In this video I will be going over 5 scientifically proven ways to boost testosterone levels, but first let’s talk about why your testosterone levels are incredibly important for your general wellbeing: Testosterone is androgen hormone that is crucial for the development of masculine traits within males. Testosterone levels are correlated with: *Increased libido *Increased Muscle Mass + Fat loss *Increased bone density *Decreased chance of depression *Decreased chance of Alzheimers Now let’s go over 5 ways in which you can boost your testosterone levels naturally: 5. Exercise and lift weights Men who exercise frequently are often associated with having higher test levels. Resistance training (using weights) has been noted to be the most effective method for building test levels up in the short term and long term. So if you want to boost your levels make sure you get on a good strength training program that has you doing big compound movements such as squats and deadlifts. For beginners I suggest Strong lifts or even the Starting strength program my Mark Rippletoe. H.I.I.T Cardio which involves repeated bouts of high intensity work is often better for stimulating test levels than slower paced treadmill work. If you are doing some cardio choose to hit a bag or do barbell complexes over the elliptical machine if you want that test boost. 4. Minimize Stress and Cortisol levels Long term stress whether from a boss who won’t give you a break, or unpaid bills can lead to increases in cortisol levels. High cortisol levels are devastating for test levels. Picture your hormones as kind of like a see saw. One of them goes up, the other goes down. You must do all that’s within your power to keep those cortisol levels down. 3. Eat more fat Sounds crazy doesn’t it? You have always been told to keep away from fat yet ‘dietary fat’ plays an important role in optimizing your natural testosterone levels. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that diets with higher amounts of monounsaturated and saturated fats have been shown to increase testosterone levels. There is a point of diminishing returns however, an appropriate level dietary fat for testosterone production should fall somewhere in the ball park of 25-40% of your daily calories. Play around with these numbers to see what works for you. 2. Increase the zinc in your diet The mineral zinc has been known to produce a favourable environment for test production; if your levels are low you might suffer. Zinc can be easily supplemented with pills but for the best result make sure you try get most of your Zinc from real foods. 1. Get more sleep This last one should be a no brainer, make sure you are getting a proper amount of sleep and are not walking around like a zombie. A lack of sleep has been shown to be detrimental to testosterone production. Research at the University of Chicago recorded the sleeping patterns of healthy men and found that the subjects' testosterone levels increased the longer they slept. 7-9 hours was noted to be the best in order to optimize the testosterone response. As such it seemed that any changes on top of this would be minimal. However as I started researching this topic, I discovered that actually there were lots of ways I could potentially improve my testosterone levels, and I created a list of 9 different areas that were actionable that I could immediately implement into my lifestyle. Why Does Libido Crash for Men and Women? How to Increase Testosterone Levels and Estrogen Hormones http://drchristianson.com/blog Hey, Dr. Alan Christianson here, author of the New York Times’ Best Selling Adrenal Reset Diet and I want to talk about female hormones. Complicated stuff, you know, this is one thing where guys do have it easier. We have this andropause drop but it’s a little more straightforward and simple, and fewer ups and downs. So there’s a couple of key players involved, we’ve got estrogens, there’s multiple ones of them, and progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, there’s a lot of minor supporting characters, but those are the big ones that are most relevant. And what happens is the menstruating years change and then they stop, that’s a big transition. Your body’s health is so much a function of regulating hormones and regulating hormones are very interconnected. So the thyroid, the hypothalamus, the pituitary, the adrenals, the ovaries. The main change is with the ovaries but it rocks the whole boat, it affects everything to some extent, and it’s very significant. We define menopause as no menstrual cycles for a calendar year. And for the average woman that’s about 50 years and 3 months. And averages can be misleading. You can be perfectly healthy and go through menopause many years earlier, many years later. If your mom did at a different time, that’s more probable for you also. But not knowing that, 50 years and a few months is the most common time to have your last period. A year after the last period we say a woman is then menopausal, then 5 more years out, we say she’s post-menopausal. Now, coming up on menopause, there’s a timeframe in which these hormones change and the menstrual cycles start to change, but they don’t stop. And we call that perimenopause, and that’s where the first symptoms start to emerge. Classically, all the medical books say mid-40’s, it’s pretty common