Building Amazing Homes & Mobile Spaces Using Shipping Containers!
In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired! Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. (http://www.storstac.com/) showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you. Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers. Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once. Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once. They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal. While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look. They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside. Let us know what you think of shipping containers as alternative building blocks in the comments! Man Builds Stunning Off Grid Shipping Container Home on Mountain Top
Adam from HoneyBox (http://www.honeybox.ca/) built this stunning off-grid shipping container cabin on top of a mountain in British Columbia, Canada. The cabin is built with 3 x 20 foot shipping containers. The middle container is bolted to a cement block foundation using twist locks, and the two outer containers are cantilevered using lashing rods. He designed the cabin to take full advantage of the panoramic mountain view by covering almost an entire wall with windows, although he admits this is not the most energy efficient design. He's got 800 Watts of solar panels to power his 12-volt system for lights, outlets, and a water pump. He has a wood stove for heat, propane for the fridge, hot water, and cooktop, and he has a composting toilet from Sun-Mar. For water, he has a well and a rainwater catchment system, and he uses both to fill 2 large water tanks for showering and washing dishes but he doesn't yet have a filter for the rainwater and the well water is ferrous so he brings in drinking water for now. One of the main challenges of building with shipping containers is trying to avoid water leaks along the seams where the containers are joined together. Once the clamps are in place, there's a 3 inch gap between containers. Adam installed a mechanical gutter along the seams on the roof to divert water off the roof, and he has a second gutter underneath it to catch any leaks from the first gutter. So far he hasn't had any water issues. You can avoid leaks by building a roof over the containers. The cabin is insulated with spray foam insulation, which adheres to the steel walls and helps avoid condensation problems that might arise with fibreglass batts. Adam built this structure as a studio to demonstrate one of the many ways that shipping containers can be used to create unique living spaces. He doesn't live in it full-time. Earth-cooled, shipping container underground CA home for 30K
As a kid Steve Rees played in caves and learned how the earth could cool. As an adult, he buried two shipping containers and created an off-grid retirement home for himself and his wife Shirley. After a few years of camping on their 10 acre plot in Northern California, they bought two shipping containers, hired an excavator and got to work. Doing most of the work themselves, their finished home cost them $30,000 (solar included). Their 640-square-foot space cost them less than $50 per square foot. Rees explains that while this is less than conventional construction costs, the savings only begin with construction. With a solar-powered well, a bit of propane and solar tubes for most of their light, they haven’t had any city water or electric bills since 2002. Winter temperatures in their home (even during 20 degrees outside) never fall below 62 degrees (an RV catalytic heater is sufficient for heating). Even when the temperature rises to 110 outside in the summer, their home has never risen above 82 degrees. When they asked the county about permitting they were told they “didn’t have a permit for burying containers”. They have been inspected since completing their home and they have a permitted septic system and a permitted well, just no permit for a single family dwelling. Framing a 20' shipping container. Insulating & finishing.
In this video I tried to share how I framed and insulated my shipping container. I couldn't find any decent information on Youtube, so I decided to make a video of the entire process and to share. I am not a professional carpenter, neither I am an electrician. But during my life I have learned that most people are full of BS, they try to come up with rules. In reality each and every situation is different, and will require a different set of rules. This project was for myself, it doesn't have to meet any codes or requirements, I will move the container and use it in the bush, probably with a generator. For me it was important that it stays warm and looks good at the same time, and that a person in this tiny building can survive any temperatures, and survive them comfortably. PS: Part 2 is here https://youtu.be/3aMr1kmQ0SY PS2: after a few years the container still serves us very well, we had moved it few times. To all criticists - no, there is no condensation on inside walls, and there is no black mold. I think this is mostly because we live in a very dry climate. And any moisture from inside gets absorbed by the wood, and is then slowly released back, which means it just dries out.
