San Francisco brick boiler room turned industrial tiny house

13:57
Architect Christi Azevedo transformed a tiny boiler room in her San Francisco backyard into a compact home crafted like custom furniture. Trained in metalworking and furniture building, everything is tailored to create a home that feels much larger than its 88 square feet (8 feet wide by 11 feet deep). Steel + Residential Architecture - An Architect's How-to Guide

07:48
Quintessentially modern, steel is a material born of industrial processes. It’s forged in fire and rolled or drawn into shapes — beams, tubes, wires, angles, plates. Steel is strong, durable, conductive, ductile, machinable and malleable. And while many think of the use of steel in a residential setting as a particularly cold form of modernism, steel can be wonderfully warm and inviting when contrasted with natural materials. In this video I review the essential qualities of steel and how they can be leverage for use in a residential setting. I discuss: 1. Strength - hot vs. cold-rolled 2. Weight - (steel is sold by the pound) 3. Durability (alloys) 4. Appearance 5. Lightness - thickness vs. strength 6. Finishes - brushed, matte, polished 7. Other treatments: blackening, galvanizing, cutting and folding 8. Landscape uses - Corten -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? How would a Swiss Army knife look if it were a tiny house

25:42
All of the furniture and rooms in Leonardo Di Chiara’s tiny house fold, swing and pivot into the walls so when closed the space is absent of color, like a whiteboard perfect for the creative process of a young architect. Calling it aVOID in reference to the hollow shell it can morph into, Di Chiara says it’s more aspirational than a reflection of his not-yet-hyper-minimalist lifestyle, He wanted an uncluttered lifestyle but he also wanted to be mobile and to live in a big city. His solution, to build a row house on wheels. Di Chiara has currently wedged his row house between two tiny houses on the campus of the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin where Van Bo Le-Mentzel, designer of the "one square meter" house, has organized a tiny living experiment. Di Chiara hopes to continue the experimenting when he moves to Milan. His idea is to create a prototype for a Migratory Neighborhood that could be replicated across Europe so urban nomads like himself could find temporary places to park their homes in schools (during the summer), parks (in winter), abandoned lots, etc. He sees it as a win win for cities eager to keep eyes on the street in isolated or temporarily unused parts of town. aVOID on tour - Berlin to Rome, April-June 2018 (tiny talks, house visits...): http://www.leonardodichiara.it/avoidontour/ aVOID: www.leonardodichiara.it/ Migratory Neighborhoods (Leonardo is currently collecting information from those interested in joining hi.m): https://www.facebook.com/pg/migratoryneighborhood/ Leonardo's collaborators: DMM (metal covering and kitchen top), Makte (wood), Häfele (furniture hardware), iGuzzini (lights), Bosch (battery and home appliances), Omar (trailer), Giommi (windows making), Schüco (windows products), Gessi (taps and sink), BTicino (electric plugs), Noctis (mattress and pillows), Mottura (curtains), FG Arredamenti (carpenter for interior), Subissati (wooden structure), Faber (induction stove and kitchen hood), Legnotech (structure construction), ICA (bio paintings), Ambivalent (foldable chairs), G.R. Text from Memorial Marker at location Notable for early use of International Style architectural concepts in creating "model" industrial housing. Located 1/4-mile north of here. The homes, built by the D L and W Railroad's Coal Division for forty Truesdale Colliery employees, were opened in 1913. Constructed of poured concrete, the twenty two-story rectangular double houses surrounded a park. Controlled by the Glen Alden Coal Company after 1921; abandoned in 1924. Vipp Shelter tiny prefab as precise industrial-era appliance

19:32
The Danish company VIPP (famous for its iconic 1939 wastebasket, now in the MOMA) has created a prefab tiny home designed down to the last detail (flashlight included). Their 592-square-foot “plug and play getaway” wasn’t designed to blend into nature, but to float above it; fifty thousand pounds of glass and steel serve as a frame for the surrounding landscape. VIPP designer Morten Bo Jensen explains that the shelter wasn’t designed as a piece of architecture, but an industrial object. The prefab structure is built in a factory and the four modules are transported by truck to the site. The shelter can be constructed in 3 to 5 days using just bolts for the modules and 9,000 screws for the steel plates. The small prefab can house 4 people: 2 on a daybed and 2 in a loft bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide open and closed with mechanical rollers, designed to move the 400 or 500-kilo doors with ease. “We kind of like this idea that you just grab it and slide it open,” explains Jensen, “instead of motorized solutions that would be more different from our philosophy of very mechanical products that just last for a long time.” https://www.vipp.com/en/shelter/the-vipp-shelter/ Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/vipp-shelter-tiny-prefab-as-precise-industrial-era-appliance/

