For better or worse the West has always had an infatuation with Asian culture but it feels like there’s been an uptick in eastern and eastern themed stories for western audiences. And one controversy that seems to follow these controversies is who is cast in them. When telling stories using Asian characters for a western audience, do you cast based on the source material, on the race of the intended audience, or some other factor? The practice of casting characters of color to be played by caucasian actors has come to be called “whitewashing” which both includes and is distinct from “asian erasure.” And that’s what we’re going to talk about today with our friend Kevin Nguyen, editor at GQ.com who has written extensively about the issue. How Hollywood Treats Asian Actors

Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park want equal pay. Cenk Uygur and Brett Erlich, the hosts of The Young Turks, discuss. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://tytnetwork.com/join/ “Hawaii Five-O lost actors Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park after they were reportedly unable to come to an agreement with CBS over a salary increase that would bring them up to the same level as their white coworkers Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan. The network is now defending the negotiations by claiming they offered them quite a lot of money, actually. The Hollywood Reporter shared a statement from CBS that claims there was an offer on the table for “significant salary increases”—which sounds good, but not as a good as “equal pay.” “Daniel and Grace have been important and valued members of Hawaii Five-0 for seven seasons,” CBS said Wednesday in a statement. “We did not want to lose them and tried very hard to keep them with offers for large and significant salary increases. While we could not reach an agreement, we part ways with tremendous respect for their talents on screen, as well as their roles as ambassadors for the show off screen, and with hopes to work with them again in the near future.” Read more here: http://jezebel.com/cbs-claims-it-offered-significant-salary-increases-to-a-1796672951 Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Brett Erlich Cast: Cenk Uygur, Brett Erlich *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. "Crazy Rich Asians" is a landmark movie for one very big reason - it’s the first all-Asian Hollywood film in 25 years. The hope is that similar to "Black Panther," the success of "Crazy Rich Asians" at the box office would pave the way for more opportunities for Asian actors in Hollywood. 10 Famous Actors 'TOO UGLY' for Hollywood

04:43
These 10 celebrities were once told that they were too ugly to make it in showbiz. Subscribe: https://goo.gl/Hnoaw3 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Videos you might like: 10 Famous People Who DON'T SUPPORT Gay Rights https://youtu.be/eRjAc8gbZCU 10 Famous Actors Hollywood Won't Cast Anymore https://youtu.be/bPM3n0TN_60 10 Famous Gold Diggers Who Got Married Only For The MONEY https://youtu.be/P4iTeo5CdRY Description: People can be mean. Really mean. Especially when it comes to judging the appearance of others. Hollywood is known for discovering the most gorgeous, flawless specimens that are anything but unattractive. It’s hard to find any celebrity that doesn’t make you swoon. However, some of the most successful and beautiful Hollywood actors, singers and even models, were once told they weren’t attractive enough to make it in the big leagues. Whether they were told they were too fat, not pretty enough or needed to change almost everything about them, these celebs held strong, didn’t change, and proved their haters wrong. If this list doesn’t blow your mind, we’re not sure what will. Lea Michele is arguably one of Hollywood’s most beautiful celebrities today. With perfect brown hair, striking brown eyes, and a body to die for, the former Glee star is an absolute stunner. But once upon a time, she was advised to get a nose job if she wanted to make it in Hollywood. Ignoring her prospective manager, she has gone on to do great things, her natural nose still intact. And then there’s Chrissy Teigan, whose 7 million Instagram followers get a daily dose of her flawless perfection. But the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, author, and mom, was once thrown out of a Forever 21 photoshoot for being too fat. There are some instances when you just have to laugh at because of the celeb’s insane success. Meryl Streep was told she was too ugly for a role in King Kong, which probably has the producer who told her that kicking himself every day. She is now known as one of the greatest actresses of her generation and has the roles and Oscar nominations to prove it. Mindy Kaling is another celeb who got the last laugh. Before her wildly successful show The Mindy Project was aired, another unnamed network was absolutely horrible to the star. They picked up her sketch comedy show, made her audition for the part, and denied her the role of herself because she wasn’t pretty enough. She thinks of her success with The Mindy Project as good karma, but admits to being devastated at the time. The world of Hollywood can be harsh and unrelenting, but these celebrities prove that you can’t let rejection shut you down. When Reese Witherspoon first stepped foot in LA she was bombarded with “not enoughs” – not tall enough, not pretty enough, and look at her now. Take a look at 10 celebrities who were told they were too ugly for Hollywood. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheTalko Twitter: https://twitter.com/thetalko Instagram: https://instagram.com/the_talko ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.thetalko.com/

Only 3 Asian Actors Have Won An Oscar...Ever

In 1935, Merle Oberon was the first (and last) woman to ever receive a nomination and she didn't even win. Eighty-two years later, Dev Patel brought the number of Asian nominees to a measly 13. How to be a Successful Asian Actor

02:42
Hollywood is a tough place for Asian male actors. Learn how to prepare yourself for the audition process. ----- Song: Wine by SURAN ft Changmo (for non-commercial purpose, no claim on this song) Asian Actors used, in order featured: 1. Godfrey Gao 2. Ludi Lin 3. Simu Liu 4. Ryusuke Kobayashi 5. Yoshi Sudarso 6. Steven Yeun 7. Harry Shum Jr. 8. Gong Yu 9. Peter Adrian Sudarso All the actors are full Asian. They are part of western films, with the exception of Gong Yu - who was included because he's bae. These men are worthy of starring in Hollywood films. Yet they keep getting passed over so often. I have nothing against hapas, only questions as to why this industry has repeated casted hapa men in roles of full Asian men - especially as romantic interests.

