What is ADMIRALTY CHART? What does ADMIRALTY CHART mean? ADMIRALTY CHART meaning - ADMIRALTY CHART definition - ADMIRALTY CHART explanation. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Admiralty charts are nautical charts issued by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) and subject to Crown Copyright. Over 3,500 Standard Nautical Charts (SNCs) and 14,000 Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) are available with the Admiralty portfolio offering the widest official coverage of international shipping routes and ports, in varying detail. Admiralty charts have been produced by UKHO for over 200 years, with the primary aim of saving and protecting lives at sea. The core market for these charts includes over 40,000 defence and merchant ships globally. Today, their products are used by over 90% of ships trading internationally. The scale of the charts can vary according to purpose; large-scale charts often cover approaches to harbours, such as Port Approach Guides, medium-scale charts often cover frequently used coastal areas, and small-scale charts are regularly used for navigation in more open areas. A series of small craft charts are also available at even smaller scales. Admiralty charts include information on: depths (chart datum), coastline, buoyage, land and underwater contour lines, seabed composition, hazards, tidal information (indicated by "tidal diamonds"), prominent land features, traffic separation schemes radio direction finding (RDF) information, lights, and other information to assist in navigation. Passage charts at smaller scales use the Mercator projection, so that bearings can be directly transferred between charts, although allowances for magnetic variation and magnetic deviation must be considered for accuracy The straight lines drawn on the Mercator projection represent lines of constant bearing; in reality, these lines are not straight but are segments of a three-dimensional “loxodromic” spiral, or rhumb line. In contrast, coastal charts use the transverse Mercator projection, in order to depict the shape of the shoreline with greater accuracy. Admiralty charts are issued by the UKHO for a variety of users; Standard Nautical Charts (SNCs) are issued to mariners subject to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention , while chart folios, at a convenient A2 size, are produced for leisure users. Alongside its paper charts, UKHO produces an expanding range of digital products to fulfil the impending compulsory carriage requirements of ECDIS/ENCs, as issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The digital range comprises Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) for use with an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), which can be displayed and interrogated through Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS). The range also includes Admiralty Raster Chart Service (ARCS), which allows paper nautical charts to be viewed in raster form on an ECDIS. Due to the changing nature of the seabed and other charted features, chart users’ information must be up-to-date to maintain accuracy and general safety. This is ensured by UKHO through continually assessing hydrographic data for vital safety information, with urgent updates issued via weekly Notices to Mariners (NMs).

Viewing US Nautical Charts on Google Earth

06:55
A slick way to do echart navigation on google earth, as well as viewing all NOAA charts and even a fast way to download the RNC versions. NOTE: WE UPDATED THE LINK BELOW JAN 16, 2018 (thanks to PorcineJim ) Main link at NOAA describing the process https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/data/gis-data-and-services.html#seamless-raster-nautical-chart-services Direct link to the Google Earth file we need https://seamlessrnc.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/rnc/noaa_rncs.kmz ( Note this only works with US charts because they offer free echarts, whereas most other nations do not. Brazil may be an exception, but they do not offer the Google Earth function that i know of. )

Sea charts for coastal navigation

31:53
This video is a basic introduction to sea charts. We will go through how to read depths and bridge heights, plot magnetic and true courses from the compass rose using a parallel ruler and how to measure distance in nautical miles. In particular detail is information on converting from magnetic to true and from true to magnetic. This is on of the fundamental skills required for coastal navigation.

10 reading the nautical charts types and scales

02:01
Here are the different types and scales of charts: Sailing charts, where the scale is 1:500,000 and smaller, are used for offshore navigation beyond sight of land. The general charts have a scale of 1:150,000 - 1:500,000, and give wide-ranging offshore coverage with sufficient inshore detail to make landfall sightings easy. Fisheries charts use these scales. The coastal chart uses a scale of 1:50,000 - 1:150,000, and is used to show uninterrupted wide-ranging coverage with adequate inshore detail to make landfall sightings easy. Fisheries charts also use these scales. The approach chart has a scale of 1:15,000 - 1:50,000, and is used for approaching coasts where great detail is required. Harbour charts, which have a scale is1:5,000 - 1:15,000, are used for navigation in harbors or intricate, hazardous, shoal-infested waters. Bar Scales: a bar scale is a graphic scale represented by a line or a bar that is subdivided into nautical miles, feet, or meters. This bar is used for measuring distances on the chart. Elevation Contours: these are lines connecting points of equal elevation. They are a graphical way of showing the shape and slope of hills and mountains that might be helpful in identifying them on the chart. Once identified, they can help identify your location on the water.