The Craftsman- House Style Series by Joel Perry of Indwell Architecture and Design

03:47
Does your house have style? Of course it does! But which one? I’ve asked Joel Perry with Indwell Architecture to talk about some of the common house styles around here. This week we are focusing on one of the most popular house styles in the Prairie Village area: the Craftsman. Where did it come from? Most house styles evolve from a certain place because of things like weather and available building materials. The Craftsman style is different because it originated through a social movement. In the early 20th century, the Industrial Revolution was in full swing. Thomas Edison was a rock star, and Henry Ford would soon be one. People were moving from the country to the city. Technology was becoming more pervasive in people’s lives. And some people didn’t like that. They didn’t like mass production. They wanted to preserve the work of the individual craftsman and artisan. So, a house style evolved that used lots of natural products, and felt very connected to the earth. It was a style that would make it clear that skilled hands had worked to make it. Interesting Facts/Features: Low sloped gabled roofs with wide eave overhangs make the house feel substantial Lots of stone and wood Usually only 1 or 1 ½ stories Lots of exposed rafters and beams Generous porches with plenty of room for swings Lots of built in woodwork (benches, paneling, etc.) One of the first open floor plan styles Fireplaces, and if you are lucky, an inglenook Less paint, more stain If it were a person: It would be a bearded (I guess most men are anymore, so I don’t think that is very descriptive), opinionated woodcarver/hippie who hikes a lot and has thought deeply about most everything. He has a hint of a surfer accent. You know the type? He doesn’t have a cell phone or a tv. He loves having long discussions about topics, and quickly recognizes beauty when he sees it. When you stay at his house, he fixes you dinner using home grown herbs, with home brewed tangerine and maple syrup beer and in the morning you get coffee that he brews by hand (I don’t actually know what that means). Words: Gable: part of an exterior wall that encloses the end of a roof Inglenook: a recessed area around a fireplace. Feels like a reading nook or a restaurant booth. Very sexy. Eave: The part of the roof that overhangs the side wall Arts and Crafts: A connected movement, often used as another name for Craftsman. Greene Brothers: The architect brothers from Pasadena that are usually credited with starting the movement. Tricycle House by People's Industrial Design and People's Architecture Office

01:34
The Tricycle House addresses the theme "The People's Future" for the 2012 Get It Louder Exhibition in Beijing. Private ownership of land in China does not exist, and The Tricycle House suggests a future embrace of the temporary relationship between people and the land they occupy. In a crowded Chinese city single family homes can be affordable and sustainable, parking lots are used at night, and traffic jams are acceptable.
As a construction method we experimented with folded plastic. Each piece of the house is cut with a CNC router, scored, folded and welded into shape. The plastic, polypropylene, can be folded without losing its strength. Therefore the house can open up to the outside, expand like an accordion for more space, and connect to other houses. The plastic is translucent allowing the interior to be lit by the sun during the day or street lamps at night.

The Tricycle House is man-powered and operates off-the-grid. Facilities in the house include a sink and stove, a bathtub, a water tank, and furniture that can transform from a bed to a dining table and bench to a bench and counter top. The sink, stove, and bathtub can collapse into the front wall of the house. For more information please visit www.peoples-products.com and www.peoples-architecture.com

Kedem Shinar bases boxy Israel home on Bauhaus architecture

03:14
Tel Aviv architect Kedem Shinar drew on Israel's Bauhaus architecture and her training in Japan, to create the clean lines of this bright white house in Carmey Yossef. The 350-square-metre residence is set on a plot surrounded by pine, cypress and olive trees in Carmey Yossef, a settlement between Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem. For the design, Shinar took her cues from the International Style developed at the Bauhaus, the renowned German art school that ran between 1919 and 1933. Over 4,000 Bauhaus style buildings were constructed in Tel-Aviv between 1920-1940, according to the city's Bauhaus Centre. Gridded glazing, suspended porches and concrete, give CY House a semi-industrial aesthetic and reference the Bauhaus building itself. "The design idea, which draws inspiration from Japanese architecture, the De Stijl style and local Bauhaus architecture, was to merge the light and the landscape with the space of the house by using an interplay of walls and openings," explained Kedem Shinar, "some transparent and some opaque, a play of open and closed, and exposed and protected." Inside, a black grand piano takes centre-stage in the Eames-inspired interior, which features a double-height living space. Two bedrooms and bathrooms are located off this central living space. A305/04: Industrial Architecture: AEG and Fagus Factories

