Whether it’s EDH / Commander, standard or modern, duel or multiplayer, we can’t get enough of it. Our vision of MTG is a game which encourages strategic thinking, social interaction and above all…fun! To make this accessible to everyone we decided to lower the two largest barriers which people encounter with this game: 1: Cost of building a Magic deck. 2: Complexity of building a Magic deck. Our mission at Budget MTG Decks is to provide full deck tech videos describing ready to play EDH / Commander and duel decks. With in depth commentary on each card and overall play style. To make sure the decks are truly budget we have limited the price of all our cards to under a dollar (with exception of the commanders). Now everyone can join the Magic: the Gathering fun!

Keeping track of your life total, as well as the life total of your opponent, is a critically important task for Magic: The Gathering. So too is tracking power and toughness changes to any creatures under your control, as well as counters that may be placed on those creatures, or tokens put into play by spells you control. In order to facilitate this, there are many Magic: The Gathering life pads, tokens, counters and dice offered by many different companies. This video will examine some of the accessories from Turn 1 Games, the made for Magic Tarmogoyf Power/Toughness dice from both Chimera Craft and Tiny Tokens, as well as the LifeCalc from Legion. Which of these are high quality, which are low, which are needed and which aren’t? Let’s take a look! You need these to indicate when your creatures gain +1+1 counters, or your planeswalkers change loyalty totals, or even as creature tokens. Don’t be that player who needs to put +1/+1 counters on their creature but has no way to indicate this. #5 - Use bath beads. Bath beads are cheap, pretty, and usually available at your local 0.99 cent or equivalent store. For about $1.00 you can get all the counters you’ll ever need. Use counters or dice for upkeep effects. Let’s say I have a Thassa in play… Never attack without first saying, move to declare attackers. This makes it very clear to your opponent that this is their last chance to cast any pre-combat spells. If you move to declare attacks and they decline to cast any spells or effects, then they can’t make you go back to let them do so after they see what you are attacking with. Long known for denying their opponents key resources and creatures, Control players can be seen as cruel and unyielding, always saying “No” and never relenting. However, there can be times when saying “yes” is as important as saying “no”, and knowing when to do that is one of the many topics we’ll cover in today’s lesson. We’ll be looking at common mistakes that Control players make, evaluating cards and situations, and how to handle match-ups against the other archetypes. Time benefits the Control player, and the best players use that time to disrupt their opponent’s threats while making their own unanswerable. Since Control is reactive by nature, knowing when and what to react to is key in making sure your strategy isn’t sabotaged. Control is *not* about reacting for the sake of reacting, or providing an answer. If you do decide to counter a creature or a spell, it must done with purpose and with a specific goal in mind - your endgame. Knowing this can help you determine which cards you’d like to counter, and which you’d like to resolve.

