Oracle SQL Tutorial 12 - Intro to Constraints

06:13
As I believe I've mentioned in an earlier video, a constraint is basically a rule we can put in our database that prevents someone from putting the wrong data in. It protects our relationships and data integrity. Because the goal of these constraints are to protect our data integrity, you may hear them called integrity constraints. There are many integrity constraints we are going to talk about: NOT NULL UNIQUE PRIMARY KEY FOREIGN KRY CHECK There is also the DEFAULT attribute. These are all keywords we can add to our columns that will change the way the database works with our data and also prevents incorrect data. NOT NULL is a constraint you can put on a column that prevents nulls. A null is the absence of a value. When we say null, we are saying that every single row has to have a value for this column. UNIQUE is a constraint that makes every row have a unique value for this column. Now note, this does not require values to be put it, and it will allow multiple rows to be null. Next, we are going to talk about primary keys. What qualifies a column as a candidate key? First, not a single row should have a null for that column. Second, every row must be unique. The primary key constraint is essentially a combination of the NOT NULL constraint and the UNIQUE constraint. The foreign key constraint sets the requirement that any value in this column for any row must match a row in another column. Check constraints allow us to be more strict with what data is allowed in our database. NOT NULL and UNIQUE give some level of restriction, but what if we want something more specific? For example, what if we only want values between 0 and 100? That is where check constraints come in. When using check constraints, you give a boolean expression. A boolean expression is something that can be evaluated to true or false. It will only insert the row if the value you try to put into the row makes the expression evaluate to true. So if you put in a value too great or small, the expression will be false and the data is not allowed to be entered. The default constraint is a value you can give a column, and if for any reason when the row is created in the table a value is not provided, the default value will be given. So for example, we could have a bank account table where the balance defaults to 0. How do you actually implement these constraints when you are creating a table? In the next video we are going to be adding these to our users table. LNNVL FUNCTION IN ORACLE SQL

09:11
This video is the 5th video in the series of 'working with null', this video explains the working of the lnnvl function in oracle sql with simple and easy to understand example. LNNVL provides a concise way to evaluate a condition when one or both operands of the condition may be null. The function can be used only in the WHERE clause of a query. It takes as an argument a condition and returns TRUE if the condition is FALSE or UNKNOWN and FALSE if the condition is TRUE. LNNVL can be used anywhere a scalar expression can appear, even in contexts where the IS [NOT] NULL, AND, or OR conditions are not valid but would otherwise be required to account for potential nulls. Oracle Database sometimes uses the LNNVL function internally in this way to rewrite NOT IN conditions as NOT EXISTS conditions. In such cases, output from EXPLAIN PLAN shows this operation in the plan table output. The condition can evaluate any scalar values but cannot be a compound condition containing AND, OR, or BETWEEN.

COALESCE IN ORACLE SQL

06:50
This video is the 4th video in the series of 'working with null', this video explains the working of the coalesce function in oracle sql. Also the video explains the use of coalesce function in oracle sql queries by perfect simple and easy to understand examples. COALESCE returns the first non-null expr in the expression list. You must specify at least two expressions. If all occurrences of expr evaluate to null, then the function returns null. Oracle Database uses short-circuit evaluation. The database evaluates each expr value and determines whether it is NULL, rather than evaluating all of the expr values before determining whether any of them is NULL. If all occurrences of expr are numeric datatype or any non numeric datatype that can be implicitly converted to a numeric datatype, then Oracle Database determines the argument with the highest numeric precedence, implicitly converts the remaining arguments to that datatype, and returns that datatype.

How to Gather SQL Resource Consumption Metrics in Oracle

01:20:51
Presented by Karen Morton Tues 8th May 2012 Summary SQL is utilized to return data via our applications to service user requests. Whether it's a single customer lookup or a huge month end summary report, the SQL we write must gather the correct data and return it to the user. Ensuring that the SQL you write can do this in a timely and efficient manner, both now and in the future, requires that you measure and evaluate what resources your query must use. In this webinar, we'll cover several methods for how to collect data that show you precisely how your SQL consumes resources: Using AUTOTRACE Using DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR Using Report SQL Monitor Using ASH (Active Session History) and AWR (Automatic Workload Repository) data You'll learn how to utilize the data to understand the work your SQL is doing and the resources it consumes; identify currently evident performance issues as well as areas that could be problematic in the future; and modify your SQL to use less resources more efficiently while still returning the desired results. A live Q+A session with Karen Morton follows the presentation. For our complete archive, and to sign up for upcoming webinars please go to http://www.red-gate.com/oracle-webinars

