Vocabulary Builder Course: http://www.espressoenglish.net/vocabulary-builder-course Do you think you have a good understanding of English vocabulary? Today I'm sending you a challenging quiz to test your knowledge! Choose the best word to complete each sentence, then wait to see the correct answers. If you can improve your vocabulary, you'll have a lot more ways to express yourself in English. You'll be able to say exactly what you want, instead of trying desperately to think of the right word. Sometimes students ask me for lists of the "most common words" in English... but I don't think memorizing lists is the best way to study. Instead, you should learn words in context, in "families" (topics), and with visual aids (pictures). What's even more important is to practice the new words so that you don't forget them! In my Vocabulary Builder Courses, you'll learn hundreds of useful English words. Each lesson also includes a quiz and short-answer exercises to help these words stay in your memory. I hope to see you in one of the courses! http://www.espressoenglish.net/vocabulary-builder-course

This lesson comes from a request by Aditya from Maharashtra, India. Aditya says he is preparing for a competitive exam and he has to do reading comprehension exercises as part of the exam, and he wants to know the best way to do these. Before we start, if you want to request a lesson, just leave a comment. In your comment, tell me your name, and I will mention you in the video. OK, in this lesson I will give you some important tips and strategies for reading comprehension exercises. I will give you a reading plan that you can follow, and there are exercises in this lesson for you to practice. Alright, now my teaching experience is mostly with exams like the IELTS and TOEFL, but the tips that I give you in this lesson will help you in any exam situation. So the first thing is: when it comes to reading in an exam, budget your time. That means: you should know how many reading passages there are in the exam, how many exercises there are and how much time you have. In the IELTS exam, for example, there are three reading passages and you have one hour to do all of them. So then divide your time amongst those passages – for IELTS, you might spend roughly 20 minutes per passage. In some exams, one passage might be shorter or easier, and another passage might be longer or more difficult. In that case, obviously, you should plan to spend less time on the short passage, and more time on the long passage. And you should time yourself – if you are allowed to wear a watch in your exam, look at your watch and keep track of the time. If you plan for 20 minutes per passage, stick to that plan. Now, if you’re not allowed to wear a watch, then use the clock in the room or hall, or ask the invigilators how much time you have left. Alright, that’s the first thing: budgeting your time. So now the exam starts – and you have the first reading passage in front of you – what do you do? Well, I’ll tell you what you should NOT do – don’t start at the beginning and read slowly to the finish. Many students do this – and the problem is that when you get to the end, you will have forgotten a lot of the details in the middle, and when you read the questions, you have to go back and read the passage again to find the answers. Instead, here’s the plan that you should follow: your first step in reading should be to skim the passage. What does that mean? Well, skimming is actually something that we do with milk. It’s when you heat or boil milk, and the fat rises to the top in the form of cream. Removing that layer of fat is called skimming. When it comes to reading, skimming means to read the surface of the text quickly to understand the overall message. So if there’s a heading or title to the passage, and if there are subheadings, read all of these first. They will tell you the subject of the text. Then read the first sentence of each paragraph – they will give you a good idea of the overall message. Let’s practice this. You see two paragraphs on the screen, but only the first sentence in each paragraph is visible. Stop the video, read the sentences and try to understand the main topic in each paragraph. Alright, so what do you think the topic of the whole passage might be? It could be the negative effects of social media on children. What about the first paragraph? What is it about? Well it says that using social media can affect a child’s writing skills. And the second paragraph? It says that some people don’t agree with this – that is, the first paragraph – for two reasons: scientific reasons and practical reasons (pragmatic).

http://itepexam.com Get to know the most convenient, comprehensive, and affordable English test, the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP). iTEP exams are used by colleges, universities, secondary schools, boarding schools and businesses throughout the world. Video transcript: iTEP, or International Test of English Proficiency, is an English assessment test designed to be more convenient, comprehensive, and affordable for students and administrators alike. It can be taken on-demand over 90 minutes at secure test centers all over the world. In addition to iTEP's detailed score report, administrators can access speaking and writing samples to get a more complete picture. There are 3 types of iTEP exams. iTEP Academic is used for admissions by colleges and universities all over the United States. Intensive English programs or IEPs often use the test for placement. It can even be taken at home in these cases. iTEP scores match up to CEFR levels and can easily be compared to other tests. iTEP SLATE (Secondary Level Assessment Test of English) is specially designed for young learners and used by boarding schools and private high schools. In fact, iTEP SLATE is the most widely available and technologically advanced English test made for this market. ITEP Business tests a speaker's fluency in workplace English. It is used by large and small companies for hiring decisions, promotions, and progress monitoring. Each iTEP exam is also available in its Core form, which lasts an hour and is scored immediately. Denise Kinsella, Associate Dean, International Education Center, Santa Monica College: iTEP is an accurate and reliable measure of our students' ability to speak English. It's a very convenient test for them. It's less expensive than other tests and we get the results much more quickly so we can make an admission decision without the student having to wait a long period of time. For us, iTEP has been a better measure of our students' ability to be successful in their classes. Roger Riske, President Emeritus, Educational Resource Development Trust: I've been working in the international secondary school exchange field for more than 30 years and I have found that the SLATE test developed by Boston Educational Services is by far the most reliable, secure, and user-friendly test available on the market. It gives secondary school admissions officers and counselors the necessary information to evaluate all aspects of students' linguistic abilities: writing, reading, and understanding.

