Sea Urchin Sting Removal Maui Hawaii - Daredevil Girl

I got to experience a sea urchin sting. It was very painful. I was snorkeling on Maui, Hawaii. A popular remedy for sea urchin stings is vinegar. Vinegar is great to keep around the house for many things. Sea urchin sting and spine removal remedies: Vinegar https://amzn.to/2Mp0kpg Lemon Juice https://amzn.to/2sSBmXr Witch Hazel https://amzn.to/2Mnwhyu Neosporin https://amzn.to/2JNcYAg Hydro-cortisone Cream https://amzn.to/2Mn2y8Q Urine *no link available* Water Shoes Aqua Socks https://amzn.to/2Mp4HRc Amy Chmelecki (Team Red Bull Air Force) filmed this sea urchin spine video during the Team Icarus Evolution project. We were all across the street from our condo spending some leisure time snorkeling in the ocean. I spotted an underwater arch/cave looking reef thing about 20ft deep. I was in the water with Wyat Drewes, my fiance at the time. I said, "Hey Wyat watch this. I'm going to swing under that reef arch!" I held my breath and swam down to swim under the arch. As I approached it, I was a little apprehensive. But I had to go through with it. From up at the surface it looked harmless. Once I got closer, it was a little scary looking. It was dark under there and I started thinking about eels. I went for it anyways. As I swam through it the water shifted and that scared me. It felt like I was going to get pushed into the coral. So I panicked and kicked really hard to swim out of there fast! I kicked the top of the reef arch with my heel and ouch that hurt!! Wyat was watching me and as I swam to the surface he could tell something was wrong. The sea urchin spikes went through my flipper. Wyat held me up in the water so we could look at my heel. It was ugly. Big long spikes were sticking out of my heel. I didn't know what it was and thought it was maybe something poisonous that I could die from. Wyat helped me swim to shore. Fruitcake (Jason Peters) and Amy Chmelecki came over to help. We weren't sure if I needed to go to the emergency room so we called our good friend Jimmy Hall who was a shark diving ocean expert. We described what happened and he said, "Oh that's just a sea urchin (uni). It will hurt, but it's not poisonous." Boy oh boy was I relieved!! So Wyat and Fruitcake helped me walk to our condo across the street. Then the sea urchin spike removal surgery began. Amy filmed this video and laughed at my pain. Wyat tried to removed the spikes the best he could, but they were brittle and kept breaking off. I sucked it up, dealt with the pain and we continued our awesome Hawaii project/vacation. The sea urchin spikes left a tattoo in my heel that lasted for about 2-3 weeks. What a trip! Now I know what it's like to get the wrath of the mighty sea urchin! This happened in 2003. Jimmy Hall died May 9, 2007 (Wyat's 33rd birthday) in a base jumping incident. Wyat Drewes died August 10, 2007 in a motorcycle accident. RIP boys! I miss you! - Diana Blackburn (Daredevil Girl) #daredevilgirl Buy me a beer! https://paypal.me/daredevilgirl As Always... Thanks to YOU for watching and supporting this channel... Sea Urchin Sting Removal - 10 Advices How to Treat a Sea Urchin Sting

10:07
Sea urchins are colorful marine creatures with sharp spines all over their shells. Although the majority of sea urchins don't contain venom—most effects of sea urchin stings are from the puncture wounds caused by the animal's pointed spines—the combination of sting and venom causes wide-ranging effects. Whether you accidentally step on a sea urchin or if you handle one carelessly, you can get stung. Sea urchins are venomous, so prompt and proper care is important. In the event of a sea urchin sting, stay calm and follow protocol to avoid serious infection. Sea urchins are present worldwide. Most sea urchin injuries result when spines break off in the skin and cause local tissue reactions. Without treatment, the spines may migrate into deeper tissues, causing a granulomatous nodular lesion, or they may wedge against bone or nerve. Joint and muscle pain and dermatitis may also occur. A few sea urchins (eg, Globiferous pedicellariae) have calcareous jaws with venom organs, enabling them to inject venom, but injuries are rare. Diagnosis is usually obvious by history. A bluish discoloration at the entry site may help locate the spine. X-rays can help when the location is not obvious during examination. Student paralyzed after sea urchin sting

00:35
Callum Hall, a 20-year-old from the UK, was vacationing on the Island of Skiathos when he was stung by a sea urchin. Hall was jumping out of the back of a boat when he felt something like a "bee sting" on his toe. Hall removed three sea urchin spines from his big toe and didn't think much more about the incident. Three weeks later, the trainee PE teacher developed a rare infection on his spinal cord due to the sea urchin sting. An abscess twice the size of a tennis ball burst, nearly killing Hall, and ended up paralyzing him from the waist down. After performing life-saving surgery, Doctors told Hall he has a small chance of ever being able to walk again. Hall now has some movement in his abdomen, and can wiggle his toes. He aims to prove his doctors wrong by one day walking again.