SQL Server 23 - Intro to Queries

06:32
Querying a database is the equivalent of asking the database for some data. We do this with the SELECT statement. There is a lot of information we can retrieve from a query. Queries are a huge part of databases. In fact, some companies have separate people for database definition and data manipulation. One thing we can do with queries is have SQL Server evaluate an expression. An expression is could be a math problem, a function, concatenation, etc. Another thing we can do is retrieve data from tables. In this situation we have to use the FROM keyword. SQL is not picky when it comes to whitespace between keywords. Whitespace includes spaces, tabs, and new lines. The important thing to remember is that it is picky when it comes to whitespace inside of a string and you cannot put whitespace in the middle of a keyword. You can make a comment using -- for an end of line comment, or /* */ for a multiple line comment. SELECT 5 + 5 --Should be 10 /* This is commented out SELECT 10+10 */ SELECT would be much more helpful if we could SELECT data that we put into the database ourselves. This requires that we first create a table. We will spend a large amount of time creating our database and then we'll come back and go over the SELECT statement in a ton of detail. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)

SQL Tutorial - CASE Statements

10:04
Another video brought to you by BeardedDev, bringing you tutorials on Business Intelligence, SQL Programming and Data Analysis. If you are not familiar with my previous video on creating a sample set of data please check out the video here: In this video I talk about how to use CASE statements in SQL Server. CASE Statements were introduced to SQL Server in 2008. They are used to evaluate conditions and return a result based on those conditions. CASE Statements can be used in SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, WHERE, HAVING. In this CASE Tutorial we look at a common use of CASE statements within SELECT and also the benefit and common downfalls when writing CASE queries. CASE Statement Syntax: CASE WHEN [condition] THEN [result] END SQL Queries in this video: SELECT CustomerId , FirstName , MiddleName , LastName , CASE WHEN CustomerId = 5995 THEN 'Unknown' WHEN Gender = 'M' THEN 'Male' WHEN Gender = 'F' THEN 'Female' ELSE 'Unknown' END AS Gender , DOB FROM dbo.CustomersSample Please feel free to post comments.

CASE Function( IF..THEN..ELSE) in SQL ORACLE Query With Example

04:03
ORACLE/PLSQL: CASE STATEMENT The Oracle/PLSQL CASE statement has the functionality of an IF-THEN-ELSE statement. Starting in Oracle 9i, you can use the CASE statement within a SQL statement. The syntax for the Oracle/PLSQL CASE statement is: CASE [ expression ] WHEN condition_1 THEN result_1 WHEN condition_2 THEN result_2 ... WHEN condition_n THEN result_n ELSE result END --------- ARGUMENTS: expression is optional. It is the value that you are comparing to the list of conditions. (ie: condition_1, condition_2, ... condition_n) condition_1 to condition_n must all be the same datatype. Conditions are evaluated in the order listed. Once a condition is found to be true, the CASE statement will return the result and not evaluate the conditions any further. result_1 to result_n must all be the same datatype. This is the value returned once a condition is found to be true. NOTE: If no condition is found to be true, then the CASE statement will return the value in the ELSE clause. If the ELSE clause is omitted and no condition is found to be true, then the CASE statement will return NULL. You can have up to 255 comparisons in a CASE statement. Each WHEN ... THEN clause is considered 2 comparisons. Lets apply this function on emp table. Emp table has 3 dept numbers like 10,20 and 30. So if I want to display the different dept names based on ID, I have to use IF THEN ELSE condition. IF deptno=10 THEN "DEPT1" ELSE deptno=20 THEN "DEPT2" ELSE deptno=30 THEN "DEPT3" This entire IF block can be achived using CASE. CASE deptno WHEN 10 THEN 'DEPT1' WHEN 20 THEN 'DEPT2' WHEN 30 THEN 'DEPT3' ELSE 'NO DEPT' END; Query used in Video: select empno,ename,deptno,CASE deptno WHEN 10 THEN 'DEPT1' WHEN 20 THEN 'DEPT2' WHEN 30 THEN 'DEPT3' ELSE 'No Dept' END from emp;

