Ending the Classroom Factory Model: How Technology Will Personalize Education

04:55
"With the opportunity of online learning coming on,…what we talk about is shifting from this factory model system to a student-centered one that personalizes for each and every child," says Michael Horn, co-founder of the Clayton Christensen Institute and co-author of the new book Blended: Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools. Horn recently sat down with Reason magazine Managing Editor Katherine Mangu-Ward during the National Summit on Education Reform in Washington, D.C., for a discussion of how blended learning joins traditional classroom models with software-based and online learning. Horn believes that customizing education to each student's individual needs is key for both motivation and learning. "One of the big reasons that school is so boring, quite frankly, is that we all have different learning needs at different times—different things turn us on," he states. A student struggling with fundamental skills should not be reading Shakespeare, Horn explains, but instead should be put in a blended environment that uses software to improve basic literacy before moving the student into a small group discussion with a teacher. Blended learning environments can also avoid constraining students with diverse talents or interests. As Horn declares, "The reality with online learning is you can learn from anyone, anywhere, and you can get great, talented courses and teachers to come into your classroom, in effect, even if they live across the world." He notes that it is important to give students greater educational choice as they progress to higher grade levels so that they take charge of their own learning moving forward. In the interview, Horn describes how blended learning can create a game-based classroom environment that encourages students to help each other achieve educational goals. He also discusses how, as education moves beyond traditional institutions, credentialing will have to evolve, assessments will have to become more organic, and regulations will have to become outcome-based. For the full interview, watch the video above. And subscribe to Reason TV's YouTube channel for daily content like this. Approximately 5 minutes. Interview by Katherine Mangu-Ward. Produced by Justin Monticello. Shot by Jim Epstein and Todd Krainin. Music by Elettroliti.

What is EDUCATION 3.0? What does EDUCATION 3.0 mean? EDUCATION 3.0 meaning, definition & explanation

03:17
What is EDUCATION 3.0? What does EDUCATION 3.0 mean? EDUCATION 3.0 meaning - EDUCATION 3.0 PRONUNCIATION - EDUCATION 3.0 definition - EDUCATION 3.0 explanation - How to pronounce EDUCATION 3.0? Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Education 3.0 is an umbrella term used by educational theorists to describe a variety of ways to integrate technology into learning. According to Jeff Borden, Education 3.0 entails a confluence of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and education technology, using web-based digital and mobile technology, including apps, hardware and software, and "anything else with an e in front of it." Instead of viewing digital technology as a competitor to current teaching models, Education 3.0 means actively embracing new technologies to see how they can help students learn efficiently. Writer Michael Horn describes it as moving "beyond mass education to mass-customized education through blended learning," using the flexibility of technology to help students of varying backgrounds and skills. The term has been included in the term Entrepreneurship Education 3.0 which denotes a broadening of entrepreneurship education with interdisciplinary appeal for non-business majors, according to a report in Technically Philly magazine. With Education 3.0, classes move away from traditional lectures and instead focus on interactive learning, with question and answer sessions, reviews and quizzes, discussions, labs, and other project-based learning. It usually involves customization and personalization, such that educational content is tailored to meet the needs of specific students. It can mean reversing the traditional classroom learning, in which lectures happen in class and homework is done out of class, into flipped classrooms, such that new content is delivered online while students work on assignments together in class. Lectures move online—which handles students' need for personalization—and, as one of Lee's presentations states, "What in a class? Anything but lecturing!" Class time moves away from PowerPoint, blackboards, and whiteboards and is instead devoted to interactive and applied learning—questions and answers, review and summary, quizzes, interactive problem solving, discussion, project-based learning, and labs. —?Michael Horn, 2014, in Forbes magazine The term has been used by educational theorists in South Korea and in Latin America. According to a report in Forbes magazine, schools such as the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology or KAIST are actively exploring Education 3.0. In Latin America, Educación 3.0 is being explored as a way to make education affordable to poor people throughout the region, and to help ameliorate poverty.

Understanding the National Education Technology Plan

35:12
Please join Future Ready Schools (FRS) in a webinar that is part of the FRS Leadership Hub, a one-stop-shop of professional learning opportunities for school leaders. This Google Hangout will explore the National Education Technology Plan (NETP), the flagship education technology policy document for the United States. The 2016 NETP, Future Ready Learning: Reimagining the Role of Technology in Education, articulates a vision of equity, active use, and collaborative leadership to make everywhere, all-the-time learning possible. While acknowledging the continuing need to provide greater equity of access to technology itself, the plan goes further to call upon all involved in American education to ensure equity of access to transformational learning experiences enabled by technology. The principles and examples provided in the plan align with Title IV A (Activities to Support the Effective Use of Technology) of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015. As lead on the revised 2016 NETP, Zac Chase from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology will share insights into the plan’s development, desired outcomes, key themes, resources, and how the plan can benefit all school districts across the nation. FRS’s Tom Murray will moderate this engaging conversation on the vision for educational technology in the nation. Mr. Chase and Mr. Murray will also address questions submitted by viewers from across the country.

