Alberto Alessi: What defines Italian design?

03:42
Grandson to the founder of the now-famous Italian design factory, Alberto Alessi joined the company in 1970. In the more than four decades he has been in the business of producing designer home and kitchenware he has seen a radical shift in the industry. Reflecting on the change in an interview with Design Indaba in London, he observes that until the 1970s Italian design implied, without exception, that it was designed by an Italian and produced in the country. This shifted dramatically in the 1980s as Italian design companies increasingly collaborated with designers from across the globe, a trend that is continuing today. Noting that production is also going global, Alessi asks what defines Italian design if it is not designed or made by Italians? He regards Alessi as an industrial research laboratory that explores the possibilities of products in the field of design. The product development process takes up to two years from when the company first receives the design proposal from a designer to when the product is presented to market. In between, it goes through a rigorous development process. Aside from market research and commercial prowess, Alessi also values his intuition and believes "in giving birth to things only if I believe they are right not just because it will sell". It is this quality of balancing passion, knowledge and skills that he believes defines Italian design and will ensure the survival of the Italian design factory: "It is the skilful mediation between creativity and the market which is a matter of the head [and] maybe heart – but not necessarily of manufacturing," he says. "So Italian design factories might survive even when they are not producing designs by Italians or even when designs are not produced in Italy." Sticking to the company's roots however, Alessi made a conscious decision to stay in Italy and to keep the most important part of its production – products made through the cold forming of metals – in the country.

IDE&A is an advanced training program design resulting from the collaboration between Studio Algoritmo, ISAD (Instituto Superior de Arquitectura y Diseño de Chihuahua S.C.) and the Quasar Design University of Rome. The IDE&A program aims to provide the participants with the knowledge, tools and prerequisites needed to address the design theme, integrating technical and technological aspects, performance, environment and interaction with the territory. Besides, it introduces participants to new business management issues by providing the elements needed to understand and evaluate the operational implications of the global business phenomenon. The program is articulated to cover various factors affecting a complex and diversified industrial product, through the participation of the students in the on-going design works of Studio Algoritmo, in preparatory design courses, relationships with companies and Italian university education. Italy has played a key role in the product design scenario for years by inventing the “Made in Italy”, famous all over the word. Tanks to IDE&A, this tradition is now made available to future designers from different design studios or design experiences, in order to provide them with an adequate response to the new market needs. It will also be essential to formulate an adequate definition of the role of the Designer, involving Companies and Universities, to form new, up-to-date and competitive professional figures, experts in a sector of such great development and continuous innovation. e acquired skills will not only be limited to the Culture of the project, but will also range in other disciplines like business and more, so that the final product becomes attractive, innovative and therefore competitive on the market, for a design approach that cuold be both at the service of companies or for self-production. It will therefore be necessary to blend the project creativity with Marketing and Technology to deliver new and winning design concepts and to be able to self-establish in the market.

Top 5 Plus Latest Greatest Leather Bag Design Innovations

07:48
Five great companies making solid leather bags, and products. Bucheimer was born in 1884, as the American manufacturer of original designs in leather goods. Bucheimer’s legacy includes: the first ever chain wallet, also known as the trucker’s wallet. Beginning in the 1960's, Bucheimer was awarded the contract to produce the U.S. Post Office mail bag, the NYPD holster, and the NYPD saddle. With this legacy in mind, we carry Bucheimer forward continuing a tradition of quality and craftsmanship that has been a benchmark of this brand for over a century. Just as Bucheimer began in 1884, we are still manufacturing in the USA. We still use luxury, durable leathers to achieve a finish and patina only found in the best leather goods in the world. At Cravar, we aim to create quality, well designed, and lasting leather goods. It all started when Yoki P. Baskara went on a backpacking trip to Italy and saw an old shop selling wonderful leather goods. That sparked his interest in leather and he started designing & making leather photo albums for Hypnosis, his photography business. He kept on designing and making prototypes of what would eventually become Cravar’s collection. The Story of Harmattan Leather ... We started out as an idea and a question, discussed between design professionals: Could we produce a bag out of the best leather, with no compromises and still have a decent retail price? Harmattan offers 4 of the initial 14 designs and maintains it's much-appreciated quality standard and affordability. We use the same full grain, 5-9 Oz. ( 2-3 mm ) bovine leather, the thickest and most expensive leather available combined with perfect craftsmanship. We make sure your bag last a lifetime and that you can actually afford it. The inspiration behind the Satchel & Page leather collection came from Daniel's grandfather and his map case from WWII. The bag holds stories of courage, resiliency, and love. The leather has aged with character and the bag is still going strong…about 70 years later…Which got Daniel thinking, "Why can’t I find products like this now?" So we’re creating the highest quality leather bags possible. A bag that you will be proud to pass on to future generations. Our designs are inspired by the great generation of the 1940s : Map case, Mailbag, Briefcase, Gladstone, Pilot's Bag. We have maintained the original styling of the era, but have added functionality for today's technology. There is a belt that my father has had for the past twenty years. Over those twenty years it has aged with him. It has been scuffed, nicked and developed a dark patina as a visual testament to the work that it’s been through. That belt has always been an example to me of what it means to make something of quality. Something strong. Something reliable. Kingsman Leatherware......About a year ago, after visiting my parents and seeing my father’s belt again, I realized that it was about time that I found myself one of the same quality. Never being one to shy away from a challenge, I decided that I would make my own. After making that belt, I realized I wanted (and needed) a new bag for my laptop and a duffel I could use for whenever and wherever I travel. And with that, Kingsman Leatherware was born. 15 MOST Luxurious Fashion Brands

