Text from Memorial Marker at location Notable for early use of International Style architectural concepts in creating "model" industrial housing. Located 1/4-mile north of here. The homes, built by the D L and W Railroad's Coal Division for forty Truesdale Colliery employees, were opened in 1913. Constructed of poured concrete, the twenty two-story rectangular double houses surrounded a park. Controlled by the Glen Alden Coal Company after 1921; abandoned in 1924. Quintessentially modern, steel is a material born of industrial processes. It’s forged in fire and rolled or drawn into shapes — beams, tubes, wires, angles, plates. Steel is strong, durable, conductive, ductile, machinable and malleable. And while many think of the use of steel in a residential setting as a particularly cold form of modernism, steel can be wonderfully warm and inviting when contrasted with natural materials. In this video I review the essential qualities of steel and how they can be leverage for use in a residential setting. I discuss: 1. Strength - hot vs. cold-rolled 2. Weight - (steel is sold by the pound) 3. Durability (alloys) 4. Appearance 5. Lightness - thickness vs. strength 6. Finishes - brushed, matte, polished 7. Other treatments: blackening, galvanizing, cutting and folding 8. The Danish company VIPP (famous for its iconic 1939 wastebasket, now in the MOMA) has created a prefab tiny home designed down to the last detail (flashlight included). Their 592-square-foot “plug and play getaway” wasn’t designed to blend into nature, but to float above it; fifty thousand pounds of glass and steel serve as a frame for the surrounding landscape. VIPP designer Morten Bo Jensen explains that the shelter wasn’t designed as a piece of architecture, but an industrial object. The prefab structure is built in a factory and the four modules are transported by truck to the site. The shelter can be constructed in 3 to 5 days using just bolts for the modules and 9,000 screws for the steel plates. The small prefab can house 4 people: 2 on a daybed and 2 in a loft bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide open and closed with mechanical rollers, designed to move the 400 or 500-kilo doors with ease. “We kind of like this idea that you just grab it and slide it open,” explains Jensen, “instead of motorized solutions that would be more different from our philosophy of very mechanical products that just last for a long time.” https://www.vipp.com/en/shelter/the-vipp-shelter/ Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/vipp-shelter-tiny-prefab-as-precise-industrial-era-appliance/

In the context of the exhibition The University Is Now on Air: Broadcasting Modern Architecture, the CCA presents twenty-four broadcasts from the course A305, History of Architecture and Design 1890–1939, by The Open University. To learn more about the project, visit https://www.cca.qc.ca/A305. In television broadcast 4, Tim Benton compares the industrial buildings by Peter Behrens for the AEG (General Electrical Company of Germany) in Berlin with the almost exactly contemporaneous Fagus shoe-last factory which Walter Gropius designed for Karl Benscheidt, in Alfeld-an-der-Leine, both built just before the First World War. […] The Fagus factory is often referred to as the first really ‘modern’ building, while the AEG buildings, at first sight, appear to have a markedly classical aesthetic. Written by Tim Benton, directed by Nick Levinson, produced the BBC/Open University, aired 15 March 1975 on BBC2.