Brian Wong Interview About Education, Technology & Entrepreneurship

14:38
This video features a 15 minute interview with the successful young tech entrepreneur, Brian Wong. The questions are asked by Bodwell High School's Assistant Director of Admissions, Boris Remes. Wong is 23 years old and was born and raised in Vancouver. He received his high school diploma at 14 and received a commerce degree from UBC at 18. One of his most recent ventures, Kiip, made him one of the youngest Internet entrepreneurs to raise venture capital. He received the initial inspiration for Kiip on an airplane as he observed his fellow passengers interacting with their iPads. He noticed that many passengers were playing games, and felt that the games’ advertisements took up screen space without adding any real value. Because he perceived that games are a “holy grail of achievement,” Wong wanted to leverage key moments of achievement, such as level ups and high scores, with a targeted, relevant rewards program that enabled brands to reach consumers when they were most engaged. Wong has spoken at several popular conferences, including TEDx and SXSW, and been profiled in such global publications as Forbes, Entrepreneur, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Inc. Magazine. He was on the cover of the September 2014 issue of Entrepreneur as one of the young millionaires changing the world. He was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list at the age of 20, one of “The Top 5 Young Entrepreneurs to Watch” by Mashable, and one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20. Technology, fine art & design in STEAM EDU: Sherri Dodd at TEDxHarambee

16:25
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) TEDxHarambee - STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Music). Milwaukee's first TEDx event. May 9th 2013 in Harambee — a neighborhood with a rich and diverse history and a thriving arts and cultural center in Milwaukee. Technology, Fine Art & Design in STEAM EDU Any STEAM EDU program serious about preparing students for innovation will hold Technology, Fine Art & Design at its core. Innovation demands creativity, and knowledge and skill are the prerequisites. Sophisticated artistic literacy is an essential skill, enabling students to apply concepts fundamental to the disciplines of science, engineering and math in a variety of unique situations. Incorporating technology provides a relevant learning experience, allowing students to actualize key concepts and express original ideas. Technology, Fine Art & Design is found at the heart of any flourishing STEAM community. Sherri Dodd is the Director of Educational Technology at Milwaukee Montessori School where she strives to continuously strengthen and deepen the integration of technology across the curriculum. She is a strong proponent for establishing relevancy and purpose as a means of engagement, taking an experiential approach to teaching. For the past two summers, Sherri has also taught game design as part of Marquette University's Upward Bound program. Sherri often seeks to make connections beyond school, with her students being published in The Journal Sentinel, featured on "Making Milwaukee Great", speaking at the Wisconsin Diabetes Council in Madison, and participating in the National STEM Video Game Challenge -- where a first place win in 2011 resulted in a student visit to The White House. The recent recipient of a grant from the Entertainment Software Association, Sherri has catapulted students into virtual three-dimensional space with MinecraftEdu and forged a bond between digital and physical worlds with a MakerBot 3D printer. Her ultimate goal is to replicate "The World Peace Game" in MinecraftEdu, allowing students to play the renowned political simulation game with cohorts from around the world. As students and teachers alike work to build capacity, Sherri further expands their worldview by sharing her occasional tweets with the Curiosity on the planet Mars, whose earthbound drivers also navigate in virtual 3D space. Sherri has a strong liberal arts background, graduating summa cum laude from The American University in Washington, D.C. with a double-major in Spanish Language and Latin American Studies, and a double- minor in French and Secondary Education. Although she would have preferred a career in international espionage, she was inexplicitly drawn to teaching as a vocation. Sherri returned to her impossibly deep roots in North Carolina, helping to establish a K-12 Spanish language program grounded in proficiency standards. After a decade of teaching in a rural public school, she took a break from education and entered the field of Human Resources in the engineering and technology sector, developing competencies in employment law, organizational development, and motivational compensation strategies. When her family moved to Milwaukee six years ago, she took the opportunity to return to teaching as her first love. The years working as a member of a global team in a high tech environment combined with her previous experience in education uniquely positioned Sherri to assume the lead role for advancing technology at Milwaukee Montessori School in 2010. Sherri embodies the spirit of the modern independent learner by regularly completing classes, attending conferences, accessing online resources, and developing personal learning networks on Edmodo and Twitter (@sh3rr1mms) as she seeks the knowledge and skills required to prepare students for the unknown future. Having followed the evolution of STEAM for the past few years, she is actively exploring integration with the Maker Movement. With children both at home and at school, Sherri finds that her personal and professional interests frequently intertwine and inform each other. Among her numerous casual interests she counts genealogy, storytelling, slow cooking, doodle stitching, and window shopping. It should be noted that rarely does a book pass through Sherri's hands unread, or a cookie cross her path uneaten. The laundry however, can sometimes wait.