Are you thinking of taking the CAE exam? I'll tell you everything you need to know about the exam to decide if it is for you. Did you know that many people can take the CAE instead of the IELTS? If you have decided to take the CAE, I'll give you details on all the different parts of this Cambridge exam, and also tell you about the 2015 changes. Here are some of the questions that I cover in this video: - What is the exam for? - Who takes the exam? - How hard is the test? - How long is the exam? - What are the different sections of the test? - What are the different test questions like? - How is the test changing? Did you understand the lesson? Take the quiz on it here: http://ww.engvid.com/cambridge-english-exam/ TRANSCRIPT Hello, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is the CAE test. This is a Cambridge exam, and it tests the advanced level of English. So, we're going to generally look at the parts of the test, and then in the next part of the video, we'll look at the test in more detail, so you'll know exactly what to expect if you're going to take this exam. So, who takes this test? This is a test that people choose to take because they want to go to university in an English-speaking country, or you want to do a course in English at a university. You might also be taking this because you need it as part of your visa requirements. Or you might be doing it because you just want to take the test. Not so many people do that, but I've met some. What's in the test? There are five parts at the moment; a reading part, a writing part, a listening part, a speaking part, and also this use of English, which is a vocabulary and grammar combined test that's seeing where you are with that. Importantly, though, in 2015, the reading test and the use of English will be together in one part. So, that means there'll just be four... There'll be four parts 2015 onwards. This... I should also say about this test that it's a Secure English Language Test. That means that you do it in a test center and you have to prove your identity. It's a formal test, and it's one of the reasons why this test is well-respected, and you can use it to enter university and things like that, because the results that you get are trusted. You can do this test on paper or computer; you have a choice. And it tests from... At the lower end, you could be intermediate, and the top end proficiency which is very, very, very, very high. So, that's a broad survey of what's in the test. Now we're going to look at the parts in more detail. So, we have... Let's start with the reading test. The reading test is one hour and 15 minutes. There are four parts. This will be 20% of your overall mark, and you'll be expected to read 3,000 words. What kinds of text will you be reading? Well, you'll be reading newspapers, fiction, non-fiction, and promotional copy. So it could be a variety of texts that you might just encounter in life in an English-speaking country. The skills that it's looking for is... It will be looking for your ability to read for gist, which is like the general meaning, but also detail. These are different reading skills. When you're reading for detail, you'll have to find a specific part of the text and read very closely for your answer, whereas gist relates to the general meaning. And when you're answering the questions, sometimes it will be multiple choice. So, you know, A), B), C), and sometimes you'll need to fill in a gap. So, you need to go back to the test... To the text, read closely, and find your answer so you can fill in the gap. It's also testing you on your ability to interpret tone in a text. So, perhaps not just the literal words written there on the page, but when we understand tone, we get an extra sense of what it really means. And also opinion, so you're reading something, and then you're making... When you're reading it for opinion, you get a sense of what is actually meant, and you'll need to express what is meant through opinion, through people's opinion. And you'll be expected to understand the main ideas of the text as well. When we come back, we're going to look at the other parts of the test in closer detail. Let's have a look at the writing part of the exam in closer detail-this is a magnifying glass-and the use of English part of the exam. So, the writing part of the test is two questions. It's going to be 20% of your overall mark. And it's one hour, 30 minutes. Now, what you need to do in the writing test is... Question one is compulsory, that means you have to answer it; you don't have a choice. In this question, first of all, you need to read an extract, so there'll be a short text, up to 150 words, that you need to read before you write your own answer.

Get our GUIDE below: https://www.how2become.com/pass-b1-speaking-listening-english-test-british-citizenship-settlement/ The English language speaking and listening B1 exam is an important part of the process if you want to become a permanent resident or a naturalised British citizen. You must pass this test and supply the results as proof of your English language ability in your application. This test is done separately from the Life in the UK test but the results count towards the final assessment. You will need to send the details of your language test result together with the confirmation of the results from your Life in the UK test to the Home Office as part of your application. The test checks that your English level matches the descriptions of the B1 CEFR in the Common European Framework. This is the level that has been decided that people need to reach to be given citizenship or settlement. When you have passed this test then the authorities will accept that you are able to use and understand language of this level and you will have satisfied this part of the visa application process.