Tel Aviv architect Kedem Shinar drew on Israel's Bauhaus architecture and her training in Japan, to create the clean lines of this bright white house in Carmey Yossef. The 350-square-metre residence is set on a plot surrounded by pine, cypress and olive trees in Carmey Yossef, a settlement between Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem. For the design, Shinar took her cues from the International Style developed at the Bauhaus, the renowned German art school that ran between 1919 and 1933. Over 4,000 Bauhaus style buildings were constructed in Tel-Aviv between 1920-1940, according to the city's Bauhaus Centre. Gridded glazing, suspended porches and concrete, give CY House a semi-industrial aesthetic and reference the Bauhaus building itself. "The design idea, which draws inspiration from Japanese architecture, the De Stijl style and local Bauhaus architecture, was to merge the light and the landscape with the space of the house by using an interplay of walls and openings," explained Kedem Shinar, "some transparent and some opaque, a play of open and closed, and exposed and protected." Inside, a black grand piano takes centre-stage in the Eames-inspired interior, which features a double-height living space. Two bedrooms and bathrooms are located off this central living space. If ever there was a home that exemplified the phrase ‘champagne taste on a beer budget’, this clever North Canterbury place is it. For a modest investment, the owners have themselves a stunning, contemporary L-shaped barn-style nest. Clad in Black Colorsteel and cedar shiplap cladding, the cool exterior signals the innovation within. Suffice to say the interior of this three-bedroom, two bathroom home, is not afraid to stand out from the crowd. The dark-walled kitchen, with white-trimmed ply cabinetry, is given industrial-scale drama with a concrete benchtop and flooring. Although the total footprint is compact at 131sqm nothing is compromised. One of the bathrooms is a total knock-out with trendy mismatched patterned cement tiles, juxtaposed with white subway tiles, a black-framed shower and black tapware. This truly is a family home that punches above its weight and postively oozes style. As a result, it won the Resene New Home up to $450,000 National Award. Bauhaus : A History Of Modern Architecture Staatliches Bauhaus (About this sound listen (help·info)), commonly known simply as Bauhaus, was an art school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicised and taught. It operated from 1919 to 1933. At that time the German term About this sound Bauhaus (help·info)—literally "construction house"—was understood as meaning "School of Building". The Bauhaus was first founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus, during the first years of existence, did not have an architecture department. Nonetheless, it was founded with the idea of creating a "total" work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, Modernist architecture and art, design and architectural education. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography. CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES: A VIEW OF MID-CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE international-style architecture; A Utopian Ideal Modern architecture or modernist architecture is a term applied to an overarching movement, with its exact definition and scope varying widely. The term is often applied to modernist movements at the turn of the 20th century, with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification. The term Modern architecture may be used to differentiate from Classical architecture following Vitruvian ideals, while it is also applied to various contemporary architecture styles such as Postmodern, High-tech or even New Classical, depending on the context. In art history, the revolutionary and neoclassical styles that evolved around 1800 are also called modern. The concept of modernism is a central theme in the efforts of 20th century modern architecture. Gaining global popularity especially after the Second World War, architectural modernism was adopted by many architects and architectural educators, and continued as a dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate buildings into the 21st century. Modernism eventually generated reactions, most notably Postmodernism which sought to preserve pre-modern elements, while "Neo-modernism" has emerged as a reaction to Post-modernism. Notable architects important to the history and development of the modernist movement include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Gerrit Rietveld, Bruno Taut, Arne Jacobsen, Oscar Niemeyer and Alvar Aalto. Common themes of modern architecture include: the notion that "Form follows function", a dictum originally expressed by Frank Lloyd Wright's early mentor Louis Sullivan, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose simplicity and clarity of forms and elimination of "unnecessary detail" materials at 90 degrees to each other visual expression of structure (as opposed to the hiding of structural elements) the related concept of "Truth to materials", meaning that the true nature or natural appearance of a material ought to be seen rather than concealed or altered to represent something else use of industrially-produced materials; adoption of the machine aesthetic particularly in International Style modernism, a visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines

The Tricycle House addresses the theme "The People's Future" for the 2012 Get It Louder Exhibition in Beijing. Private ownership of land in China does not exist, and The Tricycle House suggests a future embrace of the temporary relationship between people and the land they occupy. In a crowded Chinese city single family homes can be affordable and sustainable, parking lots are used at night, and traffic jams are acceptable. As a construction method we experimented with folded plastic. Each piece of the house is cut with a CNC router, scored, folded and welded into shape. The plastic, polypropylene, can be folded without losing its strength. Therefore the house can open up to the outside, expand like an accordion for more space, and connect to other houses. The plastic is translucent allowing the interior to be lit by the sun during the day or street lamps at night. The Tricycle House is man-powered and operates off-the-grid. Facilities in the house include a sink and stove, a bathtub, a water tank, and furniture that can transform from a bed to a dining table and bench to a bench and counter top. The sink, stove, and bathtub can collapse into the front wall of the house. For more information please visit www.peoples-products.com and www.peoples-architecture.com

It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin. Architect George Suyama wonders if his early years in a Japanese American internment camp led to his love for simplicity. “My theory is that we had nothing there so I became obsessed with little things. I was at a camp in Idaho called Minidoka and it was a tarpaper barracks. They were long shed buildings, I don’t know how many families lived in them, you had one window and a stove area and there were curtains that separated one family from another. Maybe because there was nothing there that I wanted to make everything as simple as I could.“ For five years, he and his wife lived in a tiny 500-square-foot fishing shack in West Seattle. When they bought the narrow lot next door, they wanted to recapture that simplicity. Determined not to remove a single tree, Suyama designed a home 18-feet-wide. To reduce the visual noise of the home the walls, roof, ceiling, floor are all one color (matching the surrounding trees). The only exception is a white box that runs nearly the length of the home which houses the service elements- kitchen, bathroom, stairs and bedroom- and a loft. http://www.suyamapetersondeguchi.com/d Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/seattle-architect-builds-simple-tiny-home-inspired-by-own-bio/