11:15
From Oscar de la Renta to Chanel, here are some of the most lavish and prestigious fashion brands. Subscribe to Hindered Thoughts http://goo.gl/d3U3RP 6. Chanel The high fashion wear company was introduced to the world back in 1909 by none other than Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, otherwise known as “Coco Chanel.” This is where the brand gets its inspiration for the famously recognizable logo that is two interlocking C’s. The company specializes in creating haute couture for its wealthy clients but also for fashion models like Naomi Campbell, who once modeled for them, and actresses Marilyn Monroe, Keira Knightley, and Nicole Kidman. One of their most famous products is the perfume No. 5 de Chanel, along with the Chanel Suit. Today, Chanel is valued at being $6.8 billion dollars. An interesting fact to note is that Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director behind Fendi, happens to be the creative director for Chanel as well. 5. Prada Founded back in 1913 by Mario Prada, this fashion brand actually started out by manufacturing leather bags and trunks. It would then evolve into selling everything from clothing to perfume and even a brief stint of LG Prada cell phones. Though the brand may have broadened its inventory, it still spends the majority of its focus creating some of the world’s most exclusive handbags that only the rich and famous can possibly hope to afford. Mario Prada believed that women should not be involved in business so he excluded his own family members from getting involved. In a fantastic twist of irony, his son did not care to run the business so his daughter Luisa Prada took over as his successor and is now currently being run by her daughter Miuccia. 4. House of Versace The fashion empire that is the House of Versace all started with fashion designer Gianni Versace back in 1978. He created a brand that has been synonymous with elegance and simply oozes high fashion. His glamorous gowns have gone on to make a name for himself as a respected designer. Like the case of the famous black dress held with gold safety pins that actress Elizabeth Hurley wore back in 1994 to the premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral. Sadly, Versace’s life was cut short in 1997 on the steps of his Miami mansion when he became the fifth and final victim of Andrew Cunanan. The tragic event will be the story behind American Crime Story’s season 2 titled: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. After his death, his sister Donatella became the new Artistic Director and has established a $5.5 billion company her brother would be proud of. 3. Gucci Started in 1921 by a Mr. Guccio Gucci, the company was originally dabbing in leather goods. It wasn’t until 19 years later when his son Aldo would take the company from being a one-stop shop into the fashion powerhouse that it’s now known for being. It’s Aldo that would usher in the era of the brand’s iconic “Bamboo Bag” and its “ready to wear segments.” In the 90’s, the company decided to bring American Fashion designer Tom Ford to revamp their women’s wear. He ended up helping launch the brand to where it is today. The fashion brand houses other well-known designers in its collections such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Yves Saint Laurent. If you’re in the market to do some shopping at this $12.4 billion brand, expect to spend at least $2,000. 2. Louis Vuitton This may come as a shock but the famous fashion brand has been around longer than you might have thought. Formed 163 years ago in 1854, a young man by the name of Louis Vuitton started out as an apprentice for a box-maker. Vuitton ended up becoming a well-known crafter of luxury trunks and opened up his own shop in Paris. He then ended up becoming the personal box-maker of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie de Montijo. Fast forward years later and the company is now worth $28.1 billion with a generated revenue of $10.1 billion. Today, Louis Vuitton doesn’t make just trunks but designer handbags and clothing that can be spotted on the most famous of A-listers. 1. Balenciaga The beginning of Balenciaga’s reign began back in 1919 when it was established by its founder of the same name, Cristóbal Balenciaga. As a young child, Balenciaga became an apprentice to a tailor in his hometown of Getaria, Spain and would eventually get his formal training in Madrid. He would go on to create the House of Balenciaga and skyrocketed to success thanks to his artistic genius. He was hailed as the undisputed “ King of Fashion” and was highly respected among his peers which included the likes of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Pierre Balmain. Balenciaga even helped train the likes of high-fashion designers Oscar de la Renta and Hubert Givenchy to name a few.