That’s because we’re adept at recognizing patterns, not just in how things look, but how they interact with one another. In Magic, we often see recurring themes and patterns in how certain decks play out, and how they interact not just with your opponent, but the board state as well. We call these archetypes, because we see them come up in almost every format again and again like an old friend, or in some cases, an old nemesis. By labeling these different deck archetypes, we can understand what a deck is trying to do just by hearing the name of it. If I say “Red Deck Wins”, you know this deck is focused on a Aggro strategy, has no Control elements, and uses cards like lightning bolt and goblin guide. It immediately tells you what the deck is trying to do, and how going about it. In this episode, we’ll be exploring the three primary types of deck archetypes we see in Magic: The Gathering: Aggro, Control and Combo. We’ll talk about their strengths, their weaknesses, and how to evaluate cards to build these archetypes in both Limited and Constructed. Which of these archetypes should I play? This depends on the format, and also on the timing. If you’re looking for a good win rate, the best time to play an Aggro strategy is usually right after a set comes out in Standard. Because the format is still being in some ways “figured out”, being proactive and focusing on just killing your opponent is an effective way of getting those early wins. Once a format becomes more defined, it’s easier to build a Control deck to beat what other people are doing, which is usually at the end before the next set is released, or before rotation. Combo is sprinkled throughout the lifespan of a format sometimes, when and if there is a good busted combo in a Control deck. If people are playing a lot of Aggro decks, then it’s a good time to do one of those Engine decks, as long as it’s fast and can kill by turn 5 if there isn’t interaction. But honestly, the real answer to this question is: any of them you want! What is amazing about Magic: the Gathering as a game is its flexibility. You can express yourself through gameplay in almost any way you might wish. I love my Modern Merfolk deck, and no matter how it’s doing in the meta, I’ll continue to play it, regardless of what other people think. For you that might be your Cat tribal Standard deck, your Burn deck, or even 8 Rack. Whatever you choose, follow your bliss and fine tune it to the best of your ability. Different people play Magic differently, and in that lies the inherent beauty and freedom of the game. That’s why This video will compare and contrast the Tarmo-die from StarCity games, monster rocks from newport games, the zinc spin downs from kakapopo and the oracle inserts from oracle. which have true purpose and function and which are little more than empty fluff? Let’s take a look. Let’s begin with monster rocks from newport games. Sold in sets of 12, monster rocks are 6 sided die meant to represent magic the gathering creature tokens. On each side is both a creature emblem as well as numerical power/toughness from 1-6, in other words one side is a 1/1, another a 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5 and 6/6. This allows one d6 to act as one of 6 potential tokens you might utilyze during gameplay. Since these are essentially numbered 1-6, they can still be used to roll as a traditional D6. Because of the emblem and power/toughness marking, it is easier to indicate when a die is tapped than, say with just a regular d6. Being able to use one die for 6 potential tokens is also advantageous in terms of size and storage. Where do these fall on the function versus fluff scale? I’d say somewhat more towards function than just fluff. Yes, they look nice, can be seen as adding style to your gameplay, and of course there is always the reasonable argument of just using actual tokens during gameplay. But there’s a real function here as well, letting a handful of compact d6’s represent a host of potential creatures makes for both saving space and multi purpose. Anyone playing a massive token deck who has had to dig endlessly for the 5/5 when they have only 1/1 and 2/2 tokens in front of them can see the appeal. Each order contains 12 great looking 6 sided die Can be rolled as a normal D6 by using 1/1 as 1 and so on Fun way to represent tokens in games like Magic the Gathering Comes with dice cube Cost is 11.99 for 12. Grade: solid B. Next up from Kakapopo are designer dice, or more specifically, designer spindown dice.
Retro MTG Reviews - Reaper Scrye Pewter Life Counter from 1994! Magic: The Gathering

Playmats! - http://www.tolariancommunitycollege.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TolarianCollege FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/TolarianCommunityCollege Back in the glorious year of 1994, a company by the name of Reaper Miniatures, probably best known today for their Dungeons & Dragons pewter figurines, teamed up with the magazine Scrye and released a short lived but long remembered product for players of Magic: The Gathering. What was it they offered players of the MTG card game? Only one of the finest ways to keep track of your life total, the Reaper Scrye Life Counter. Originally released in 1994, these are very hard to come by these days, especially unused such as I am showing you here. The ones I am showing you here were exceptionally hard to come by, because here they are in their official boxes; the later releases were on blister cards. Crafted not of cardboard or plastic, but of actual pewter and a finer quality than perhaps anything you’ll find on the market today. These were made in each of the five mana colors, green, blue, white, black and red, as well as limited editions in bronze, silver and gold...yes they actually plated that rarest tier with 14 karrot gold. On each stands a wizards holding a crystal ball, and at his base is an arrow that points to your life total. One side can track from 1-20 life, and, in the event of going above 20 life… The dial can be flipped over to track from 21-40 life. Amazing how a product from 2 decades ago could be used and enjoyed by commander players today. The quality here is exceptional. Reaper knew how to just to make a solid product, and not just a highly functional one, but also a artistic and detailed one as well. Sadly, although many elderly players such as myself remember these from that distant, distant era of the mid-90’s, Reaper long since discontinued this product and, at least currently, has not given any indication that it shall return. Although maybe if we all ask them really, really nicely. Oh, wait...what’s this? It seems that classic design is alive again after all...not from Reaper, however, but instead from Ultra Pro. Yeah, you heard me, Ultra Pro. Cool, let’s compare. One can’t help but think of the Reaper Scrye counter as they examine the Ultra Pro Realms of Havoc life counter. Three designs are available, and this is crafted of actual...well, it isn’t cardboard or plastic, so that’s a plus. This is actually very solid, the packaging lists this as “Heavy Metal Material” so i doubt it is pewter. Just like the reaper scrye counter, the base contains an arrow to point to life total, and the bottom disk can flip for tracking between 1 and 40 life. My only criticism of the Ultra Pro version, other than of course not being crafted of a fine material such as pewter, is that it is only a limited collector’s edition. I hope very much Ultra Pro and other companies recognize that quality items such as this can be and are desired by a growing and maturing player base. Maybe we can return, step by step to that bygone era where our products were crafted with greater care and artistry. Until that time, I am going to enjoy my old Scrye Counter, and yeah, this Ultra Pro limited edition one as well! I hope this retro review has been of some interest to you. Your local game store holds Magic: The Gathering events from Friday Night Magic to the Standard Showdown to other in store events throughout the week. For new and returning players, attending these events has often been difficult, as booster packs are designed with the draft format in mind and not constructed, thus buying tons of booster packs to crack in order to build a competitive Friday Night Magic standard deck has never been an easy, affordable or even successful strategy. The only alternative, however, has been downloading decklists and buying singles to build a complete deck from scratch. An expensive option considering Standard decks usually run in the hundreds of dollars, if not more. Challenger Decks seek to offer what has never before been done: a self-contained, preconstructed standard deck which can be bought at an affordable price and played effectively and competitively at Friday Night Magic or other in store events, right out of the box. At an MSRP of 29.99, these challenger decks would need to offer quite a lot to new and returning players interested in them. Do they rise to the challenge? Let’s take a look! Now, For The Record, Wizards has attempted products like this before, most notably with the long running product line of Event Decks. But, as my own reviews cover if you are curious on the details, Event Decks were almost always terrible right out of the box, technically playable at FNM but not something that put up much of, if any of a fight. A new or returning player using an event deck would likely end up in last place, and many times did not even have a framework from which to build a competitive deck. Event Decks were jank, containing 1-2 copies of largely unplayed cards, never mythics and never value. Now, one criticism many of my videos have had in the past is an over emphasis on the importance of financial value in products such as these. My answer to that is simple: when products of the past such as Event Decks were so terrible, so unplayable at an event, so failing in the very thing they were designed to do, then all there is left to look at is financial value. In the case of challenger decks, everyone is talking about financial value because these contain mythics, and playsets and playsets of mythics, but for me, i don’t care. I do not care one bit about whether the sum total of the individual cards within these 29.99 decks are worth 60, 80 or even 10 dollars each. I will still look at financial value, but what matters here is the degree to which these are playable out of the box at Friday Night Magic.