All of the furniture and rooms in Leonardo Di Chiara’s tiny house fold, swing and pivot into the walls so when closed the space is absent of color, like a whiteboard perfect for the creative process of a young architect. Calling it aVOID in reference to the hollow shell it can morph into, Di Chiara says it’s more aspirational than a reflection of his not-yet-hyper-minimalist lifestyle, He wanted an uncluttered lifestyle but he also wanted to be mobile and to live in a big city. His solution, to build a row house on wheels. Di Chiara has currently wedged his row house between two tiny houses on the campus of the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin where Van Bo Le-Mentzel, designer of the "one square meter" house, has organized a tiny living experiment. Di Chiara hopes to continue the experimenting when he moves to Milan. His idea is to create a prototype for a Migratory Neighborhood that could be replicated across Europe so urban nomads like himself could find temporary places to park their homes in schools (during the summer), parks (in winter), abandoned lots, etc. He sees it as a win win for cities eager to keep eyes on the street in isolated or temporarily unused parts of town. aVOID Tiny House on Tour - 8000 km from Berlin to Rome: http://www.leonardodichiara.it/avoidontour/ Leonardo’s tiny-living on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/leonardo.di.chiara/ Migratory Neighborhoods and other news (Leonardo is currently collecting information from those interested in joining him): https://www.facebook.com/avoidtinyhouse/ Leonardo's collaborators: DMM (metal covering and kitchen top), Makte (wood), Häfele (furniture hardware), iGuzzini (lights), Bosch (battery and home appliances), Omar (trailer), Giommi (windows making), Schüco (windows products), Gessi (taps and sink), BTicino (electric plugs), Noctis (mattress and pillows), Mottura (curtains), FG Arredamenti (carpenter for interior), Subissati (wooden structure), Faber (induction stove and kitchen hood), Legnotech (structure construction), ICA (bio paintings), Ambivalent (foldable chairs), G.R. If you don't like the idea of climbing into a loft to go to bed, this may be the tiny house design for you. At only 24ft, it's amazing what this family have managed to fit into this home. One of the most unique features about this home is the bedrooms, with two available loft areas, this home also has a master bedroom which is located downstairs. This tiny house on wheels has everything a young family needs, including full-sized kitchen appliances and even a washer /dryer unit. Best of all, owning the home debt free allows this trio to focus on the things that really matter in life! Situated in Toronto’s sought-after Birch Cliff neighbourhood, welcome to 6B Queensbury Avenue, a showcase of modern design both inside and out. This stunning home features an interlock driveway and pot lights illuminating the covered front entry, inviting you into a spacious tiled foyer, which steps up to the open concept main level living spaces. Hardwood floors, extra deep baseboards, and high ceilings with pot lighting are found throughout this level, with the dining area having a huge picture window overlooking the tree-lined street. A servery area compliments the visually stunning and equally functional kitchen. Both of these amazing work spaces showcase sleek modern cabinetry with under mount lighting, quartz countertops, and ceramic back splashes; and the kitchen is complete with a breakfast area, ultra high-end stainless steel appliances and range hood as well as a smooth cook top, stainless steel sink, and breakfast seating at the centre island. The incredibly spacious sunken living room is warmed by a cozy gas fireplace with a modern-style mantle, and garden doors open to a large deck and backyard. Located on an oversized lot that is almost 180 ft. deep, this home’s fully fenced backyard offers abundant play, gardening and entertaining space canopied by majestic shade trees. Completing the main level is a well-appointed powder room, while hardwood staircases with glass railings lead to both the upper and lower levels. Gleaming hardwood floors and high ceilings are found throughout the upper level, which features two bedrooms to the left of the landing area - both which have large windows for abundant natural light, and ample closet space. The 5-pc washroom is finished with a beautifully tiled floor and bath area, as well as a modern floating vanity with double basins. Down a side hallway, and through a set of double doors, is a third bedroom with skylights - and then the entry to the master bedroom. This luxurious retreat is complete with a built-in wardrobe; a walkout to its own private balcony overlooking the backyard; and a 5-pc ensuite with heated floors, a free-standing tub, oversized glass shower, and floating vanity with his and her basins. The fully finished lower level has soft, cozy broadloom throughout as well as high ceilings with pot lighting - and offers a bonus room ideal as a fifth bedroom, lots of storage space, a huge family room with a walk-up to the backyard, and a 4-pc washroom. Simply stunning, this home is a short walk to The Toronto Hunt Golf Club, the waterfront, schools, and parks; and is just a short drive to Danforth Avenue and Kingston Road shopping and restaurants, as well as the Beach neighbourhood and its attractions. SUBSCRIBE for daily new ideas and many more others victorian style houses design ideas In the United Kingdom and former British colonies, a# Victorian house generally means any house built during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). During the Industrial Revolution, successive housing booms resulted in the building of many millions of Victorian houses which are now a defining feature of most #British towns and cities. In the UK, #Victorian houses follow a wide range of architectural styles. Starting from the early classicism inherited from Regency architecture, the Italianate style gained influence in the 1820 and 1850s, and the Gothic Revival style became prevalent by the 1880s. Later in the Victorian era, the Queen Anne style and the Arts and Crafts movement increased in influence, resulting in the transition to styles typically seen in Edwardian houses. Victorian houses are also found in many former #British colonies where the style might be adapted to local building materials or customs, for example in Sydney, Australia and Melaka, Malaysia.