26:01
In the context of the exhibition The University Is Now on Air: Broadcasting Modern Architecture, the CCA presents twenty-four broadcasts from the course A305, History of Architecture and Design 1890–1939, by The Open University. To learn more about the project, visit https://www.cca.qc.ca/A305. In television broadcast 4, Tim Benton compares the industrial buildings by Peter Behrens for the AEG (General Electrical Company of Germany) in Berlin with the almost exactly contemporaneous Fagus shoe-last factory which Walter Gropius designed for Karl Benscheidt, in Alfeld-an-der-Leine, both built just before the First World War. […] The Fagus factory is often referred to as the first really ‘modern’ building, while the AEG buildings, at first sight, appear to have a markedly classical aesthetic. Written by Tim Benton, directed by Nick Levinson, produced the BBC/Open University, aired 15 March 1975 on BBC2.

Living out of a storage locker for 2 months, in style!

08:50
I had just came back from hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and found myself homeless. I had given up my apartment to go hike and now that I was back I wanted to turn my car into a livable space. I eventually did that (You can see it here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLA2hTuXLig) but found I still needed access to lots of stuff from my storage unit which was 6x4x10 and everything was just jammed in there. I figured there had to be a better way. I scoped out a 10x10x6 unit and moved all my stuff inside. Still super small, I managed to build shelves and organize it in a way where everything is accessible. But why stop there! I decided to build shelves and a water system and setup my actual apartment so I could live there. I was moving in! I ended up living in the unit for around 2 months. I only spent around $100 making the space as efficient as I did, mostly because I already owned so much hardware. The cost of rent on my unit was $205 a month (which included insurance). A bargain, considering an apartment in the area was $1000+ a month. I made this video showcasing my work/unit. "For licensing inquiries please contact [email protected]".

victorian style houses design ideas

03:04
SUBSCRIBE for daily new ideas and many more others victorian style houses design ideas In the United Kingdom and former British colonies, a# Victorian house generally means any house built during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). During the Industrial Revolution, successive housing booms resulted in the building of many millions of Victorian houses which are now a defining feature of most #British towns and cities.[1] In the UK, #Victorian houses follow a wide range of architectural styles. Starting from the early classicism inherited from Regency architecture, the Italianate style gained influence in the 1820 and 1850s, and the Gothic Revival style became prevalent by the 1880s. Later in the Victorian era, the Queen Anne style and the Arts and Crafts movement increased in influence, resulting in the transition to styles typically seen in Edwardian houses. Victorian houses are also found in many former #British colonies where the style might be adapted to local building materials or customs, for example in Sydney, Australia and Melaka, Malaysia. Bauhaus : A History Of Modern Architecture

14:37
Bauhaus : A History Of Modern Architecture Staatliches Bauhaus (About this sound listen (help·info)), commonly known simply as Bauhaus, was an art school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicised and taught. It operated from 1919 to 1933. At that time the German term About this sound Bauhaus (help·info)—literally "construction house"—was understood as meaning "School of Building". The Bauhaus was first founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus, during the first years of existence, did not have an architecture department. Nonetheless, it was founded with the idea of creating a "total" work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, Modernist architecture and art, design and architectural education. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography. Amazing DIY European Style Tiny House With Pizza Oven

The Gypsy Mermaid is undoubtably one of the most creative and artistic tiny house builds that we have visited to date. There are features in this home that I didn't believe to be possible in a tiny house such as a fully functional feature pizza oven right in the middle of the home which provides both ample warmth and amazing pizza! Become a Living Big Patron: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig This couple loves to travel and were greatly inspired by European style in their build, especially when it came to the interior decor of the home. The entire place was constructed by the couple as a DIY build for the unbelievable price of only $15,000, largely thanks to the amount of reclaimed materials that have gone into the tiny home's construction. Tokyo's impermanent skinny house made to age well with owners