How To: Open & Eat Sea Urchin (Uni)

A sure sign you're a foodie: you can't get enough of the mind-blowing (and totally unique) flavor of sea urchin. It's thought of as a delicacy and can be pricey, and it's no wonder because those urchins are hard to crack into. We got chef Mark Dommen of One Market in San Francisco to show us the magic method to get those tasty bites out of this spiny creature. Bet you didn't know you were eating reproductive organs when you order this.

Sea Urchins Pull Themselves Inside Out to be Reborn | Deep Look

03:23
Conceived in the open sea, tiny spaceship-shaped sea urchin larvae search the vast ocean to find a home. After this incredible odyssey, they undergo one of the most remarkable transformations in nature. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * Every summer, millions of people head to the coast to soak up the sun and play in the waves. But they aren’t alone. Just beyond the crashing surf, hundreds of millions of tiny sea urchin larvae are also floating around, preparing for one of the most dramatic transformations in the animal kingdom. Scientists along the Pacific coast are investigating how these microscopic ocean drifters, which look like tiny spaceships, find their way back home to the shoreline, where they attach themselves, grow into spiny creatures and live out a slow-moving life that often exceeds 100 years.“These sorts of studies are absolutely crucial if we want to not only maintain healthy fisheries but indeed a healthy ocean,” says Jason Hodin, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories. http://staff.washington.edu/hodin/ http://depts.washington.edu/fhl/ Sea urchins reproduce by sending clouds of eggs and sperm into the water. Millions of larvae are formed, but only a handful make it back to the shoreline to grow into adults. --- What are sea urchins? Sea urchins are spiny invertebrate animals. Adult sea urchins are globe-shaped and show five-point radial symmetry. They move using a system of tube feet. Sea urchins belong to the phylum Echinodermata along with their relatives the sea stars (starfish), sand dollars and sea slugs. --- What do sea urchins eat? Sea urchins eat algae and can reduce kelp forests to barrens if their numbers grow too high. A sea urchin’s mouth, referred to as Aristotle’s lantern, is on the underside and has five sharp teeth. The urchin uses the tube feet to move the food to its mouth. --- How do sea urchins reproduce? Male sea urchins release clouds of sperm and females release huge numbers of eggs directly into the ocean water. The gametes meet and the sperm fertilize the eggs. The fertilized eggs grow into free-swimming embryos which themselves develop into larvae called plutei. The plutei swim through the ocean as plankton until they drop to the seafloor and metamorphosize into the globe-shaped adult urchins. ---+ Read the entire article on KQED Science: https://ww2.kqed.org/science/2016/08/23/sea-urchins-pull-themselves-inside-out-to-be-reborn/ ---+ For more information: Marine Larvae Video Resource http://marinedevelopmentresource.stanford.edu/ ---+ More Great Deep Look episodes: From Drifter to Dynamo: The Story of Plankton | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUvJ5ANH86I Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3CtGoqz3ww The Fantastic Fur of Sea Otters | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxqg_um1TXI ---+ See some great videos and documentaries from PBS Digital Studios! How to open sea urchin the correct way (or not) 開海膽

05:46
Hi all, Here's the link for my other video using a different opening method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2KLJxY2Awg There are many ways to open sea urchin for the delicate uni roe. However, the correct way might not always be the best way when you are trying to open it at home & especially for your first time! Personally, I have opened 15 sea urchins at home before. I think my method is better than the correct method. It yields better results and it's not as messy as smashing the urchin with a big knife. Watch this video for the correct method or click on my older video on how to open a sea urchin MY WAY at the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2KLJxY2Awg

Why Jellyfish Float Like a Butterfly—And Sting Like a Bee | Deep Look

02:56
Jellyfish don’t have a heart, or blood, or even a brain. They’ve survived five mass extinctions. And you can find them in every ocean, from pole to pole. What’s their secret? Keeping it simple, but with a few dangerous tricks. DEEP LOOK: a new ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe and meet extraordinary new friends. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. --- Why do Jellyfish Sting? Jellyfish sting to paralyze their prey. They use special cells called nematocysts. Jellyfish don’t have a brain or a central nervous system to control these stinging cells, so each one has it’s own trip wire, called a cnidocil. When triggered, the nematocyst cells act like a combination of fishing hook and hypodermic needle. They fire a barb into the flesh of the jellyfish’s prey at 10,000 times the force of gravity – making it one of the fastest mechanisms in the animal kingdom. As the barb latches on, a thread-like filament bathed in toxin erupts from the barb and delivers the poison. The nematocyst only works if the barb can penetrate the skin, which is why some jellies are more dangerous to humans than others. The smooth-looking tentacles of a sea anemone (a close relative of jellies that also has nematocyst cells) feel like sandpaper to the touch. Their nematocysts are firing, but the barbs aren’t powerful enough to puncture your skin. --- Read the article for this video on KQED Science: https://ww2.kqed.org/science/2015/09/29/why-jellyfish-float-like-a-butterfly-and-sting-like-a-bee/ --- More great DEEP LOOK episodes: Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3CtGoqz3ww You're Not Hallucinating. Sea Urchin Facts: 18 Facts about Sea Urchins

