Google has lost its billion dollar legal fight with Oracle, but everybody will pay the price
Google is on the hook for billions of dollars in damages after a federal appeals court decided that it violated Oracle’s copyright by using Java code in its Android operating system. The case has been sent down to a lower-level court for damages to be calculated but if Oracle gets its way, Google will be paying several billion dollars in damages. More worryingly, however, the lawsuit sets a strict precedent on the use of application program interfaces (APIs) in coding. The tech community has been divided over the case, but critics are warning that a harsh verdict against Google will have a chilling effect on the speed of innovation in software. APIs are pre-written chunks of code that provide a common framework for performing an action across all different types of devices. Oracle, the owner of Sun Microsystems, which first developed the Java language in the 1990s, has its own set of APIs for its own proprietary Java implementation, Java Standard Edition. Google’s Android operating system is written in a different (but very similar) implementation of Java, and it has its own APIs. The lawsuit centers around whether Google’s APIs, which are technically different but functionally identical to Oracle’s, breach the copyright. Unfortunately for Google, the Federal Circuit court ruled in 2014, that APIs are copyrightable, a decision that set the stage for Oracle’s win in court today. Google was trying to argue that its use of Oracle’s APIs were “fair use,” as Oracle allows for non-commercial use, or for its software to be used in the development of other applications. What it doesn’t allow for is its technology to be embedded into a competing platform, which is what the Android operating system is. “The fact that Android is free of charge does not make Google’s use of the Java API packages noncommercial,” the Federal Circuit ruling said, noting also that Google collects significant advertising revenue from Android. Mozilla, the developer of Firefox, filed an amicus brief siding with Google in the case. “In order for open source to thrive, programmers need to reuse and reimplement existing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) – the technical standards according to which computer programs interoperate with each other. Without such interoperability, open source programs lose much of their value as creative and competitive alternatives to proprietary – or “closed source” – programs. By making the information needed for interoperability available to all and thereby making the choice to switch software both cost-effective and frictionless, APIs ensure that consumers have open source alternatives to proprietary software,” the company said.

What is EMBEDDED ANALYTICS? What does EMBEDDED ANALYTICS mean? EMBEDDED ANALYTICS meaning - EMBEDDED ANALYTICS definition - EMBEDDED ANALYTICS explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Embedded analytics is the technology designed to make data analysis and business intelligence more accessible by all kinds of application or user. According to Gartner analysts Kurt Schlegel, traditional business intelligence were suffering in 2008 a lack of integration between the data and the business users. This technology intention is to be more pervasive by real-time autonomy and self-service of data visualization or customization, meanwhile decision makers, business users or even customers are doing their own daily workflow and tasks. First mentions of the concept were made by Howard Dresner, consultant, author, former Gartner analyst and inventor of the term "business intelligence". Consolidation of business intelligence "doesn't mean the BI market has reached maturity" said Howard Dresner while he was working for Hyperion Solutions, a company that Oracle bought in 2007. Oracle started then to use the term "embedded analytics" at their press release for Oracle® Rapid Planning on 2009. Gartner Group, a company for which Howard Dresner has been working, finally added the term to their IT Glossary on November 5, 2012. . It was clear this was a mainstream technology when Dresner Advisory Services published the 2014 Embedded Business Intelligence Market Study as part of the Wisdom of Crowds® Series of Research, including 24 vendors.