that it does start by mid-40’s, but there’s a lot of perfectly healthy women to where even late 30’s and early 40’s, they’re seeing some early perimenopausal symptoms. And what are these symptoms? Well, they’re a lot. They can include changes in sleep, changes in weight, we can see hot flashes, night sweats, menstrual cycles can get heavier, premenstrual symptoms like cramping or breast tenderness can get much more pronounced, we can also see migraines coming on unexpectedly, digestive symptoms can shift. There’s a lot of ways in which the gut and the liver are involved with the hormones and their changes. So gut function can change, women can notice just more digestive bloating, more gas, more sensitivities, you can also see immune changes so allergies can pick up, asthma can become more pronounced. So, having said that, it sounds pretty scary, but it doesn’t have to be. And for some women, it’s a very different experience than others. Some, unfortunately, do notice many of those symptoms to a high degree, some barely miss a beat, and it’s pretty different. And why is it that it’s different for some than others? What’s happening is that the ovaries are really winding down, they’re making less and less hormone, and the adrenals are compensating. The adrenals are making a little more to back up. That’s especially true for the estrogens. Now, there’s three main estrogens: there’s estrone, like ONE, so that’s E1; there’s estradiol, like E-IOL, so that’s E2; and there’s estriol, which is E3 like try, like tricycle. And the general process is that the ovaries are mostly making estradiol, or E2, and the adrenals mostly make estrone, or E1. So as the ovaries slow down, the adrenals pick up, and you go from more estradiol to more estrone. Now, when that happens smoothly, you don’t have a lot of symptoms. If that’s not smooth, if the dips in estradiol are not compensated for, or if you make more estrone the same time you’re making more estradiol, and less when you’re making less, that’s when you see all those symptoms. So the healthier your adrenals are is a huge factor. And all the good things like your sleep, your sunlight, your carb cycling, your stress management, minimizing the adrenal stressors like the sugar, the alcohol, the caffeine, those things are all huge to lessening perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms. Get enough calories 2. Consume about 40% of your calories from Fat, preferably saturated. 3. Get yourself quality Coconut oil and make it the main source of dietary fat, acquiring for about 75% of all fat in your diet. 4. Avoid High PUFA foods, such as : Flaxseed Oil Soybean Oil Walnut Oil Grapeseed Oil Most Nuts (Except for Macadamia and Brazil Nuts) 5. Keep your Fiber intake at 25-35 Grams per day, mainly from insoluble fiber. This will help with keeping SHBG in check, proper digestion and estrogen metabolism 6. Get majority of your protein from whole foods. Avoid processed crap. 7. Buckwheat,Quinoa,Millet, Black and Pinto beans are all great sources of protein on a vegan diet. 8. Avoid Soy based fake meats. They are usually full off PUFAs and additives. 9. Hold your carbs at 40% of calories. Use it as a baseline and play around with it depending on your goal and caloric intake. 10. Consume mainly starches to fuel your training, and have good energy levels: White Rice (Not a nutrient dense one but still a great addition to meals as a starchy carb source. Brown Rice is not optimal for DHT though.) All Kinds of potatoes. A great Vitamin C and potassium dense food. (Sweet potatoes not optimal for DHT though) 11. Consume nutrient dense fruits to get good amount of micronutrients and fructose to lower SHBG 12. Get yourself some Vitamin D3 and start supplementing with it. For fixing a deficiency 5000 iu per day for a month will be optimal, continued by a maintenance dose of 2000 iu per day 13. Supplement with Vitamin B12 and Calcium 14. The truth is that all of these legal testosterone supplements that aren't steroids have such a negligible effect that they might as well be considered completely useless and a huge waste of money. By lifting heavy weights and burning body fat you're going to increase your lean body mass which will also improve your testosterone. The most effective way to increase your testosterone while lifting heavy weights is by doing multi-joint movements, performing compound lifts & by working larger muscle groups. For example when you work your legs you're going to get a much larger growth hormone & testosterone release then by working the biceps. So to all the guys that hate working legs you better start doing some heavy squats if you're trying to get your testosterone levels up. High intensity interval training is another way that you could improve your testosterone & burn fat in the process. HIIT is done by exercising at very high intensity bursts followed by lower intensity rest rounds. A simple example of this would be to switch back & forth between a 30-second Sprint & a 15 second speed walk. The next best thing you can do is lower your stress levels. Coconut oil is a great source of saturated fat. Another way to boost your testosterone is to get plenty of sleep. Sleep is absolutely critical for optimal testosterone production especially in the morning. 7-9 hours of sleep is the recommended norm. Next on the list is zinc & vitamin D.