InSoFast discusses how to insulate Shipping Containers

The summary of the pros and cons of shipping container buildings using rigid foam insulation and not spray foam. Installing the InSoFast horizontally with a welded nailer across the top of the side walls. You would not need a nailer on the floor because the drywall would catch the bottom stud of the InSoFast. If you are looking for maximum sq/ft on the interior of the container and want to keep the look of the shipping container on the exterior, this is the best product on the market for insulation. The R Value is the highest considering you are insulating a metal box. InSoFast is a better way to achieve a net zero home by starting with a monolithic continuous insulation envelop. Explore examples of shipping-container architecture on our Pinterest board to build a container home how much does it cost to build a container home build a container home cost build shipping container house. Thermal Control Layer The addition of InSoFast’s exterior rigid insulation can significantly improve the wall assembly thermal performance it provides a continuous insulation layer that diminishes the impact of thermal bridges caused by framing. Thermal bridging through framing components reduces envelope insulation performance by 15-20% in wood frame construction and by 40%-60% in metal frame construction. InSoFast’s insulation on the exterior of wall reduces potential for moisture problems. InSoFast acts as a moisture barrier, so water that gets into the wall system is deflected or drained away. When insulation is placed on the exterior of the wall structure, the dew point is moved outward reducing the potential for condensation on the warm side of the wall. Intermodal Shipping Container FEMA Temporary Disaster Housing. InSoFast’s insulation reduces potential for moisture problems (sweating). InSoFast acts as a moisture barrier, so water will not get into the wall system and is deflected away. When insulation is placed the wall structure, the dew point is moved outward reducing the potential for condensation on the steel shell side of the wall. So only a minimum of hvac is required. https://insofast.com/explore/adhesive-attachment/ Loctite PL Premium’s 3X Stronger Construction Adhesive on clean concrete surfaces. It is the adhesive we recommend. Other formulas and brands may not work as expected. The technic you are describing is called flashing. The adhesive manufacturer has other tips and suggestions: http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/pl_ca_prem/directions/Loctite-PL-Premium-Polyurethane-Construction-Adhesive.htm Preparation Use above 40°F (4°C). Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of frost, grease, dust and other contaminants. Pre-fit all materials and protect finished surfaces. If using cartridge format, cut nozzle at a 45° angle to desired bead size and puncture inner seal. Be very careful not to allow Loctite® PL® Premium to cure on a finished surface. Application Apply adhesive to one surface of the material being bonded. Press the surfaces firmly together. Materials may be repositioned within 45 minutes after applying the adhesive. If bonding two non-porous surfaces (such as foam, metal and fiberglass), add water in the form of a very light or atomized spray from a plant mister bottle to the extruded adhesive. The repositioning time will then be reduced to less than 30 minutes. Use mechanical support for 24 hours while the adhesive cures.

Stacked cargo containers in New Haven's "LEGO" apartments
Christian Salvati of Marengo Structures thinks shipping containers make great building blocks, and in time, he hopes it will become an affordable and quick method of building homes. As full-scale R&D, in 2012, he built Connecticut’s first shipping container homes: a two-story duplex built from six containers. Two years later, he stacked higher using 27 containers to build a 6-unit apartment complex he hopes to rent to students in the New Haven area (the building is wedged between Yale and University of New Haven). While containers are uniform, modular and easily sourced (Salivati buys from a depot in Newark, NJ), the building process is still slower and more expensive than it should be given the lack of codes for this type of building. Salvati thinks that by sharing information, architects and builders can help improve both zoning issues and the currently steep learning curve that prevents containers from becoming a more universal modular alternative. Shipping container family home: building blocks in Redwoods
