain JDBC and handles the subtle differences of the various SQL dialects. In this video, I will give you a basic introduction to jOOQ so that you can start using it in your application. And in my next video, I will show you how to integrate it with Hibernate. A practical application. Starts from Excel table. Saves as CSV. Python reads in the csv file and converts it to a multi-list. Imports the pymysql module. Connects to a localhost database. Creates a table called STUDENTS and assigns the column names based on the first row's columns in the multi-list. Then deletes the first row in the list. Converts the list to String made up of the rows and replaces the square brackets with parenthesis. Inserts data into the database.
