The Product Life Cycle 101: The Growth and Decline of a Product!

04:45
Today let's talk about the product life cycle. The product life cycle dives into the 4 stages of a product or product line. By understanding in which stage your products are in you can accordingly gain the highest potential profits and apply the correct marketing and business strategy. For this example I'll be using the iPod as an example as this is a product that was quite popular in its time. The cost for creating a product are quite high and the company needs to still find out how to scale the product for a large amount of quantity. As a result the starting price of the product is very high as well. Usually if the product is still in its own niche new market. The potential buyers are usually limited to the inovators in the market or loyal fans of the brand that were already familiar with their products before. In this stage your first customers and your marketing are essential if you want to reach the next step of the product cycle. The second step of the cycle you want to be in the growth stage. In the growth stage the company is faced with a significant amount of growth as they found out how to use economies of scale. Which means by creating the product in bulk you are making the process more efficient and are able to lower the cost as a result. In this stage it's recommended to invest in marketing and promotional channels and tools. This is the companies big moment to make as much profit as possible. Before we reach the 3rd stage. Which is maturity at this point the largest group of the potential buyers are reached. At that time you start to notice that a lot bundles and value offerings are brought into the market, limited editions ect. At this point there are usually already strong alternatives and competitors on the market that offer the same value. In terms of marketing it's important to understand that is also a important moment to plan and execute your strategy to maintain and keep your target audience informed. By applying the right marketing and business strategies your product line might gain an additional resurgence the in the market. It might also lead to a second growth period in case you reach an new not yet target audience. The final stage is the decline stage, at that stage the significant target audience starts the become smaller as most people that would actually buy the product have already bought the product, bought an alternative brand or are already looking for a new solution to the problem that the product would have solved. Furthermore at this stage the company should consider completely streamlining the product line to squeeze the final profit margins and investing in the product that would replace the current product. In the case of the ipod it would be to create an iphone which surpasses the product in functionality while offering the same value.

Product Life Cycle

02:36
Just as people go through infancy, childhood, adulthood and old age, the products and brands also goes through the same. In simple terms the PLC describes the stages through which the products passes. As the product moves through the stages of the lifecycle, the 4P’S changes accordingly. Introduction Stage This is the 1st stage of PLC. During this phase, the product is newly launched in the market due to this there will be more advertising and promotional activities in order to raise awareness among the customers. The price of the product can either be high in order to recover the cost quickly or it can be low to encourage adoption from the customers. It differs from company to company on how they set the price. The revenue is mostly negative at this stage as the costs are high. Growth Stage In this stage the revenue starts to flow in and the customers are more aware about the product in the market. The advertisement and promotional cost are lower as compared to the introduction stage. Due to this the pricing strategy now tends to be competitive pricing. Some more variants of the product can be made available in the market. Maturity Stage At this stage the pace of the revenue growth slows down. There will be little amount of profit that is generated by the product. The advertising and promotion focuses on reminding the customers about our product in the market. The company focuses on new product, changes in sizes, flavor change, etc. so that the customer purchase the product. Promotion is done to differentiate the product from the competition. Decline stage At this stage the product does not give the expected returns to the company. The sales figure goes down. The company starts to offer free products at lower price in order to finish the stocks. And finally the product is withdrawn from the market. Promotional expenses will be minimal. Therefore there are 4 stages of PLC. There is no time limit of each stage and it depends upon many factors like demand of the customers, promotions, price, etc. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. Product Lifecycle - The rebranding of Lucozade

03:48
In AQA Graphics you need to know about, and be able to draw the Lifecycle graph of a product showing the 4 stages of it's life. The stages are Introduction, Growth, Maturity and Decline. The case study that AQA illustrates in their text book is that of Lucozade. As the product declined in the 70s Lucozade went through two rebrandings. I have put together a string of adverts from 1972 to the present day. At the end of each advert there are some questions to prompt discussion.

PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE - MARKETING

06:04
in this video, wi will learn about an important concept named Product Life Cycle. Product life cycle talks about the stages a particular product or a brand has to go through. The stages are introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Firstly, the introduction stage. In this stage, a new product is introduced to the market and people start to know more and more about the product. The sales of a product in the introduction stage is pretty low. The product still has the chance to grow. The market is assessed by how the consumers are behaving towards the new product and product is also improved to suit the market properly. The next stage is the growth stage. In this stage, the demand for the product starts to increase rapidly. More and more customers get to know about the product. Next is maturity stage. In this stage, there are no more scope of increase in demand. All the potential customers have been reached. The sales are highest at this stage. The last stage is the decline stage. The product demand and sales are decreasing at this point. Different types of products have different life cycles. Products that are used daily have a very long lasting life cycle. The pictures used in order to provide examples do not belong to me. Hope you learned something from this video.

Although all products don't go through the product life cycle the same, the model does provide a general framework for how businesses should adapt their marketing mix to the stage the product occupies in the product life cycle. In the third video of a four part series, we'll explore how businesses can adapt their marketing mix to accommodate products that occupy the maturity stage of the product life cycle.

product life cycle The product life cycle is an important concept in marketing. It describes the stages a product goes through from when it was first thought of until it finally is removed from the market. Not all products reach this final stage. Some continue to grow and others rise and fall. The main stages of the product life cycle are: 1. Introduction – researching, developing and then launching the product 2. Growth – when sales are increasing at their fastest rate 3. Maturity – sales are near their highest, but the rate of growth is slowing down, e.g. new competitors in market or saturation 4. Decline – final stage of the cycle, when sales begin to fall Contents – - Product Life Cycle (PLC) - Importance of PLC - How to manage product at different stages of PLC .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... What is the 'Product Life Cycle' The product life cycle describes the period of time over which an item is developed, brought to market and eventually removed from the market. The cycle is broken into four stages: introduction, growth, maturity and decline. The idea of the product life cycle is used in marketing to decide when it is appropriate to advertise, reduce prices, explore new markets or create new packaging. First, a product idea is implemented during the introduction phase, and the idea undergoes research and development. If the idea is determined to be feasible and potentially profitable, the product is produced, marketed and rolled out in the growth phase. Assuming the product becomes successful, its production will grow until the product becomes widely available and matures in the mature stage. Eventually, demand for the product declines and it becomes obsolete, resulting in the decline stage. At the beginning of a product's life, it may have a little to no competition in the marketplace, until competitors start to emulate its success. As the product becomes more successful, it faces increasing numbers of competitors and may lose market share, eventually declining. The stage of a product's life cycle impacts the way in which it is marketed to consumers. For example, a brand-new product needs to be explained to consumers, while a product that is further along in its life cycle needs to be differentiated from its competitors. A General Example of Product Life Cycle, Management and Implementation Using an established industry as an example, recorded television has products all along the stages of the product life cycle. As of 2016, 3D TVs are in the introduction phase, DVR is in the growth stage, DVDs are in the maturity phase, and video cassettes are in the decline stage. Understanding a product's life cycle and implementing effective product life cycle management is extremely important for a successful company. Zurn Industries, LLC, a leader in commercial, municipal, healthcare and industrial water solutions, identified the need to further define its product life cycle, and implemented a platform created by Advanced Solutions Product Lifecycle Management, LLC to help it do so. The platform helps Zurn Industries integrate its company-wide product data into a centralized system in such a way that it can report on product development data. Through the use of analyzed data, the company looked at its product life cycle, from the introduction phase to the decline stage, and updated its product workflow so that it operates more efficiently. The product life cycle platform implemented by Advanced Solutions Product Lifecycle Management essentially created a straight-forward approach to new product development, streamlining the four stages of the life cycle.