Shipping container playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMRx8kgwkvhJ7C_htu4x5i_-rCYapdlDC Kam Kasravi and Connie Dewitt wanted a modern cabin that wouldn't disrupt the Redwoods on their property. First they considered prefabs, but quickly realized they wouldn't fit up the narrow road to their land in the Santa Cruz mountains. So they convinced their friend, architect David Fenster, to design them a home made from shipping containers. Built from recycled cargo containers hand-picked from the Port of Oakland, Six Oaks was built around the footprint of the land. The containers were building blocks that were cut and stacked to fit between Redwoods along a steep grade. While the home was assembled in 6 hours, it took nearly a year to finish the interior since so much of it was custom. The unique materials meant some unique requirements: instead of carpenters, they used welders; a commercial roofer had to be hired, etc. Acoording to Connie, it wasn't "the cheapest way to build", but It cost about $50 per square foot less than a more conventional custom home. They didn't aim to build an extreme home, but the couple feel confident their home will hold up well under extreme conditions- i.e. falling trees, forest fires. Connie jokes that if a tree does fall on the home, "it will get a little dent and we'll call the auto body shop to fix the house". Aussie couple builds off-grid mobile home with 2 containers
Paul Chambers had began building a home out of two shipping containers as a project, but when his wife got tired of suburbia and put their four-bedroom home on the market, his project became the couple’s full-time home (Paul’s ebook: www.buildshippingcontainerhouse.com) Paul and Sarah Chambers were living in rural Scotland when Paul received a job offer in Australia. They packed their belongings and moved to a large home with a pool in an Australian suburb. After only a few months, they began to tire of spending so much of their income on their home. They also felt they’d lost touch with nature and a more active lifestyle (“there weren’t even any trails for walking”, explains Sarah). So they sold their home and moved with Paul’s “project”: two shipping containers he’d been transforming into a kitchen/bathroom + bedroom/living room. They found someone willing to let them park their new home on their rural property in exchange for making improvements to the land. When the couple first moved onto the property, the home was a very simple shelter and over the following three years, they built the containers into a proper home. Their home is completely off the electric and water grids. When they first moved to the bush they used a 3kw Honda generator, but they’ve since installed 2Kw of photovoltaic panels and a bank of batteries and phased out the generator. They have enough energy to power their home with all its conventional appliances, including a standard fridge/freezer. For heating, they rely on firewood (collected from fallen trees on the property; they have “not cut down a single tree”). For air conditioning, they use fans and AC “during really hot days”. In the beginning they had to rely on water deliveries, but Paul has since installed an extensive rainwater capture setup- both on the roof and gutters beneath the home- which provides for all their water needs: 65 square metres of rain water collection in 10,000 liters of storage. The indoor bathroom includes a shower, but Paul built an outdoor, open air bathtub which they heat with solar in the summertime. They’ve also created an extensive vegetable garden inside a netted garden cage (after the animals and hot sun destroyed their first attempts). For eggs, they have two hen houses. Paul has published an ebook explaining how he built the home including a step-by-step guide: buying and moving shipping containers, a wiring diagram and schematics, installing solar panels and a breakdown of costs. Shipping containers recycled into affordable, accessible Utah home
Real estate broker Jeff White dreamed of transforming used shipping containers into affordable housing. Laughed at by the first architects he approached, he began to work on his concept using a 40-foot-long, 9-foot-6-inches-tall and 8-foot-wide container in the driveway of his Salt Lake City (Utah) home. Being "busted" by a city inspector became the needed publicity for his project and soon after the Salt Lake's mayor was behind him and helped to ease the permits and inspections process. After two years of transformation (including plans, groundwork and permits), what began as two forty-foot high cube containers is now a light and airy 672-square-foot house. It's not dirt cheap- the Sarah House (named for a San Francisco homeless woman whose makeshift home inspired White) is currently on the market for $135,000 (and only to low-income buyers)-, but that price includes a lot of hidden costs. "I spent 40 thousand dollars for the lot and then the infrastructure underneath it, getting the sewer, water lines, probably an additional 25 thousand dollars. So you can see where I'm at, the house is still coming in at 55 to 60 thousand dollars." White thinks with time and economies of scale, he can bring the costs down. Shipping Container As An Underground Shelter
Final attempt to record building of an underground shelter using a 20 ft. shipping container. For those wondering why I didn't simply pile dirt over it without pouring a concrete cap first..... These containers are mostly sheet metal. Heavy duty as it is, the roof and sides will push inwards from the weight. Eventually the metal will rust through and you'll be buried alive. My way will insure it is still there a few hundred years from now. Problem is, you'd better keep an eye on your sump pump. If it goes bad or loses power, you'll go in one day and find it the whole thing flooded. A surface alarm letting you know the water level is above where it should be isn't a bad idea. Putting the sump pump on a UPS is also a good thing.

