Inside Gosha Rubchinskiy’s Post-Soviet Generation

14:57
In this episode of Global Street Style, i-D heads to Russia for exclusive backstage access to Gosha Rubchinskiy’s spring/summer 18 show in St. Petersburg, and to meet the prolific post-1991 generation carving out their own future. This is the first generation of Russian youth to have grown up after the fall of the Soviet Union, and are looking inwards to the Eastern Bloc for inspiration, rather than the wider Western world. With designers like Gosha Rubchinskiy popularising post-Soviet style around the world, we discover what effect the former Soviet Union has had on modern creativity, the impact of this cultural explosion on the rest of the world, and what it is to be young in Russia today. Karl Lagerfeld - fashion designer and icon | DW Documentary

42:26
Karl Lagerfeld - the name stands for much more than just fashion. What makes the fashion icon so successful? Who’s the man behind the sunglasses? Designer, artist, fashion icon, also known as "Kaiser Karl." No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, is as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses will celebrate his 85th birthday - it’s believed. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments are notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld works in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Russian Designers Launch Moscow Fashion Week with Spring Show

01:39
Russian designers Slava Zaitsev and Alena Akhmadulina show their new collections at the start of Russian Fashion Week. Full Story: Veteran Russian designer Slava Zaitsev and famous fashion designer Alena Akhmadulina showed their new collections on Friday at the start of Russian Fashion Week. Walking along a catwalk into a hall packed with guests from Moscow's media, showbiz and fashion worlds, models wore glamorous evening wear teamed with extravagant hats. Zaitsev's autumn/winter 2013 collection was surprisingly full of bright colors, such as yellow and pink. His collection for men was more of a classic style this time, full of standard accessories such as bow-tie and classic shoes. But there were some surprises here too, with some classic suits in soft green, brown and creamy white. Meanwhile, Akhmadulina remained loyal to her classy, smart, and timeless style. [Alena Akhmadulina, Russian Designer]: "We dedicate every one of our collections to a fairytale. This time it's a fairytale called 'Three fur coats'. It's about the Russian North. We will open it up via various images of the Russian North." Akhmadulina's designs were in her traditional "a la russe"-style. Models wore fur coats, wolf and owl-skin patterns, silk mono-colored dresses, Russian scarves and wool beads—working the catwalk to techno-covers of Russian folk songs. Fashion week visitors liked the collections. [Alexander, Fashion Week Visitor]: "It's a great show. It's good that Moscow has it. You can see the latest trends and stock up for the next season." Russian Fashion Week aims to showcase new designers from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine over the next few days. "RUSSIAN DOLLS" by Adeline Ziliox // Fashion Designer// directed by Jonas B.

