Sell Value NOT Price In today's market place where so many products and services are viewed as a commodit\£the ability to add value to your product or service is an absolute necessity. There is no doubt that in the absence of value virtually any product or service can be driven down to one thing - price. Sure, if s easy to blame the economy for low sales volume and decreased revenue, but even as the economy limps along, companies still have to buy goods and services. They may buy a bit differently, they make take a little longer, they could even buy less, but they still have to buy. If your customers are not buying what you are selling, cannot see the value in your offer, you will continue to hear "I need to think about if or "your price is too high." I listen to business owners who regularly tell me that they blame their customers and potential customers for being too money focused or cost conscious. Customers are attracted to value not "the lowest price or the cheapest in town." It has nothing to do with price and everything to do with the value you are conveying. When your potential customers tell you it is about the money that is actually customer code for "show me the value." The business owners I work with saw the writing on the wall and realized it is do or die for their business. They are now acknowledging this and saying "maybe it is me/' "maybe I need to be more efficient when I sell/' "maybe I need to show value/' or "maybe I should get sales coaching." These established business owners are admitting that selling is "no longer what it used to be" and new business owners are realizing that selling is "not at all what they thought it would be." Create your own economy. If you are looking for better business results, take a look inside your business instead of blaming the outside economy. Find out what is missing, what went wrong and how you can fix it. That is the only thing you have control over and the sooner you identify and fix what is wrong, the sooner your sales and revenue will improve. Invest in yourself and your skills. Sales skills are an essential part of doing business and are critical to staying in business. If you don't have sales skills; get them, if you have skills; hone them, if you are not sure where to start, ask a coach. When you arm yourself with efficient and effective sales skills, you increase the chances for your business to thrive in this new and here to stay economy.

Why? Because I hear it all the time. “How are you?” is used as a conversation starter in about 95% of selling situations. What’s crazy is that salespeople just ask, “How are you?” like a reflex, but it’s actually killing their ability to sell. Prospects know that salespeople don’t really care how they’re doing. So this question is disingenuous, and it breeds resentment in your prospects from the get-go. “How are you?” is really just a time-filler, something to say to take up space at the beginning of an awkward conversation. Given that most salespeople start calls, meetings and even emails with this cliché sales question, you need to stop. Don’t ever ask anyone this stupid sales question again. Instead, try starting a conversation with prospects with a simpler, more distinct question like, “Did I catch you in the middle of something?” This sales question will catch your prospects off guard and you’ll be more likely to actually engage them. Stupid Sales Questions #2: “Can I pick your brain?” "Hey, George, can we set up a call so I can pick your brain on what you'd be looking to accomplish?" Wow. That is the worst. First of all, nobody wants their brain to be picked. I mean, just visualize it. On a serious note, any sales questions similar to this are a complete turn-off to prospects. Even sales questions like, “Can we set up a call so I can learn more about your challenges?” are useless, because they show absolutely zero value on the salesperson’s part. Instead, you need to show value. Engage your prospects in a conversation by email, phone, or whatever, and show some value through the quality of your sales questions and the information that you've provided, then just set the logical next step to go deeper. Brain picking is no-no. Stupid Sales Questions #3: “Would you be interested if...?” “George, would you be interested if I could show you a way to double your sales?” Of course he would. This stupid sales question is not only old-school, but it's also patronizing to your prospects. Moreover, you're already starting from the wrong place. In a selling situation, you're not trying to get prospects interested; you're trying to uncover their challenges. Interest is old-school. New-school, modern-day selling is all about asking sales question that help you identify the challenges that matter—and then solving them. Interest-based selling focuses on the product that you’re selling rather than the actual prospect, so drop it. Instead, ask strong sales questions that uncover challenges. Stupid Sales Questions #4: “Are you the decision maker?” “Hey, George, are you the decision maker?” What do you think George wants to say in response to that question? Of course, he wants to say