04:16
Here are 18 facts about Sea Urchins to help gain a better understanding of these incredible creatures. They are a fascinating species far different from any other species we know, and here we delve into the wonder of these wonderful creatures. Synopsis There are around 200 species of sea urchins that are found across oceans around the world Sea urchins are found in warmer waters on ocean floors close to coral reefs They are a threatened species due to overfishing and pollution They range in size from between 1.2 to 3.9 inches in diameter. They have globe like shape which is covered in long spines and their bodies have a radial symmetry. They are protected by a shell formed of bony plates providing protection for the softer inner organs. They vary in colour depending in the species of the sea urchin. However the majority are black, brown, purple, red or green in color. They have five rows of paired feet on the underside of their body. These feet have suckers in them which means they can grip the ocean floor. Amongst the spines on their bodies are claw like structures which are known as pedicellariae that are used for protection against predators and also to collect food. There are species of sea urchin that also have spikes that are filled with venom They have a unique type of mouth called "Aristotle's lantern". The mouth has five sharp teeth which they use to drill holes in rocks They are omnivores by nature consuming both animals and plant life such as algae sea weed plankton and Other orgainc mattet The main predators of sea urchins are humans sunflower stars crabs fish birds and Sea urchins mate in the spring time and reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm cells in to the water in a process called external fertilization. the Fertilized egg will then go through a larval stage before it becomes a grown adult. Whilst the sea urchin is in its larval stage It will swim with other types of tiny creatures as part of zooplankton Sea urchins live up to 30 years. In fact the red sea urchin lives up to 200 years making it the longest living creature Sea urchins are not aggressive creatures however if they are touched most sea urchins will try to defend themselves using their spines and some species have spines that can pierce a divers suit. Some species like thr purple sea urchin, have an another defense mechanism called thepedicellarines which are tiny, jaw-like structures which clasp onto a diver's skin and inject a powerful poison. They are nestled down between re spines and are difficult to come into contact with unless the diver impales them self on it

Hungry sea otter eats prickly sea urchin

01:48
Wally, a rescued and rehabilitated sea otter, enjoys a meal of red sea urchin and Dungeness crab. Sea otters, unlike other marine mammals, lack an insulating layer of blubber. Instead, they rely on their fur and high metabolism to keep warm. They eat over a quarter of their body weight every day. Wally was rescued off the west coast of Vancouver Island (near Tofino) in October. He was severely injured after being shot. He was transported to the Vancouver Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre where part of his hind flipper was removed during surgery. Rescue staff also discovered that he was blind as a result of the attack. Despite his recent history, his hearty appetite is a good indication that he's on the road to recovery. 10 Things You Didn't Know About Sea Urchins

02:27
Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about their surprisingly somewhat-complex lives of sea urchins. "Is this a predation event that we are witnessing? We might be witnessing some deep-sea predation here." [NOAA] Ah, the life of a sea urchin. Just floating around in the ocean and... What do sea urchins do, anyway? Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about their surprisingly somewhat-complex lives. Number 10. Some hang around for a long time. The red variety can live for about 200 years, making them among the longest lasting creatures on Earth. That means it's entirely possible that there's still an urchin out there who crossed paths with Lewis & Clark. Number 9. They don't have brains. The movements of their tubular feet are controlled by a simple nerve ring. It's relatively small, and most of their interior space is filled with digestive, water-carrying, and reproductive organs. Number 8. Sea urchins have teeth which come together and form a beak of sorts called an Aristotle's lantern. "Each urchin has 5 teeth which are self-sharpening and are replaced every few months." [BBC] Number 7. Being prickly isn't their only line of defense. Sea urchins can also use their spines to burrow into small rock enclosures when extra safety measures are required. Number 6. Their spines are also light sensitive. That's how they get a sense of where they are. In fact, their ability to differentiate between varying intensities of bright and dark is so sensitive, it gives them visual abilities equal to some sea creature that have eyes. Number 5. Sea urchins reproduce in groups. The process starts with males releasing sperm into the water. Then, the females come along and throw some eggs into the mix. When the two combine, a baby sea urchin will soon enter the world. Number 4. Our planet may be saved by them. Well, by studying and mimicking them, anyway. When sea urchins create their exoskeletons they use nickel ions to trap the carbon dioxide needed for its development. Scientists are currently testing how effective nickel nanoparticles are at converting larger amounts of CO2 into carbonate. Number 3. They're highly sought-after snacks. Oceans are filled with creatures looking to feast on sea urchins. Among them are sea otters, wolf eels, octopuses, and triggerfish. Number 2. Humans like them too. Some people even eat sea urchins while they're still alive, cutting them open with a pair of scissors and slurping out their insides. Number 1. Sea urchins are excellent judges of water quality. When water starts to go bad, they're among the first creatures to react to its diminishing condition. Telltale behaviors include the collapsing of spines, slowed movement, and, sadly, death.