There are several ways of finding the nth highest salary. By the end of this video, we will be able to answer all the following questions as well. How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a Sub-Query How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a CTE How to find the 2nd, 3rd or 15th highest salary Let's use the following Employees table for this demo Use the following script to create Employees table Create table Employees ( ID int primary key identity, FirstName nvarchar(50), LastName nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), Salary int ) GO Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', 'Hastings', 'Male', 60000) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', 'Pound', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Philip', 'Hastings', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Mary', 'Lambeth', 'Female', 30000) Insert into Employees values ('Valarie', 'Vikings', 'Female', 35000) Insert into Employees values ('John', 'Stanmore', 'Male', 80000) GO To find the highest salary it is straight forward. We can simply use the Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees To get the second highest salary use a sub query along with Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees where Salary [ (Select Max(Salary) from Employees) To find nth highest salary using Sub-Query SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM ( SELECT DISTINCT TOP N SALARY FROM EMPLOYEES ORDER BY SALARY DESC ) RESULT ORDER BY SALARY To find nth highest salary using CTE WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS DENSERANK FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE DENSERANK = N To find 2nd highest salary we can use any of the above queries. Simple replace N with 2. Similarly, to find 3rd highest salary, simple replace N with 3. Please Note: On many of the websites, you may have seen that, the following query can be used to get the nth highest salary. The below query will only work if there are no duplicates. WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS ROWNUMBER FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE ROWNUMBER = 3

Differences between ISNULL and NULLIF - sql server interview questions

07:48
Hi friends, in this session I am gonna discuss the differences between ISNULL and NULLIF. Both ISNULL and NULLIF are built in system functions in sql server. Lot of people get confused between these 2 system functions. Lets discuss about each of these system functions separately so that you will get better idea. 1st lets discuss about ISNULL. ISNULL: ISNUL is a system function which replaces NULL with the specified replacement value. The functionalityof ISNULL is : 1. 1st it will Evaluate the expression which is in parameter 1. 2. it will compare the evaluated expression with null. if the paramter 1 = NULL ? 3. If parameter1 is equal to null i.e., if parameter 1 is null, then isnull function returns replacement value. if parameter1is not NULL, then ISNULL function returns parameter1 I hope we are clear on ISNULL. Lets move on to the next system function, that is NULLIF. NULLIF: NULLIF is a system function which returns a null value if the two specified expressions are equal. The functionalityof NULLIF is : 1. 1st it will Evaluate both the expression which are in parameter 1 and parameter 2. 2. next it will compare both the evaluated expressions with null. 3. If both the expressions are equal, the nullif functions returns NULL. 4. If both the expressions are not equal, the nullif functions returns 1st expression. Lets conclude the discussion with the similarities and differences between ISNULL and NULLIF Similarities: Both ISNULL and NULLIF are system functions. Syntax for Both the functions are similar Both ISNULL and NULLIF functions accepts 2 input parameters. Differences: isnull function compares 1st parameter with null.where as nullif function compares 1st parameter with 2nd parameter ISNULL function returns 2nd paramter if the 1st parameter isnull. nullif function returns null is 1st parameter = 2nd paramter. ISNULL function returns 1st paramter if the 1st parameter is not null. nullif function returns 1st paramter if 1st parameter is not equal to 2nd paramter. Thanks for watching this video. Bye , Have a good Day