12:24
Inheritance taxes on land in Japan means plots often get smaller as they are passed on. This “divide and sell” phenomenon in Tokyo translates into some very tiny home sites. When architects Masahiro and Mao Harada were tasked with creating a home on a lot only 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide at its narrowest point, they chose to interpret small as “near” and use the small scale to their advantage. On the narrowest portion of the lot, along the street, they created a “gatehouse”: used as both an entryway and offices for the clients. The lower level is a gallery for the wife’s art, which is mostly, appropriately, very tiny objects. The second floor, accessible only by a small, wooden ladder, houses the husband’s office with walls lined with books and movies (he directs commercial). Everything in the Gatehouse is within touching distance, and this is important, and a positive thing. Masahiro calls this type of design “peach skin”. “The nearness between the materials and my eye make clear the very small grains, like a peach skin, so the resolution is richer. When you see big things from a distance you can miss details.” Behind the Gatehouse, the lot opens up a bit to accommodate the rest of the home. To comply with building codes limiting home height, the Haradas chose to build the home a few feet underground. Again, they chose to see this as an advantage, allowing for a partly submerged bedroom and bathroom, that allow one to feel “like an animal” while having a bath in the ground or “like an insect” when lying on the bed, at eye level with the plants. After the small, intimate room downstairs the completely open, and high-ceilinged, upstairs feels large. Here one wall is dedicated to a kitchen (partly camouflaged behind tan doors and cabinets) and the other to a full-wall bookshelf which is also structural. Masahiro explains the benefits of using vertical shelf supports that are narrow and very close to each other: the material is cheap; it can be brought in by hand; and it can be created without heavy equipment and instead, by skilled craftspeople. For the interior finish on both the walls and the floors, they used MDF (medium-density fiberboard) both because it is very affordable, but also because it resembles the paper walls in traditional Japanese homes. “Here we use paper and wooden materials and everything can return to the earth, so the time scale is near, or small,” explains Masahiro. “We are always thinking about scale. Scale isn’t just big or small. Scale is also time. This building has a permanent quality, but it also feels ephemeral. This house lives with people, and dies with people, and that’s a good thing.” Mount Fuji Architects: http://fuji-studio.jp/ Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/tokyos-impermanent-skinny-house-made-to-age-well-with-owners/

CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES A VIEW OF MID CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE Full Version

56:18
CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES: A VIEW OF MID-CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE international-style architecture; A Utopian Ideal Modern architecture or modernist architecture is a term applied to an overarching movement, with its exact definition and scope varying widely.[1] The term is often applied to modernist movements at the turn of the 20th century, with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification.[1] The term Modern architecture may be used to differentiate from Classical architecture following Vitruvian ideals, while it is also applied to various contemporary architecture styles such as Postmodern, High-tech or even New Classical, depending on the context. In art history, the revolutionary and neoclassical styles that evolved around 1800 are also called modern. The concept of modernism is a central theme in the efforts of 20th century modern architecture. Gaining global popularity especially after the Second World War, architectural modernism was adopted by many architects and architectural educators, and continued as a dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate buildings into the 21st century. Modernism eventually generated reactions, most notably Postmodernism which sought to preserve pre-modern elements, while "Neo-modernism" has emerged as a reaction to Post-modernism. Notable architects important to the history and development of the modernist movement include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Gerrit Rietveld, Bruno Taut, Arne Jacobsen, Oscar Niemeyer and Alvar Aalto. Common themes of modern architecture include: the notion that "Form follows function", a dictum originally expressed by Frank Lloyd Wright's early mentor Louis Sullivan, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose simplicity and clarity of forms and elimination of "unnecessary detail" materials at 90 degrees to each other visual expression of structure (as opposed to the hiding of structural elements) the related concept of "Truth to materials", meaning that the true nature or natural appearance of a material ought to be seen rather than concealed or altered to represent something else use of industrially-produced materials; adoption of the machine aesthetic particularly in International Style modernism, a visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines

From old Belgian water tank to dream tower house with a view

13:26
Patrick Mets loves “old, industrial buildings” and he’s always been fascinated by water towers. After years of scouting the Belgian countryside he found one for sale (for 30,000 euros or about $43,000 at the time) and began working to convert it into a home. “It was quite naive that we bought it because we didn’t have any permit to convert it into something else,” explains Mets. “And so it took us 12 years, 7 years to get the necessary permit and 5 years of renovation work.” Working with designer Mauro Brigham (NC & Bham), they tried to leave as much of the tower in its original state. Fortunately the 30-meter-high (90 feet) tower was built with windows- an oddity for a water tower-, but forty of them keep the converted home well lit. The water tank itself was kept mainly intact. Brigham and Mets added a floor inside it and cut holes out of the sides for views and it now serves as the kitchen and living room. After a couple years using the space as their full-time home, Mets and his partner Valérie Lecherf moved out to be closer to their daughters’ school. Today they rent the “Chateau d’Eau” for special events.