The movie ‘Ghost in the Shell’ opens this weekend, but not without controversy. It’s based on a popular Japanese comic. And it’s been accused of ‘white-washing.’ The lead role is played by a white actor, Scarlett Johansson, but there are Asian entertainers in the movie, including Chin Han from Singapore. Misrepresentation in Hollywood | rath weekends

09:46
As a blind filmmaker, I have some feelings towards recent discussions that Hollywood misrepresents disabilities, non-caucasian races, and sexual orientations. I also was in a feature film that gave Asian American actors leading roles in the movie. The director and writer of the film talked in a video about how to go about fighting Hollywood's misrepresentation and lack of leading roles for asian actors. I share my commentary on his video as it relates to actors with disabilities as well. Asian actors underrepresented in Hollywood

This year’s Academy Awards have been overshadowed by controversy over a lack of diversity in the nominees. For the second year in a row, no minorities were nominated in any of the four major acting categories. The issue even inspired the hashtag “#OscarsSoWhite.” Much of the controversy around Hollywood diversity has revolved around the lack of black Oscar nominees. Several prominent black celebrities have even vowed to boycott the event. Asian actors in the western world

04:22
Apart from playing the stereotypical roles, or small roles usually given to Asian actors and actresses, as society evolves we see how some Asian actresses/actors snag roles written for white people. (Think Lucy Liu in Charlie's Angels.) We ask the cast of the Dim Sum Funeral whether it's difficult to break into the acting industry as an Asian artist.

Hollywoods Asian Actor problem spotlighted by #StarringJohnCho

00:53
Hollywood definitely has a diversity problem. Last month, a study from the LGBT media organization GLAAD pointed out that there were fewer LGBT characters of color in film and television. And the Oscars failed to nominate any actors of color for acting awards, prompting the hashtag campaign #OscarsSoWhite. Well, one actor is specifically tired of hearing people say that they just can't "see" Asian American actors in leading romantic or action roles, so he photoshopped actor John Cho into the lead role of posters for several major movies, including the latest Avenger and James Bond films. The actor uses the hashtag #StarringJohnCho to show Hollywood that they can and should have more asian actors in starring roles. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/starring-john-cho-lack-of-roles-for-asians-in-hollywood/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Entertainment using http://wochit.com

Asian Actors | Tim Lounibos | An Asian American Actor Answers Diversity’s Call | Expressive Asians

01:36
After a self-imposed hiatus, Tim Lounibos (http://www.imdb.me/timlounibos) couldn't pick a better time to return to his first love of acting--just as the industry finally embraces diversity. Asian actors like Tim Lounibos are beginning to enjoy the reward of their dedication by landing more roles on Prime Time Television and Streaming Shows, however much more still needs to be accomplished to counter whitewashing and achieve a truly inclusive entertainment industry. Tim's past credits are impressive (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0522020/?ref_=rvi_nm) and he returns as a worthy candidate to help add momentum to this cause. Much was expected of Lounibos when he first entered the biz in the 90's. He was branded as part of an "exciting new breed of Asian American actors with widespread mainstream appeal" and went to work immediately on such shows as Star Trek: The Next Generation, Suddenly Susan, and The Nanny, as well as Recurring Guests on Beverly Hills, 90210, The Practice, JAG and The West Wing. He also starred in the feature film Erotique, which was one of the first US films shot in Hong Kong. Eventually, Tim Lounibos entered what one network executive termed the "tweener stage"--too old to play the young buck, too young to play the dad, so he made the difficult decision to leave Hollywood to provide for his growing family. As fate would have it, Tim's acting would be greatly enhanced as he gained real-life experience running a business and supervising hundreds of employees, all the while striving to be a good husband and father and attaining a newfound sense of groundedness and gravitas. Timing is everything, and with onscreen diversity reflecting the face of society, Tim realized his mixed-race combination of German, Irish, and Asian along with his seemingly unlimited acting range made the timing right to leap back in. So far it has proved to be quite successful as Lounibos has quickly stacked up a new set of credits, booking such shows as A.P. Bio, Criminal Minds, Doubt, The Real O'Neals and The Young and the Restless. He is currently recurring on the fifth season of Amazon Studios' Bosch. Indeed, 2018 holds much promise for this Asian American actor. Making A Difference - 2nd Annual FAC Hollywood Actors Panel, 6/4/16

01:11
By contrast, in a climate where prominent Asian film roles are cast with non-Asian actors, the 2015 - 2016 television season has seen an increase of Asian American roles. Most notably, Filipino American actors in lead and supporting roles seen on primetime television on a weekly basis. In September, 2015, FilAm Creative presented its inaugural Hollywood Actors Panel -- a panel discussion and networking event featuring special guest panelists who represent the craft of acting across the board. The goal is to share valuable insights about the craft and the industry with Filipino and Asian American actors. Hear the panelists discuss about their explorations of the process and profession of acting; their reflections on personal experiences and artistic influences that informed and shaped their careers; their discussions of past and current projects. Get a chance to ask the panelists questions, learn about open opportunities, and build your network. Last year, our industry guest panelists were actor Eugene Cordero, casting director Billy DaMota, actress Tess Paras and talent agent Janet Tscha. This year, we have actor Nico Santos, casting director Dea Vise, talent manager Phil Brock and the returning Tess Paras. The 2nd Annual Hollywood Actors Panel takes place Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 12pm at the Clubhouse in Los Angeles. FREE ADMISSION — but donations welcome! *** SEATING IS LIMITED!!