Magic The Gathering Life Counter

02:26
I re-purposed a old project of mine (an Arduino based reaction timer) in to a game box for magic the gathering. It has a player selector (random, as if you were flipping a coin) and the basic life counters. I might make something else out of it later, but right now I think it looks really nice and will add a little technical flair to your traditional trading card game.

There are times when even the most aggressive strategies will need to stop and consider a particular nuance in the game, or decide on a slightly more subtle tactic. In today’s session, we’ll be taking a look at how to play Aggro at a higher level, examining the common pitfalls many players make and how to avoid them. We’ll look at how to evaluate board states and cards for this archetype, as well as how to play against the other big deck types: Combo and Control. As tempting as the mantra “Always Be Attacking” may be, there are times when holding back for a turn or two, or only partially attacking might actually benefit your goal of dealing the most damage. Let’s go to an example: Let’s say that you’re in the middle of a game, and your opponent currently has two 3/3’s on board. You have three 2/2’s, and two more 2/2’s in your hand. You know you have the mana to play both of them on this turn if you want. But for now, do you choose to attack with all of your creatures? First of all, let’s look at the best blocks our opponent might have in this scenario. If we attack with all of our 2/2’s, our opponent will block two of them with their 3/3’s, killing two of our creatures. Two damage will go through. If we cast our two 2/2’s on our second main phase and our opponent does nothing on their turn, then we’ve set ourselves up for the same scenario again, effectively trading four creatures for four damage. This isn’t a very efficient line of play, so let’s reset and see how we could maximize damage given this situation. Instead of attacking, let’s assume we play our pair of 2/2’s, having a total of five 2/2’s on the battlefield under our control. On our next turn, we attack with all of our creatures. While our opponent’s two blockers are able to kill two of our creatures, we’re still able to get six damage through. Then assuming they don’t play anything on their turn again, we can get in for another two damage if we attack with all of our creatures again. In the same two turns, we’ve doubled the amount of damage we’ve inflicted on our opponent to 8, for the same cost of four creatures. Even though we’ve waited a turn to build up our board, we’ve actually come out ahead against our opponent. As basic as it might sound, analyzing the board state is key in understanding when to play your cards. When we play Aggro wantS to be able to hit our very early, low curve immediately and often, which means we will most likely be playing at most two colors. More than that, and we’ll run into problems if we miss a color or a land drop. For example, Mono Red Burn decks have almost always been a competitive staple in Modern and Legacy and have remained, thanks to its simple, one color land base. While more colors can give us more options, the focused nature of Aggro makes the possible risks less than ideal.
