Alberto Alessi: What defines Italian design?
Grandson to the founder of the now-famous Italian design factory, Alberto Alessi joined the company in 1970. In the more than four decades he has been in the business of producing designer home and kitchenware he has seen a radical shift in the industry. Reflecting on the change in an interview with Design Indaba in London, he observes that until the 1970s Italian design implied, without exception, that it was designed by an Italian and produced in the country. This shifted dramatically in the 1980s as Italian design companies increasingly collaborated with designers from across the globe, a trend that is continuing today. Noting that production is also going global, Alessi asks what defines Italian design if it is not designed or made by Italians? He regards Alessi as an industrial research laboratory that explores the possibilities of products in the field of design. The product development process takes up to two years from when the company first receives the design proposal from a designer to when the product is presented to market. In between, it goes through a rigorous development process. Aside from market research and commercial prowess, Alessi also values his intuition and believes "in giving birth to things only if I believe they are right not just because it will sell". It is this quality of balancing passion, knowledge and skills that he believes defines Italian design and will ensure the survival of the Italian design factory: "It is the skilful mediation between creativity and the market which is a matter of the head [and] maybe heart – but not necessarily of manufacturing," he says. "So Italian design factories might survive even when they are not producing designs by Italians or even when designs are not produced in Italy." Sticking to the company's roots however, Alessi made a conscious decision to stay in Italy and to keep the most important part of its production – products made through the cold forming of metals – in the country.

Top 5 Plus Latest Greatest Leather Bag Design Innovations
Five great companies making solid leather bags, and products. Bucheimer was born in 1884, as the American manufacturer of original designs in leather goods. Bucheimer’s legacy includes: the first ever chain wallet, also known as the trucker’s wallet. Beginning in the 1960's, Bucheimer was awarded the contract to produce the U.S. Post Office mail bag, the NYPD holster, and the NYPD saddle. With this legacy in mind, we carry Bucheimer forward continuing a tradition of quality and craftsmanship that has been a benchmark of this brand for over a century. Just as Bucheimer began in 1884, we are still manufacturing in the USA. We still use luxury, durable leathers to achieve a finish and patina only found in the best leather goods in the world. At Cravar, we aim to create quality, well designed, and lasting leather goods. It all started when Yoki P. Baskara went on a backpacking trip to Italy and saw an old shop selling wonderful leather goods. That sparked his interest in leather and he started designing & making leather photo albums for Hypnosis, his photography business. He kept on designing and making prototypes of what would eventually become Cravar’s collection. The Story of Harmattan Leather ... We started out as an idea and a question, discussed between design professionals: Could we produce a bag out of the best leather, with no compromises and still have a decent retail price? Harmattan offers 4 of the initial 14 designs and maintains it's much-appreciated quality standard and affordability. We use the same full grain, 5-9 Oz. ( 2-3 mm ) bovine leather, the thickest and most expensive leather available combined with perfect craftsmanship. We make sure your bag last a lifetime and that you can actually afford it. The inspiration behind the Satchel & Page leather collection came from Daniel's grandfather and his map case from WWII. The bag holds stories of courage, resiliency, and love. The leather has aged with character and the bag is still going strong…about 70 years later…Which got Daniel thinking, "Why can’t I find products like this now?" So we’re creating the highest quality leather bags possible. A bag that you will be proud to pass on to future generations. Our designs are inspired by the great generation of the 1940s : Map case, Mailbag, Briefcase, Gladstone, Pilot's Bag. We have maintained the original styling of the era, but have added functionality for today's technology. There is a belt that my father has had for the past twenty years. Over those twenty years it has aged with him. It has been scuffed, nicked and developed a dark patina as a visual testament to the work that it’s been through. That belt has always been an example to me of what it means to make something of quality. Something strong. Something reliable. Kingsman Leatherware......About a year ago, after visiting my parents and seeing my father’s belt again, I realized that it was about time that I found myself one of the same quality. Never being one to shy away from a challenge, I decided that I would make my own. After making that belt, I realized I wanted (and needed) a new bag for my laptop and a duffel I could use for whenever and wherever I travel. And with that, Kingsman Leatherware was born. Design and Social Responsibility: Sigga Heimis at TEDxReykjavík
The world of design has developed greatly in the last years and designers take more responsibility for their work. Lack of resources, pollution, employment conditions and social responsibility are among the factors that make designers think twice before putting a product on the market. Can designers use their creations and images as a medium to awaken people to consider social issues that are often invisible because they are quite simply not thought of as interesting? Sigga Heimis is an industrial designer, born in Iceland and educated in Italy. She has worked for years in the field of industrial design, mainly for the furniture industry. She was one of the core designers at the headquarters of IKEA in Sweden for 8 years and following this she took on a design manager role for Fritz Hansen in Denmark. She then founded her own studio and moved back to Iceland after living abroad for many years. Today she runs her Studio Sigga Heimis and works for international companies all over the world. She focuses on design and design management and recently she has concentrated on the development of design and social responsibility within the field. Her collaboration with Corning Museum of Glass is one of her main projects and she teaches and holds lectures worldwide in numerous Design universities and institutions in various continents. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. SPD slide show
Since 1954 this school has worked with Italian design, seen it grow and develop into what we know it as today. The artist Nino di Salvatore set up SPD in 1954. As a painter and sculpturer, he has captivated and brought together artists, designers, professionals and students from across five different continents. Bruno Munari, Gio Ponti, Max Huber, Pino Tovaglia, Isao Hosoe have all taught at SPD. Guests at the school include Achille Castiglioni, Rodolfo Bonetto, Roberto Sambonet, Donald Norman and Tomato. Today, working along side our young designers, experimenting with real projects and designs, training new talent are Piero Lissoni, Stefano Giovannoni, Denis Santachiara, Andrea Branzi. An outstanding past has been extremely rewarding with exceptional recognition of the school: Boasting the exhibition at the Biennale di Venezia in 1986, at the Carrousel du Louvre and at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris; the 'Medaglia d'Oro' at the tenth Triennale in Milan and even the 'Compasso d'Oro' awarded by the ADI -Associazione Disegno Industriale in 1994; not to mention the honour of being granted twice the SMAU prize for Industrial Design. There are always things that you can discover, rethink, transform. In Milan, the capital of design, SPD organises annual Master's courses. With over 50 years of experience in the field, these courses range from product design to interior design, from communication to multimedia. Didactics is personalised, in a human sized environment promoting easy contact with the faculty and the staff. The study programs have a strong orientation towards real projects, keeping in close contact with companies and professionals. http://www.scuoladesign.com