These are the best of the best and offer complete coverage without looking caky or heavy. My handcrafted Japanese brushes available to ship worldwide here: http://bit.ly/1OvBzAR CHECK THIS OUT!!!! http://youtu.be/UAtJkOk7PKE Personally speaking i prefer a foundation that is highly concentrated - i.e. - one that is full coverage. That way i can control the product and the intensity. I would rather sheer down a full coverage foundation than have to apply more product (thus using it up quicker). The following foundations are among my favourite liquid foundations. If you're looking for EXTREME cover (i.e. - scars, tattoos, birthmarks etc...) then illamasqua rich foundation is best of the best for that. This stops the foundation from being overly absorbed and it also allows for the most beautiful application. The beauty blender is still one of the best tools for foundation. A wedge sponge is just as good...and cheaper. Always use less product than you think you need - you can always add more. I always (almost always) set foundation with a powder and a puff. Alberto Alessi, Director of Design Management at Alessi

13:02
Why real innovation is a question of systematic failure management. The Italian design factory ALESSI is a representative example of how Italian design companies, like Artemide, Flos or Kartell, have been able to constantly reinventing themselves without loosing focus: exploring the imaginary of people by ignoring prescriptive marketing research in their product development. For this video interview we travelled to the Alessi headquarters in Crusinallo near Milan, where chief design manager Alberto Alessi spoke about his theory of contemporary design management, the ugliness of cars, how Philippe Stark's lemon squeezer came to life and why the egg is the most singular object ever "designed". Small and Emerging Companies Award Winner: Flap (Caimi Brevetti) | #DesignEuropa Awards

02:26
Designed by father-and-son duo Alberto and Francesco Meda, the Flap sound-absorbing panels are made by Caimi Brevetti, a leading producer of design furniture and accessories for the office and contract market. The Flap panels are made of polyester with variable density, and their irregular shape allows them to break up sound waves. The jury appreciated how the product blended visual and tactile elements, and seamlessly bridged interior and industrial design. Notable too was the company’s “sophisticated and intelligent use of the RCD system” through its IP management strategy. Caimi Brevetti, founded in Italy in 1949, today attributes nearly 70% of its design output to external designers. It is a true design-intensive business, which involves designers in the conception and the definition of its new products as a matter of course. The company puts a very high premium on research, innovation and experimentation, and through its 67 years of operational life, has accumulated technical and technological experience which it leverages in new product creation.

MASCHERONI | Italian luxury leather company: Contract Division

00:41
MASCHERONI was established about 40 years ago in Cabiate, a town not far from Milan. This is where MASCHERONI has its head offices, in the heart of the manufacturing district of Brianza. In the 80s, the workshop became a company and MASCHERONI became a brand that is internationally recognised for the high quality of its upholstering. The company did not rest on its laurels; it began to design and make special products and full suits of furniture for its demanding customers, people that were looking for luxury products, first in Europe and then in the rest of the world. Mascheroni now works on a permanent basis with more than eighty countries. MASCHERONI is today one of the few companies that handles and controls the entire production cycle, in so doing ensuring perfect quality at each step of the production process, from the selection of the raw materials to production, right up to custom services. The manufacturing activity is based on teamwork and on the skills and quality of the individual craftsmen. The pieces of each product are predominantly made by hand and with the use of state-of-the-art machinery. Then, though, everything is completely assembled by hand. It is by no chance that one of the company’s main goals is to ensure continuity by keeping the training level of the company’s staff high and raising it further. As such, each “senior” master craftsman is flanked by a junior craftsman so that the junior can complete his specialisation path and become a master craftsman, too. The search for excellence and constant innovation are the foundation stones that characterise Mascheroni products and are why the company is recognised worldwide.

P.E.F. Product Environmental Footprint of a jacket made with RadiciGroup yarn, Sensitive® fabrics by Eurojersey, Herno design and manufacturing. RadiciGroup, Eurojersey and Herno unveil the first and only European scientific study of sustainability on a fashion garment. The three companies represent the excellence in the textile field, both in Italy and worldwide, and through this pioneering project (which Italians often have the courage to undertake) they certified and tracked the environmental impact of a Herno man's jacket at all stages of its production process (the so-called "mount" with the raw materials, polymerization, spinning and fabrics’ production, until the “valley” process with design and manufacturing) deciding to convert the sustainability commitment into a subject of competitiveness and circular economy.

There is a mistake at 11:05 where I show an Aventador when talking about the Gallardo, apologies for that! Also another mistake at 8:42, where I incorrectly show a picture of Pinochet when talking about Hugo Banzer. Thank you guys for pointing them out! Ferruccio Lamborghini, an Italian manufacturing magnate, founded Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A. in 1963 to compete with established marques, including Ferrari. The company gained wide acclaim in 1966 for the Miura sports coupé, which established rear mid-engine, rear wheel drive as the standard layout for high-performance cars of the era. Lamborghini grew rapidly during its first decade, but sales plunged in the wake of the 1973 worldwide financial downturn and the oil crisis. The firm's ownership changed three times after 1973, including a bankruptcy in 1978. American Chrysler Corporation took control of Lamborghini in 1987 and sold it to Malaysian investment group Mycom Setdco and Indonesian group V'Power Corporation in 1994. In 1998, Mycom Setdco and V'Power sold Lamborghini to the Volkswagen Group where it was placed under the control of the group's Audi division.
