Management styles

09:25
Management styles are characteristic ways of making decisions and relating to subordinates. Management styles can be categorized into two main contrasting styles, autocratic and permissive. Management styles are also divided in the main categories of autocratic, paternalistic, and democratic. This idea was further developed by Robert Tannenbaum and Warren H. Schmidt (1958, 1973), who argued that the style of leadership is dependent upon the prevailing circumstance; therefore leaders should exercise a range of management styles and should deploy them as appropriate. Leadership Styles - Which Is YOUR Leadership Style?

05:42
Leadership styles video by http://www.GoodAtPeople.com. Which is YOUR style of leadership? Let's face it, most days you feel like a babysitter instead of a boss. Is it possible that changing the way you DEFINE and THINK ABOUT your leadership style can be the key to transforming your style of leadership? This video describes an amazing brain poke called the Pygmalion Effect. Harvard researcher, Robert K. Rosenthal discovered that just by changing a single word that you say inside your own head, you can transform the results that you get from your team. It sounds like magic, but scientists have known about similar "placebo" effects and self-fulfilling prophesies for decades. The thoughts and expectations inside your head can and do start a chain reaction that ultimately results in a transformation of your leadership style. What is Servant Leadership?

02:50
We made this short video to help leaders and colleagues at Barclaycard to learn more about Servant Leadership. Our people loved it so we decided to share it with everyone. Let us know what you think, leave a comment, share your story about leadership in your organisation or team. Enjoy! About Servant Leadership: Servant Leadership is a participative form of leadership that shares some of the characteristics of transformational leadership. It blends a concern for transformation at an organisational level with individualised consideration. It emphasises the need to replace self-interest with service to others as the basis for using power. Servant Leadership is opposed to the command-and-control type of autocratic leadership. There is now a clear consensus among modern management theorists that autocratic leadership needs to be replaced by leadership that empowers workers. In today’s environment, command-and-control leadership no longer works, because leaders must earn people’s respect and trust. For us at Barclaycard, Servant Leadership: - Is about influence rather than power and control - Is about inspiration rather than position and title - Is about focusing on others’ strengths rather than weaknesses - Is about listening rather than giving orders - Is about humility rather than pride, ‘ the big picture rather than self interest - Is about long-range benefits rather than short-term profits - Is about creating new futures rather than maintaining the status quo

Transactional vs. Transformational Leadership Definition

10:00
Transformational Leadership Vs. Transactional Leadership Definition Different managers employ distinctly different management styles, ranging from relatively hands-off, facilitative styles to autocratic, micromanaging styles. Managers can also employ different motivational strategies and techniques to boost employee performance or accomplish internal change. Transformational and transactional leadership are polar opposites when it comes to the underlying theories of management and motivation. Understanding the difference between transformational and transactional leadership is crucial for anyone pursuing a career in management. Visit http://richtopia.com/effective-leadership/transactional-myth for more info. Transactional Leadership Transactional leadership styles are more concerned with maintaining the normal flow of operations. Transactional leadership can be described as "keeping the ship afloat." Transactional leaders use disciplinary power and an array of incentives to motivate employees to perform at their best. The term "transactional" refers to the fact that this type of leader essentially motivates subordinates by exchanging rewards for performance. A transactional leader generally does not look ahead in strategically guiding an organization to a position of market leadership; instead, these managers are solely concerned with making sure everything flows smoothly today. Transformational Leadership A transformational leader goes beyond managing day-to-day operations and crafts strategies for taking his company, department or work team to the next level of performance and success. Transformational leadership styles focus on team-building, motivation and collaboration with employees at different levels of an organization to accomplish change for the better. Transformational leaders set goals and incentives to push their subordinates to higher performance levels, while providing opportunities for personal and professional growth for each employee. Related Reading: Four Elements of Transformational Leadership Advantages Both leadership styles are needed for guiding an organization to success. Transactional leaders provide distinct advantages through their abilities to address small operational details quickly. Transactional leaders handle all the details that come together to build a strong reputation in the marketplace, while keeping employees productive on the front line. Transformational leadership styles are crucial to the strategic development of a small business. Small businesses with transformational leaders at the helm shoot for ambitious goals, and can they achieve rapid success through the vision and team-building skills of the leader. Applications Different management styles are best suited to different situations. When it comes to front-line supervisors of minimum-wage employees, for example, a transactional leadership style can be more effective. Shift supervisors at a fast food restaurant will be much more effective if they are concerned with ensuring all of the various stations run smoothly, rather than spending their time thinking up better ways to serve hamburgers. On the other hand, CEOs or sales managers can be more effective if they are transformational leaders. Executive managers need the ability to design and communicate grand strategic missions, passing the missions down to transactional leaders for implementation of the details. Visit http://richtopia.com/effective-leadership/transactional-myth for more info.