debugging in ssms debugging t-sql code t sql debug stored procedure sql server management studio debug stored procedure how to debug t sql debug in sql server management studio In this video we will discuss how to debug stored procedures in SQL Server. Setting up the Debugger in SSMS : If you have connected to SQL Server using (local) or . (period), and when you start the debugger you will get the following error Unable to start T-SQL Debugging. Could not connect to computer. To fix this error, use the computer name to connect to the SQL Server instead of using (local) or . For the examples in this video we will be using the following stored procedure. Create procedure spPrintEvenNumbers @Target int as Begin Declare @StartNumber int Set @StartNumber = 1 while(@StartNumber [ @Target) Begin If(@StartNumber%2 = 0) Begin Print @StartNumber End Set @StartNumber = @StartNumber + 1 End Print 'Finished printing even numbers till ' + RTRIM(@Target) End Connect to SQL Server using your computer name, and then execute the above code to create the stored procedure. At this point, open a New Query window. Copy and paste the following T-SQL code to execute the stored procedure. DECLARE @TargetNumber INT SET @TargetNumber = 10 EXECUTE spPrintEvenNumbers @TargetNumber Print 'Done' Starting the Debugger in SSMS : There are 2 ways to start the debugger 1. In SSMS, click on the Debug Menu and select Start Debugging 2. Use the keyboard shortcut ALT + F5 At this point you should have the debugger running. The line that is about to be executed is marked with an yellow arrow Step Over, Step into and Step Out in SSMS : You can find the keyboard shortcuts in the Debug menu in SSMS. Let us understand what Step Over, Step into and Step Out does when debugging the following piece of code 1. There is no difference when you STEP INTO (F11) or STEP OVER (F10) the code on LINE 2 2. On LINE 3, we are calling a Stored Procedure. On this statement if we press F10 (STEP OVER), it won't give us the opportunity to debug the stored procedure code. To be able to debug the stored procedure code you will have to STEP INTO it by pressing F11. 3. If the debugger is in the stored procedure, and you don't want to debug line by line with in that stored procedure, you can STEP OUT of it by pressing SHIFT + F11. When you do this, the debugger completes the execution of the stored procedure and waits on the next line in the main query, i.e on LINE 4 in this example. To stop debugging : There are 2 ways to stop debugging 1. In SSMS, click on the Debug Menu and select Stop Debugging 2. Use the keyboard shortcut SHIFT + F5 Show Next Statement shows the next statement that the debugger is about to execute. Run to Cursor command executes all the statements in a batch up to the current cursor position Locals Window in SSMS : Displays the current values of variables and parameters If you cannot see the locals window or if you have closed it and if you want to open it, you can do so using the following menu option. Locals window is only available if you are in DEBUG mode. Watch Window in SSMS : Just like Locals window, Watch window is used to watch the values of variables. You can add and remove variables from the watch window. To add a variable to the Watch Window, right click on the variable and select "Add Watch" option from the context menu. Call Stack Window in SSMS : Allows you to navigate up and down the call stack to see what values your application is storing at different levels. It's an invaluable tool for determining why your code is doing what it's doing. Immediate Window in SSMS : Very helpful during debugging to evaluate expressions, and print variable values. Adding Linear Regression in OBIEE Sample App

10:42
Add a linear regression line to an analysis in OBIEE 11g. Using the EVALUATE_AGGR() function in OBIEE, we will let the underlying database execute REGR_INTERCEPT() and REGR_SLOPE(). We can then use the values returned to create a linear regression line in a chart. In the form y=mx+b, REGR_SLOPE() will give us the m value we need and REGR_INTERCEPT() will give us the b value.

SQL Tutorial - CHECK Constraints

13:05
Another fantastic SQL Tutorial brought you by BeardedDev. Tutorials on SQL Querying, SQL Development, Database Administration, Data Analysis and Business Intelligence. Subscribe to the channel for more fantastic tutorials. This video contains everything you need to know about CHECK Constraints in SQL Server with working examples. CHECK Constraints allow us to enforce limits on the data that can be entered in to our tables, in this tutorial we look at preventing entering Sales Values that are less than or equal to 0, after all we don't sell anything for nothing. CHECK Constraints only prevent values that evaluate to false from being added and we work through another example of how CHECK Constraints do not prevent NULLs from being added if the Data Definition allows. All Constraints are associated with Tables so if a Table is removed the Constraint is removed too. There is another example of how we can only add CHECK Constraints to existing columns if the data within that column meets the requirements of the Constraint. We also discuss how we can query the System Table, sys.check_constraints to retrieve information about CHECK Constraints within the Database. CHECK Constraint Syntax: CREATE TABLE dbo.Sales ( Sales_Id INT IDENTITY(1, 1) , Sales_Date DATE , Sales_Value DECIMAL(16, 2) [constraint name] CHECK (Sales_Value [greater than] 0) ) ALTER TABLE [table name] ADD CONSTRAINT [constraint name] CHECK (column [less than or greater than or equal to] value) Associated Videos: Create Table with Constraints - https://youtu.be/bfBnZKf2EGg Recently Uploaded Videos: SSIS Tutorial - How to Create Connection Managers - https://youtu.be/5SNHNlBmbi8 Different Roles working with Data - https://youtu.be/lBU1XQ87cLg SQL Tutorial - Window Functions - https://youtu.be/H6OTMoXjNiM