03:03
The first video clip "Russian Dolls" from the French Fashion Designer, Adeline Ziliox. Adeline Ziliox, is pleased to present her first video clip "Russian Dolls". Each season since 2007, she conjures a new wardrobe for the urban woman of character, independence, determination and elegance. Although often labeled as “urban chic", Adeline Ziliox’s creations are not limited to a particular style. Her designs are timeless and defy the laws dictated by the fashion industry. The bold mixture of fabrics, the precision in the often ultra-feminine tailoring, the meticulous finishes and the hidden details squarely position her work in the realm of Haute Couture. Creation of very limited editions and unique items confirms her position at the high end of the world of fashion designers. For Adeline Ziliox, everything is conducive to creativity: a picture, a work of art, a sentence, a piece of music, a smell, a feeling, an emotion ... In this collection, Russia and its cultural riches were the starting point of her creative process. She took her inspiration from its architecture, fashion, music, crafts and reinterpreted them through her original vision to create two parallel universes: the first is rough, strong, uncompromising and the other is soft, poetic, straight out of a fantasy dream. A new line of beads comes from the Kwagala Project, an organization dedicated to empowering women victimized by human trafficking and/or the commercial sex trade. Through the Kwagala Project, trafficking survivors in Uganda are enrolled in a design school called Free Thereafter, where they learn the art of bead-making. "Free Thereafter is teaching them something that's viable in their community," Kwagala Project's executive director Kristen Hendricks told HuffPost Style, "but also that we can leverage on our side," meaning it's something women will actually want to buy." I find this to be illuminating. From his music, videos, and films, he has taken it to a whole new level. We compiled J-Timb's TOP 3 Looks of 2013 so far, they are: casual urban wear...a t-shirt with a crisp black and white design, a nice plaid suite, and a tuxedo jacket with texture. CFDA/ Vogue's Fashion Night Out Tom Ford Gave Keynote at CFDA/Vogue's Fashion Night Out "Trust your instincts when it comes to design." Tom Ford could have written those words out on note cards and handed them out to all the attendees at Monday night's CFDA/VogueFashion Fund dinner, where his keynote address was filled with such pithy advice to designersyoung and not so young. Ford's words of wisdom ranged from pragmatic and insightful to amusing and, in true Tom style, a little provocative and even risqué. "If you're ever in talks with a potential investor or financial backer, and they bring in their wife's blouse to show you for inspiration, run," Ford said. "If a potential investor has a wife or daughter who just loves fashion and can't wait to come in and talk to you about the collection, run. If your president or chief executive officer thinks they know the difference between dark burgundy and aubergine, fire them. My point is, if your brand is to have a strong identity, it must come from you." Let's take a look at some of the luminaries in attendance, shall we? In attendance were: Oscar De La Renta, Anna Wintour, Zac Posen And Sarah and Kate Mulleavy. Iya Yots and Polina Raudson were among those presenting their collection on Sunday. The organizers claim that the Fashion Week is the largest fashion show in Eastern Europe. Businessman Andrey Makov told AP that it is a chance to see "how our fashion industry is moving in relation to the European fashion." And, it is very difficult to say when the industry itself will be in place because it fully depends on the investments. When there are true investments into production then there will be an industry. Until there is some, it is too early to speak about an industry. For now, it is only possible to say that there are designers and that Russian fashion is starting to arise." April 12, 2002 28. various of Nina Donis collection presentation STORYLINE: FLEDGLING RUSSIAN FASHION INDUSTRY SHOWS WHAT IT'S MADE OF Russian designers have been showing their winter 2003 collections in Moscow, in the hope the domestic market will finally make room for homegrown talent. Over the last ten years, Western fashions have had a growing influence on the Russian market. World famous designers have boutiques in Moscow, including Vivienne Westwood, Yamomoto and Les Copains. And as most Russian fashion followers are unwilling to buy from domestic designers, and it is rare for a Russian name to appear among the internationally renowned brands on sale here. Russian pret-a-porter week, which took place in Moscow between the 9th and the 13th of April, proves a fledgling Russian fashion industry does exist. But, it is very weak, undeveloped and poorly financed. Nina and Doris were among the young designers showing their collections. Even though they are known among other Russian designers, they are struggling to sell in their home country, and are skeptical about their future prospects. Like many other Russian designers unable to find recognition at home, Nina and Donis mainly rely on exporting to the West. It is easier to sell there as people are not scared to wear clothes created by less well known designers. As they make their mark in the West, they become more accepted in Russia. RUSSIA FASHION WEEK

Russian designers launch Moscow Fashion Week with spring show Veteran Russian designer Slava Zaitsev and famous fashion designer Alena Akhmadulina showed their new collections on Friday (March 29) at the start of Russian fashion Week. Walking along a catwalk into a hall packed with guests from Moscow's media, showbiz and fashion worlds, models wore glamorous evening wear teamed with extravagant hats. Zaitsev's autumn/winter 2013 collection was surprisingly full of bright colours such as yellow and pink. His collection for men was more of a classic style this time, full of standard accessories such as bow-tie and classic shoes. But there were some surprises here too as some of the classic suits were done in soft green, brown and creamy white colours. Meanwhile, Akhmadullina remained loyal to her classy, smart, and timeless style. "We dedicate every one of our collections to a fairytale," Akhmadulina said before the show. "This time it's a fairytale called Three fur coats, it's about the Russian North. We will open it up via various images of the Russian North." She also said that the pret-a-porter was not established in Russia, but noted that the situation has been changing as the Russian government has been more supportive of the industry lately. "I know that an order has been given and the Russian government pays huge attention to consumer goods manufacturing and it will support and develop it in those directions where designers can't help themselves," she added. "It is possible some designers' centres with wide a range of specialists and full cycle manufacturing will be created in Moscow. This will definitely help designers to cover up some of the gaps." Akhmadulina's designs were done in her traditional "a la russe"-style. Models were wearing fur coats, wolf and owl-skin patterns, silk mono-coloured dresses, Russian scarves and wool beads, trotting the catwalk to techno-covers of Russian folk songs. Fashion week visitors said they liked the collections presented by both designers, adding that having such an event in Moscow was quite good in itself. "It's a great show. It's good that Moscow has it. You can see the latest trends and stock up for the next season," Fashion week visitor Alexander said. Another visitor, Nastia, said: "It's cool. This is already not our first time. We saw the last few shows. We come here regularly. It's cool. Fashion is always cool." Russian Fashion Week aims to showcase new designers from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine over the next few days.