yes—even if the answer is really no. This sales question is way too direct, and it will never get you the information you really need in a selling situation. All you'll actually accomplish by asking this stupid sales question is either getting false information or actually pissing the prospect off. Instead, learn about the prospect’s decision-making process by focusing on the process itself. It takes a lot of pressure off of the prospect. When you as the right sales questions to dig into a prospect’s decision-making process, the prospect will inevitably tell you who's involved in making the decision and, more importantly, how the company actually goes about making that decision. Stupid Sales Questions #5: “What can I tell you at this point that would make you want to buy?” “George, what can I tell you right now that would make you sign on the dotted line?” I feel like I need to take a shower are writing that question—it’s just that dirty. This sales question is so old-school, so high pressure, so transparent, that I shouldn't even have to explain what’s wrong with it. But the biggest problem here is the pressure that it's putting on the prospect. With sales questions like this, you’re going to get a ton of think-it-overs. It’s time to start asking sales questions that help your prospects to uncover challenges, show them how your offering will actually help them resolve issues, and then set clear next steps. So, there you have it. Now you know the five stupid sales questions that you should never ask. There are the five stupid sales questions that you should never ask. I want to hear from you. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. Sales psychology is a secret weapon - yet most people fail to obtain it. Here are 10 of our best psychological “triggers” that you can use in your store today to increase sales and conversions. Trigger #1: Incite Customers to Buy by Giving Them Something for Free When you give a customer a freebie like a coupon, we trigger the social norm of reciprocity. When someone does something nice to us, we feel a strong obligation to return the favour. Use personalized coupons that offer someone a unique discount. For Amazon sellers, include a coupon inside the customers packaging. Trigger #2: Create Envy with Customer Reviews Customer reviews help to create envy in your prospective customers. If we see our neighbours benefiting from something, we become envious and want to receive this benefit too. And so that’s what positive product reviews do. If you’ve got a Shopify store, include a review app like Stamped.io that asks customers to leave a review. For Amazon sellers, use Jump Send which also automatically emails your customers asking them to leave a review. Trigger #3: Use Curiosity to Drive Traffic & Engagement Curiosity should feel like an itch you NEED to scratch. The spin-to-win coupon pop-up box is again a good example of this. And for Amazon sellers, a great way to add curiosity to your marketing strategy is to be creative with the review request email titles you use e.g. “I have a favour that I’d like to ask you?” instead of just asking for a review. Trigger #4: Use Photos to Help Customers Visualize If you run an online store, don’t just include the basic photos of a product against a white backdrop. Instead, look for photos that the supplier has provided showing it in a real-life context. And if the supplier doesn’t have these, consider buying a test product and taking your own photos. The same applies to if you sell on Amazon. Trigger #5: Use Photos to Create Emotions in Customers If you run an online store, be sure to include pictures of people using the product and - more importantly - ENJOYING themselves using it too! Trigger #6: Use Price Anchoring to Push Prices Higher Price anchoring is when you place two products with different prices side-by-side, and it’s most effective when there are at least 3 pricing tiers. Most people pick the middle-price product. It looks cheap compared to the expensive option, but people will assume it’s higher quality than the cheap option. It’s the comfortable compromise. Trigger #7: Include Product Pictures with Human Faces Similar to trigger #6, this trigger uses humans - particularly the face - as a way of increasing sales conversions. Consider purchasing a test product and taking your own photo with the item. Trigger #8: Pain Is More Motivating Than Pleasure Pain is a stronger motivator than pleasure. In your product descriptions, emphasize how your product can remove a pain point that a prospective customer is experiencing (and wants to get rid of). Trigger #9: Create a Common Enemy Essentially, this is creating an “Us vs. Them” attitude against a competitor you have. Look at your market or niche you are selling in: Who is your common enemy? Identify who they are and position your product against them. Trigger #10: Phrase Your Prices as Low When you emphasize how low your prices are using words like “only” and “just”, conversions and sales always increase. When you’re phrasing your pricing in marketing materials, don’t be afraid to verbally minimize the price e.g. “It costs just $9.”
