Translation vs Interpretation
This keynote presentation explains the difference between translation and interpretation.
What is LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION? What does LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION mean? LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION meaning - LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION definition - LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Interpretation or interpreting is oral translation of speech or sign from a language into another. Translation studies is the systematic study of the theory, description and application of interpretation and translation. An interpreter is a person who converts a thought or expression in a source language into an expression with a comparable meaning in a target language either simultaneously in "real time" or consecutively when the speaker pauses after completing one or two sentences. The interpreter's objective is to convey every semantic element as well as tone and register and every intention and feeling of the message that the source-language speaker is directing to target-language recipients (except in summary interpretation, used sometimes in conferences) For written speeches and lectures, sometimes the reading of pre-translated texts is used. The terms interpretation and translation are commonly used interchangeably but are not synonymous. Interpretation describes immediate conversion of source (oral or text) orally (or by sign language), whereas translation is the conversion of source (recorded oral, sign or text) to text. The primary practical distinction is that, in translation, the translator has more time to consider the output and may access resources (dictionaries, glossaries, etc.) in that process. These ought not to be confused with transliteration which, in contrast, seeks to render the sound of one language into the script or form of another with no attendant interpretation or translation of meaning, e.g. a spoken Chinese dialect written using alphabetic characters or spoken English represented in a signed form of English, Signed Exact English, not ASL. In a legal context, such as court interpretation, where ramifications of misinterpretation may be dire, accuracy is paramount. Teams of two or more interpreters, with one actively interpreting and the second monitoring for greater accuracy, may be deployed. Translators have time to consider and revise each word and sentence before delivering their product to the client. While live interpretation's goal is to achieve total accuracy at all times, details of the original (source) speech can be missed and interpreters can ask for clarification from the speaker. In any language, including sign languages, when a word is used for which there is no exact match, expansion may be necessary in order to fully interpret the intended meaning of the word.

This week I'm going to talk about the difference between translators and interpreters. It’s a common misconception that translators and interpreters do the same thing. So, I just like to highlight a few similarities and differences between the two. Firstly, translation refers to written communication whereas interpreting refers to verbal communication. So, for example, a translator will not attend a court hearing to verbally translate between the parties involved. But would translate the written evidence used in the case. Secondly, both jobs require different skills. I translate to require the ability to write well and comprehensively into a target language. This means that they need to have an excellent command of their native language. For example, although I can speak French to a good standard. I cannot translate from English to French although I could translate from French to English, which means I’m only half way there to being an international player. An interpreter needs to be able to speak both languages proficiently. Thirdly, the qualifications and experience required to become either a professional translator or interpreter do differ. Both roles acquire years of training, the resulting qualification. But what they can learn from the training Will be completely different. So just to be clear translators will translate written texts and interpreters will translate a verbal communication.

How video interpretation works
This video shows how easy it is for health-care providers to access video interpretation services. It’s critical for injured workers to communicate effectively with their doctors and vocational providers. Video interpreting is an innovative service that can make a real difference for workers who may not speak English well. With video interpretation, health-care and vocational providers can quickly access all the top languages without advance notice. In addition, because video interpreters can see body language and facial expressions, the interpretation is almost as effective as in-person. For open claims with Labor & Industries, interpreting for an injured worker or a crime victim is a covered service that doesn’t have to be approved in advance. Video interpretation is also available to clients of L&I’s Crime Victims Compensation Program. More information is available at http://www.Lni.wa.gov/interpreters.

Bizline - Ep34C03 Translation and interpretation technology evolves with ICT
Subscribe:http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangtoday Thanks to a development in translation and interpretation technology, people can now talk to foreigners in real time even if they don't speak the languages. Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, or ETRI, has developed a real time automatic interpretation application 'Genie Talk' which recognizes voice and shows texts in a foreign language translated via the central server and communication. Genie Talk's automatic translation quality is the world's top level, more than 15% better than Google translation. Genie Talk is slated to add translation services for eight more languages, including Chinese, Russian and German, by the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, ETRI has also developed a multilanguage broadcasting service technology for multicultural families. Several foreigners watching the same TV can choose the language using the multilanguage service icon on TV screen. By putting on the ear phones connected to smartphones, they can listen to voices in their native language. Support for all the languages in the world will also be possible when a content is made in the future. We introduce you the translation and interpretation service evolving day by day with ICT technologies.