Why good leaders make you feel safe | Simon Sinek

What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests, it's someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. But creating trust and safety — especially in an uneven economy — means taking on big responsibility. Understanding & Leveraging Leadership Styles

09:29
What is your leadership style? Are you a get-it-done type or a caring, relationship builder? Are you touchy feely, go-with-your gut person or a cautious, information gatherer? Are you direct, often interpreted as blunt, or more emotional, viewed as wishy-washy? Knowing your leadership style is important to your success in both your business and personal lives. In business, it enables you to leverage your talent and seek out the right new hires to complement the leadership styles of your current management team. There is no right or wrong style, and the combination you choose for your business can be the 'make or brake' of achieving your goals. Using the DISC profiles, as an example, here are two aspects of leadership styles. Graphed on this chart, we have the two extremes of communication styles -- casual and formal -- plotted against personality types -- extroverted and introverted. Each of the four DISC types is placed in a quadrant. Casual communicators tend to use less formal language, include feelings in the discussion and seem less articulate when speaking. Formal communicators, on the other hand, use fewer words, come across as more direct and always have their i's dotted and t's crossed before weighing in. Likewise, extroverts and introverts have very different styles. Extroverts are the talkers who speak as they process thoughts, while introverts are considered good listeners because they observe more than they verbalize. Dominant styles are more results-based and direct while Supportive types are all about relationships and people. Inspiring leaders are all about the why, often making decisions based on emotions and feelings. Their opposites, Cautious personalities, are all about the information, and often put off making decisions until they have collected enough data. Now let's look at how these characteristics play out in a boardroom... The company's leader is a Dominant, both extroverted and formal. He begins a meeting that was scheduled weeks before but may or may not have told anyone else what the agenda is. In the meeting, he dives straight to the deliverables and action items because spending time on small talk and relationship building is a waste, not to mention annoying. He knows exactly what he wants from everyone and assumes that they do to - telling the team what will happen, not by asking for input or getting buy-in. The Supportive people are quietly feeling uncared for and unloved with their leader's abrupt start. They smile and nod while trying not to let on because they want the best for the leader and the organization, and are ready to contribute. They also secretly wonder if the leader is having a tough time personally and maybe he just needs a hug later. The Cautious people are sitting with their arms crossed and not going to play along because there is no agenda to define the meeting and therefore they are not prepared with meaningful input. They are insulted they weren't asked to weigh in with their expertise and research, but aren't about to put their neck out and look stupid. The Inspiring types are talking about their weekend regardless of the agenda, interrupting the Dominant leader and excited to be out of their cubicle and in a room full of other people! They aren't as concerned about where the company is going as they are in getting there together and the social events that will happen along the way. Sound like your office? Of course, this is an oversimplification of the personality profiling and leadership team design process, but it gives you an understanding of how your leadership style affects your working relationships. If you are interested in delving deeper into this topic more, here are a few books on the topic: * Quiet -- Susan Cain. A must read whether you are an introvert or extrovert * The 4 Dimensional Manager: DISC Strategies for Managing Different People in the Best Ways -- Julie Straw * Crucial Conversations -- Patterson, Grenny, McMillian, Switzler * Working Together: A Personality-Centered Approach to Management, Isachsen, Berens * Drive -- The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink Need someone to walk your executive team through a day on understanding leadership styles?