Defining America: History, Culture, Education, Technology, Cuisine (2003)

01:14:34
In the mid-1960s, Halberstam covered the Civil Rights Movement for The New York Times. He was sent on assignment to Poland, where he soon became 'an attraction from behind the Iron Curtain' to the artistic boheme in Warsaw. The result of that fascination was a 12-year marriage to one of the most popular young actresses of that time, Elżbieta Czyżewska, on June 13, 1965. Initially well received by the communist regime, two years later he was expelled from the country as persona non grata for publishing an article in The New York Times, criticizing the Polish government. Czyżewska followed him, becoming an outcast herself; that decision disrupted her career in the country where she was a big star, adored by millions. In the spring of 1967, Halberstam traveled with Martin Luther King Jr. from New York City to Cleveland and then to Berkeley, California for a Harper's article, "The Second Coming of Martin Luther King". While at the Times, he gathered material for his book The Making of a Quagmire: America and Vietnam during the Kennedy Era. Halberstam next wrote about President John F. Kennedy's foreign policy decisions on the Vietnam War in The Best and the Brightest. In 1972, Halberstam went to work on his next book, The Powers That Be, published in 1979 and featuring profiles of media titans like William S. Paley of CBS, Henry Luce of Time magazine, and Phil Graham of The Washington Post. In 1980 his brother, cardiologist Michael J. Halberstam, was murdered during a burglary.[9] Halberstam made his only public comment related to his brother's murder when he and Michael's widow castigated Life magazine, then published monthly, for paying Michael's killer $9,000 to pose in jail for color photographs that appeared on inside pages of the February 1981 edition of Life.[10] In 1991, Halberstam wrote The Next Century, in which he argued that, after the end of the Cold War, the United States was likely to fall behind economically to other countries such as Japan and Germany. After publishing four books in the 1960s, including the novel The Noblest Roman, The Making of a Quagmire, and The Unfinished Odyssey of Robert Kennedy, he wrote three books in the 1970s, four books in the 1980s, and six books in the 1990s, including his 1999 The Children which chronicled the 1959–1962 Nashville Student Movement. He wrote four more books in the 2000s and was working on at least two others at the time of his death. In the wake of 9/11, Halberstam wrote a book about the events in New York City, Firehouse, which describes the life of the men from Engine 40, Ladder 35 of the New York City Fire Department. The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War, the last book Halberstam completed, was published posthumously in September 2007. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Halberstam Image By Chris Willis from Palo Alto, California, USA (Gorgeous Model with beautiful eyes) [CC BY 2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Technology articles. 2017 Latest updates

10:56
This video walks through searching Education Source and ERIC for articles on a specific topic- integrating technology in the classroom. Robots - 2016 News and Articles - Robotic Technology(Full Documentary) As humans, all of our greatest dreams and biggest fears about technology seem to be provoked by the stirring topic of robotic technologies. Robots have the potential to eliminate a great amount of monotonous work, provide assistance to human workers and serve in highly specialized environments, like hospitals or factories. At the same time, people can be concerned with how this technology will change daily life and worry about increasing isolation among humans or the loss of a job as a result. Even major names in technology development have showed signs of being spooked by robotics. In a talk given at a technology symposium held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk called robots the “biggest existential threat” to the human race, even arguing for national and international regulatory oversight on artificial (AI) development. Musk is even an investor in robotics, having put money into the AI development firm Vicarious, making his unease over the negative potential of robotics all the more telling. This holiday season, robots will likely have a much higher profile than they typically enjoy. Retail stores will prove to be a major testing ground for the consumer use of robotic technologies, as Lowe’s recently unveiled a lineup of robotic sales assistants, known as OSHbots, for certain stores. The robot can communicate in multiple languages and can direct customers to the exact location of an item they’re seeking in the store. Collision avoidance and autonomous navigation technologies are incorporated into these sales assistants, helping them travel across large stores safely. Robots have been here for a while but will likely be taking a much greater role in our daily lives. As we found in researching this technology, there are those who still believe that the utopian robotic future of The Jetsons is still very much within our grasp. In today’s article, we’ll look at some of the current activities in robotic development, break down some of the issues facing robotics technologies in our world and view some of the most recently issued patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect inventions in this field.