Living Off-Grid in a Self-Built 20ft Shipping Container Mobile Home
In this video, we meet Joseph RM Dupuis and take a tour of his off-grid shipping container house/cabin in Ontario, Canada. Joseph built the 355 square foot shipping container using three 20 foot x 8 foot shipping containers that he modified so that the indoor space was completely open concept. The tiny home was designed on the premise that it could be safely closed up for weeks at a time and still be secure. Joseph says he also chose to build with shipping containers because they're readily available and reasonably affordable. The micro shipping container cabin is insulated with spray foam on the interior walls, and bats on the curtain walls that were built in the openings at the ends of the shipping containers. For heat, Joseph installed in-floor radiant heating and a wood stove. For power, he bought a 2 kilowatt solar power system. He had a propane powered water heater for hot water in the shower and the sinks. Since the cabin is designed to be disassembled and moved, Joseph didn't invest in digging a well, which made finding water a little tricky. He had a water tote that he would carry over to his neighbours house using a tractor, and this would last him for about a month/month and a half. He left a roughed in space for a composting toilet inside the cabin, but opted to use an outhouse instead. Joseph lived a minimalist lifestyle in the house for over 2 years before moving into an apartment. He enjoyed his time living off-grid and used it to spend time in nature and to reflect on his life. The Housing complex is expandable by adding containers and limited by the vertical container's height containing the elevator. Solar panels can be added to the roof tops! I removed the roof from one of the container-apartment to view the inside but you can explore the lower floors by entering from the balcony or the foyer's roof or the main front door. The washing machine can be moved in the bathroom in place of the bidet for those countries that don't use the bidet. In front of the car spaces we have storage rooms for each apartment where you can store your winter and summer equipment or motorbike.

MUST SEE... Shipping Container Homes for Sale from Canada
http://www.kottagerv.com Shipping Container Homes for Sale that is made from Canada. This is a kind of affordable green housing shelter motorhome using the Shipping Container Mobile Home Park Model RV Trailer structure in Canada. Kottage RVs park model rv trailers are made with a solid steel structure that offers incredible strength -- especially when compared to a typical park model's wood and aluminum construction. This means our units stand up to the elements -- high winds, earthquakes, fire, even falling tree branches. They also offer outstanding security. You don't often hear "RV" and "investment" used in the same sentence these days. We believe Kottage RV is going to change that by offering an investment opportunity that can span generations. The strength and durability of the product coupled with minimal maintenance costs equals superior long term value. Advantages of using Shipping Containers from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_container_architecture#Advantages: Strength and durability Shipping containers are in many ways an ideal building material. They are designed to carry heavy loads and to be stacked in high columns. They are also designed to resist harsh environments - such as on ocean-going vessels or sprayed with road salt while transported on roads. Due to their high strength, containers are useful for secure storage. Modular All shipping containers are made to standard measurements and as such they provide modular elements that can be combined into larger structures. This simplifies design, planning and transport. As they are already designed to interlock for ease of mobility during transportation, structural construction is completed by simply emplacing them. Due to the containers' modular design additional construction is as easy as stacking more containers. They can be stacked up to 12 high when empty. Transport Pre-fabricated modules can also be easily transported by ship, truck or rail, because they already conform to standard shipping sizes. Availability Used shipping containers are available across the globe. Cost Many used containers are available at a cost that is low compared to a finished structure built by other labour-intensive means such as bricks and mortar — which also require larger more expensive foundations. Construction involves very little labour and used shipping containers requiring only simple modification can be purchased from major transport companies for as little as US$1,200 each. Even when purchased brand new they seldom cost more than US$6000.
