The First Principles Method Explained by Elon Musk
Interview by Kevin Rose The benefit of "first principles" thinking? It allows you to innovate in clear leaps, rather than building small improvements onto something that already exists. Musk gives an example of the first automobile. While everyone else was trying to improve horse-drawn carriages, someone looked at the fundamentals of transportation and the combustion engine in order to create a car. Naturally Musk does give one warning about using first principles for innovating however, "it takes a lot more mental energy."

Elon Musk: First Principles
"First principles is a physics way of looking at the world. You boil things down to the most fundamental truths and then reason up from there. (For example) people may say 'battery packs are really expensive and that is the way they will always be'. No, that's pretty dumb. If you apply that reasoning to anything new, you wouldn't ever be able to get to that new thing." - Elon Musk Playlist: https://goo.gl/n8yBJg Source: https://goo.gl/1nwo8Q CONNECT: - If you enjoyed this video, please subscribe to this channel. - AI Podcast: https://lexfridman.com/ai/ - Show your support: https://www.patreon.com/lexfridman - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lexfridman - Twitter: https://twitter.com/lexfridman - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lexfridman - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lexfridman - Slack: https://deep-mit-slack.herokuapp.com

CppCon 2015: Arthur O'Dwyer “Lambdas from First Principles: A Whirlwind Tour of C++"”
http://www.Cppcon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/cppcon/cppcon2015 — Lambdas (even those mysterious generic lambdas) are just syntactic sugar atop constructs that are perfectly understandable when approached from the right direction. We'll start with the implementation of C-style functions, then move to overloading, function templates, non-static member functions, C++11 lambdas, and then demystify C++14 generic ("auto") lambdas. Finally, we'll detour into the implementations of std::function and std::bind to show how they're different from lambdas. — Arthur O'Dwyer worked for many years at Green Hills Software, making the world's most optimizing C and C++ compilers. Now he works at Mixpanel in San Francisco, where he organizes a monthly C++ meetup. — Videos Filmed & Edited by Bash Films: http://www.BashFilms.com

First Principles: Elon Musk's Method of Thinking
Check Out the Book About Elon Musk: https://amzn.to/2DW26wH It's definitely worth the read and offers insights into how Elon became the way he is. My new Website: https://dreamletblue.com/ This video primarily covers First Principles Reasoning/Thinking. For a video that talks more about First Principles click the link below: https://youtu.be/XG89ktQ18S0 After graduating College in 2016, I've accumulated a lot of knowledge from 52 books (as of this video), and now I want to give back. I decided to start with First Principles, because it lays the groundwork for all other concepts that I eventually want to present. As I said in the video, I first discovered this idea while watching Elon Musk in an Interview. After reading about Elon Musk's story in "Elon Musk" by Ashlee Vance, I found that the concept of First Principles is synonymous with who Elon is and that a video I make about First Principles must include him in it. Here are the links: Interview with Elon Musk (start at 22:40): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-s_3b5fRd8 Neil deGrasse Tyson explains why the sun is not a yellow star. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOaaUHUnIz0 Pretty much all other information I learned from books. My new website: https://dreamletblue.com/ In this video, we dive deeper into what First Principles are. My First Video About First Principles Reasoning: https://youtu.be/F5dgivEa_eY Aristotle describes First Principles as "Known by Nature." When we align our understanding with how the world actually operates, we are closer to First Principles and increase our potential. Designing from First Principles
Breakfast with Arup: Tuesday 11th February 2014 Chris Carroll, Director, on Designing from First Principles. Chris explores why we are somewhat constrained by modern day professions & precedent, and that during the time of Archimedes and Da Vinci there were no real boundaries between mathematicians, scientists, astronomers, artists & engineers. Chris goes on to discuss the sheer joy, delight and staggering achievements when working from first principles and designing some of the world’s most stunning buildings.

Front End Center — Webpack from First Principles
Webpack often gets a bad rap in the front end community — plenty of digital ink has been spilled over whether web development is "too complicated", with Webpack taking center stage. But in reality, it's no more complex than the sites we're building with it, and conceptually its role is quite clear. Let's demystify the tool by stripping it back to what it truly is — an ahead-of-time compiler for the browser. Like this video? Sign up for more at https://frontend.center