Quality first and foremost: We work only with the very best stone. It all starts in the quarry where we identify the optimal extraction point where the purest material is located. Whilst this means a more limited quantity, it also ensures that the stone we choose has a uniform tonality and will stand the test of time, maintaining its colour across the decades once it has been installed. Every single product passes through the hands of our team for finishing and a final quality check. We’ve been working with natural stone in this way for over 70 years across 3 generations. Craftsmanship meets innovation: In 2013 we received an award from the Italian President recognising us as the most innovative company in Italy in the natural stone sector. In fact many of our innovations are on show in the Los Angeles Science and Technology Museum. We take raw stone, transforming it into unique and exclusive products by combining proprietary technology and techniques with the expertise and human touch of our team of artisans. An indelible bond with the quarries just a stone’s throw away from our Tuscan headquarters, together with obsessive attention to detail and an innate ability to anticipate and reinterpret design trends, are the characteristics which have long distinguished us and meant that we set the global benchmark when it comes to innovation in the natural stone sector. ‘Total Look’ design: We are one of just a very few companies in the world who can deliver a Total Look environment encompassing surfaces, bathroom products and home décor pieces all in beautiful natural stone. We focus on a selective range of stones which create an elegant, versatile and consistent colour palette across products designed, manufactured, tested and certified to guarantee absolute client satisfaction. Green philosophy: Respect for the environment is integral to who we are and what we do and in fact we were the first company in the world to manufacture a product on an industrial scale using offcuts. Lithoverde®, the world’s first recycled stone material, is 99% composed of discarded stone and as such contributes LEED points, in recognition of its positive impact on the environment. Bespoke solutions & 360-degree support: Our goal is to ensure that each and every client loves their Salvatori product and so we are with you every step of the way, from offering design and engineering expertise through to providing guidance about installing, treating and caring for your stone. All our products have been developed so as to minimise any risk of installation problems whilst our Plug&Play bathroom products reduce time and costs thanks to their fast and stress-free installation system. Every product is accompanied by installation guides, video tutorials and technical sheets.

Italian Cleaning companies at ISSA Interclean 2010
Issa Interclean, the worlds leading event for the cleaning industry, took place at the Amsterdam Exhibition and Convention Centre from 26 -29 April. More than 1000 exhibitors and 20,000 visitors swarmed the exhibition halls. These numbers are a heartening indication that the market is on the rebound after two long hard years. Made in Italy stood up to its competitors presenting leaders on the world market and was able to do so thanks to its ability to invest in research and development, and the particular characteristics of new productions at companies recognized as Italian Cleaning. RCM, a company in Modena specializing in signature Ferrari red scrubber dryers and sweepers, showcased Mega and Combo. Mega is a scrubber dryer for medium to large areas that marks a new era of scrubber dryer machines at RCM. Combo is the first Italian compact and combined machine which stands out for its strength and efficiency and will soon operate on a hydrogen system VDM, a specialized professional cleaning equipment company, presented its agreement with the American company Microban for antibacterial treatment of thermoplastic components for its trolleys. Worth noting among the new productions is Tecno Shower, an innovative super impregnator that requires minimal water, and Sky Compact, a compact trolley par excellence. Ecochem presented a wide range of detergent systems, among which stands out Eco Deep, a stain remover for stones able to bring back the natural splendor of every type of floor. Lindhaus, a worldwide leading manufacturer of carpet sweepers and vacuum cleaners, presented innovations on its products that make, for example, LindWash increasingly universal as it can clean any surface. They also presented their high efficiency motors for the entire carpet sweeper line. Fibratesco, a production subsidiary of Facco, was also at the event and presented its Standard Range: a full range of high quality and long lasting pads. Nettuno, manufacturer of professional hand cleaners, hailed a huge success in terms of orders for Sendy Wipes, large non woven fabrics wipes with a slightly abrasive surface that are very resistant, made especially for even the toughest grime. But there was also positive feedback from all production units of the company from Bergamo where ergonomic principles are the guiding force in producing its applications. The Idrobase Group registered a large influx of quality visitors. A keen interest was shown for the entire range of professional pressure washers, including the brand-new Rondine, a new concept in professional pressure washers with an innovative design. Considerable orders were placed for E-Soffio, a breakthrough in air conditioning distributed by Perfect Cool and, as usual, the entire range of accessories for pressure washers proposed by Club dei Riparatori was a hit.

Alberto Alessi, Director of Design Management at Alessi
Why real innovation is a question of systematic failure management. The Italian design factory ALESSI is a representative example of how Italian design companies, like Artemide, Flos or Kartell, have been able to constantly reinventing themselves without loosing focus: exploring the imaginary of people by ignoring prescriptive marketing research in their product development. For this video interview we travelled to the Alessi headquarters in Crusinallo near Milan, where chief design manager Alberto Alessi spoke about his theory of contemporary design management, the ugliness of cars, how Philippe Stark's lemon squeezer came to life and why the egg is the most singular object ever "designed".