Internet of Things [2/5]: Embedded Devices
So what are the "Things" in the Internet of Things? At Micrium, we define a Thing as an embedded device, one that transmits and receives information over a network. So what's an embedded device? Embedded devices are based on microcontrollers, and run software with a small memory footprint. Some Linux and Android-based systems can also be described as embedded systems. However, these general-purpose operating systems usually require an application processor, and have additional capabilities such as dynamic application loading. This is why microcontroller-based embedded systems are often described as deeply embedded systems. For us at Micrium, these deeply embedded systems are the Things in the Internet of Things. Embedded devices often use 16-bit or even 8-bit microcontrollers. But chips that feature 32-bit architectures have dropped in price over the last several years, and are becoming common in embedded systems. The greater capabilities of 32-bit chips present new choices for developers. And a real-time operating system is now the preferred option, allowing for more flexible and extensible software to run on these systems. A complete RTOS – with a kernel, a user interface, a file system, USB support, networking, and more – can fit in a memory space of less than one megabyte. With an RTOS, the software architecture of an embedded system can be more flexible. Troubleshooting and adding new features becomes dramatically simplified. It is also simpler to perform firmware upgrades. In short, it just makes sense to use an RTOS with a 32-bit processor. So which processor architecture should you choose? To date, the main contenders are Intel and ARM. Now, it’s commonly believed that IoT hardware should always be low-cost, so that we can flood the planet with IoT devices. Some people forecast an IP address for every light bulb. But in fact, low-cost is not the solution for every application, especially when IP networking is concerned. So which MCU makes a good starting point? For an ARM processor in the IoT device, the Cortex-M0 is perfect. For gateways, the ARM Cortex-M3, M4 or Cortex-A are all good choices because of their greater processing capabilities. For non-ARM processors, a good option for the IoT device is the Renesas RL78 or RX100 series. And for the gateway, the Renesas RX600 or RZ series. Either way, new processors with more flash memory and more RAM appear on the market regularly, and always at a lower cost. The programming languages used in deeply embedded systems include C, C++ and sometimes Java. So, your choice is not between C or Java; it is whether you will use C and Java. Java is attractive for IoT devices because of the huge number of Java developers worldwide. But the resource requirements for a Java engine are not negligible. Oracle’s Java ME Embedded is designed for small devices. And Oracle recommends up to 700 Kilobytes of RAM and up to 2 megabytes of flash memory in the device for Java alone, plus support for a network connection. These numbers don’t meet Micrum’s definition of a deeply embedded device. And when you factor in the embedded kernel and the communication stack, it pushes the total into megabytes of ROM and RAM. Clearly, Java’s role in IoT devices will be limited to more capable and expensive systems. When cost is not an issue, you can pick a single powerful processor to run all the tasks required of your device. However, a common engineering compromise is to use two processors in the device. One low-cost processor is used for the physical-world interface, like a sensor. This would be an 8 or 16-bit chip. And a second 32-bit processor runs the network interface. This second processor is often placed in a separate module, one that can be certified separately for standards compliance. And that module can then be used in multiple products. When two processors are used, a real-time kernel is not strictly required for the sensor or actuator. However, an RTOS is strongly recommended for the communication module. So in our next video, we will look at how your device will connect to the Internet.

OSS License Compliance for Software Developers, NOT for Legal Experts - Satoru Ueda, Sony
OSS License Compliance for Software Developers, NOT for Legal Experts - Satoru Ueda, Sony Corporation Dealing appropriately with the OSS License is an essential issue using open source software. In this session, we would like to consider the most important things which are always forgotten especially for actual software developers. To be consulted by attorney or legal department staff? Of course it is important. However we mustn’t forget the existence of the engineers who are not supported by those legal experts. And there are some pitfalls which legal experts are always fall into. The role of the software developers who to use OSS are enormously important. Don’t be afraid! It is not so difficult for the software developers to perform the role. About Satoru Ueda From early 2003, Satoru Ueda has been engaged in a project to widely use Linux for consumer electronics appliances and IoT devices. In the project he has been supporting to establish and enhance collaborative relationship between the community and the embedded system developers. As from 2012 to 2017, he participates in the Keio university Leading Graduate School program as the Project Professor (in charged for education) and considering the value of open community for the innovation. The challenge to harmonize with community and many Consumer Electronics products related companies is based upon his past experience of product planning and marketing for UNIX workstation and research of ecology of independent film making community.

java tutorial
Java is a set of computer software and specifications developed by Sun Microsystems, later acquired by Oracle Corporation, that provides a system for developing application software and deploying it in a cross-platform computing environment. Java is used in a wide variety of computing platforms from embedded devices and mobile phones to enterprise servers and supercomputers. While less common, Java applets run in secure, sandboxed environments to provide many features of native applications and can be embedded in HTML pages. Writing in the Java programming language is the primary way to produce code that will be deployed as byte code in a Java Virtual Machine (JVM); byte code compilers are also available for other languages, including Ada, JavaScript, Python, and Ruby. In addition, several languages have been designed to run natively on the JVM, including Scala, Clojure and Groovy. Java syntax borrows heavily from C and C++, but object-oriented features are modeled after Smalltalk and Objective-C.[11] Java eschews certain low-level constructs such as pointers and has a very simple memory model where every object is allocated on the heap and all variables of object types are references. Memory management is handled through integrated automatic garbage collection performed by the JVM. On November 13, 2006, Sun Microsystems made the bulk of its implementation of Java available under the GNU General Public License (GPL).[12][13] The latest version is Java 8, the only supported version in 2015. thi

PLSQL SUBPROGRAM ENGLISH TUTORIAL 2. I PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope. ERP Systems Were Not Designed for Software and Digital Goods -- the Need for Entitlement Management
Cris Wendt, Principal Strategy Consultant at Flexera Software, discusses the importance of entitlement management business processes in managing customer interactions with digital goods such as software. Cris details how traditional ERP implementations are optimized to manage the build and delivery of physical goods, whereas purpose-built entitlement management systems are optimized to manage recurring revenue associated with software, including the activation, replenishment of software licenses, etc. Cris specifically notes that customers looking to migrate from Oracle 11 to 12 are in a particularly opportune time to ensure they have the right business processes to manage their software businesses.