First Principle Thinking for Success and Innovation | Riddhi Mittal | TEDxNMIMSBangalore
With the world confined in the shackles of mental blocks and restraints, there's a need to push aside the dilemma and dubiety to create new possibilities. Be it the existing system or manifesting new ones, let's widen our solution space. Riddhi Mittal, co-founder Finomena, a fin-tech startup based out of Bangalore, talks about the transformation of the banking system and how first principle thinking can actually help move in that direction. A student at Stanford, the massive gap in access to credit in ourcountry really moved her, and she decided to come back to India and use her product-first, tech-first, data-first (ML and AI) and customer-first thinking to make credit accessible to over 80 crore deprived Indians. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx Riddhi Mittal is one of the co-founders of Finomena - a fin-tech startup based in Bangalore. She first went for a Stanford University undergrad and Masters in Computer Science, and then worked at places like Facebook (built GraphSearch from scratch), Mohr Davidow Ventures ($700 VC fund) and was also the youngest PM on Microsoft HoloLens (leading a team of 8 people). She is driven by the sheer impact sensible technology has the potential of having on millions of people's lives. The massive gap in access to credit in our country really moved her, and she decided to come back to India and use her product-first, tech-first, data-first (ML and AI) and customer-first thinking to make credit accessible to over 80 crore deprived Indians. first principles reasoning
Part 2 in my 3 part series on choosing valuable problems to solve. Reasoning from first principles is a powerful technique for coming to disruptive, highly valuable solutions. It is taught to scientists but often not as used in other fields. As an example, we discuss Elon Musk's analysis of Tesla battery costs and how it led him to design the Gigafactory.

What is FIRST PRINCIPLE? What does FIRST PRINCIPLE mean? FIRST PRINCIPLE meaning & explanation
What is FIRST PRINCIPLE? What does FIRST PRINCIPLE mean? FIRST PRINCIPLE meaning - FIRST PRINCIPLE definition - FIRST PRINCIPLE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ A first principle is a basic, foundational, self-evident proposition or assumption that cannot be deduced from any other proposition or assumption. In philosophy, first principles are taught by Aristotelians and a nuanced version of first principles are referred to as postulates by Kantians. In mathematics, first principles are referred to as axioms and postulates. In physics and other sciences, theoretical work is said to be from first principles, or ab initio, if it starts directly at the level of established science and does not make assumptions such as empirical model and parameter fitting. In a formal logical system, that is, a set of propositions that are consistent with one another, it is probable that some of the statements can be deduced from one another. For example, in the syllogism, "All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; Socrates is mortal" the last claim can be deduced from the first two. A first principle is one that cannot be deduced from any other. The classic example is that of Euclid's geometry; its hundreds of propositions can be deduced from a set of definitions, postulates, and common notions: all three types constitute first principles. In philosophy "first principles" are also commonly referred to as a priori terms and arguments, which are contrasted to a posteriori terms, reasoning or arguments, in that the former are simply assumed and exist prior to the reasoning process and the latter are "posterior" meaning deduced or inferred in the reasoning process. First Principles are generally treated in the realm of philosophy known as epistemology, but are an important factor in any metaphysical speculation. In philosophy "First principles" is often somewhat interchangeable and synonymous with a priori, datum and axiom or axiomatic reasoning/method. Terence Irwin writes: When Aristotle explains in general terms what he tries to do in his philosophical works, he says he is looking for "first principles" (or "origins"; archai): In every systematic inquiry (methodos) where there are first principles, or causes, or elements, knowledge and science result from acquiring knowledge of these; for we think we know something just in case we acquire knowledge of the primary causes, the primary first principles, all the way to the elements. It is clear, then, that in the science of nature as elsewhere, we should try first to determine questions about the first principles. The naturally proper direction of our road is from things better known and clearer to us, to things that are clearer and better known by nature; for the things known to us are not the same as the things known unconditionally (haplôs). Hence it is necessary for us to progress, following this procedure, from the things that are less clear by nature, but clearer to us, towards things that are clearer and better known by nature. (Phys. 184a10–21) The connection between knowledge and first principles is not axiomatic as expressed in Aristotle's account of a first principle (in one sense) as "the first basis from which a thing is known" (Met. 1013a14–15). The search for first principles is not peculiar to philosophy; philosophy shares this aim with biological, meteorological, and historical inquiries, among others. But Aristotle's references to first principles in this opening passage of the Physics and at the start of other philosophical inquiries imply that it is a primary task of philosophy. Profoundly influenced by Euclid, Descartes was a rationalist who invented the foundationalist system of philosophy. He used the method of doubt, now called Cartesian doubt, to systematically doubt everything he could possibly doubt, until he was left with what he saw as purely indubitable truths. Using these self-evident propositions as his axioms, or foundations, he went on to deduce his entire body of knowledge from them. The foundations are also called a priori truths. His most famous proposition is "Je pense, donc je suis." (I think, therefore I am, or Cogito ergo sum)....

Derivative of cos(x) from first principles
Steps to find derivative of cos(x) from first principles Begin by using the formula for differentiation in first principles and substituting cos(x) for the required functions f(x+h) and f(x). From here the derivation requires the knowledge of three identities, namely cos(a+b) = cos(a)cos(b) - sin(a)sin(b) and the sine and cosine limit identities. The rest of the derivation of cos(x) from first principles is done by substitution, factoring and simplifying. Music by Adrian von Ziegler
