Product Manager - 10 Essential Skills to Master (In 2019)

06:51
Product Management is a fast-growing and niche area to develop a career in. Naturally, there are some essential skills that can get you to be the very best of the lot. While the need for Product Managers is increasing by the day - in startups, tech companies and other large companies alike - the supply in India is currently only limited to a few thousands and compares poorly to countries such as the US. As per the Google and Accel Partners SAAS Report, there are roughly 36,000 Product Managers in India and the number is expected to increase to about 68,000 Product Managers by 2020. So, the need is apparent. But what does one have to do to get there? How to become a Product Manager? A common misconception is that Product Managers need to only master certain hard skills such as business understanding, tech and data. However, this would only mean the job is half done. To be a successful Product Manager you must have some soft skills too. These include communication, negotiation and leading without authority among many others. But don't worry about backgrounds, as Product Managers have been known to have diverse work and educational experience prior to making the transition into Product Management. Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in this 3rd part of the Careers-In-Shorts Series what these key skills are and how one can ace them to get on the road to being a great Product Manager. Product Management Thinking In 2 Minutes | Solve For X

02:00
Product management is creative problem solving. As soon as you learn how to think about the variables, you can learn how to build something great. And product manager extraordinaire Christian Arca can take you through it in 2 minutes. Product management boils down thinking about the following issues: 1. Customer needs or wants 2. The solution those needs/wants 3. The product value Needs and wants are problems that people have – things they want to do but don’t have the tools to accomplish, or things that could help them do something better than they currently do. Your product is going to step in, like a comic book superheo, and solve that problem. But there are multiple ways to solve for needs. So it’s important to think about the product value: what are the benefits of the feature or product you want to build? Benefits can help you pick which way, or what feature, you choose in order to solve for a customer’s needs If you want to become a product manager for the ages, or want more entrepreneurial tips and tricks, check out One Month’s accelerated learning blog: learn.onemonth.com http://onemonth.com http://twitter.com/onemonthedu http://facebook.com/onemonthedu http://youtube.com/onemonth

UW Certificate in Software Product Management

01:57
Adam Grupp, an instructor for the Certificate in Software Product Management, explains what students gain from the program and how they can apply it to their careers. Learn more here: https://www.pce.uw.edu/certificates/software-product-management Video Transcript: Software product management is really about beginning with a customer and a problem — defining that, developing it and then taking that into a development phase where you identify opportunities to solve that problem that accompany business opportunity. In the program, we start you off with a case where you work with a team all year long to develop that customer problem and the concept for your solution, and from there you work with the team to refine requirements. And by the end of the year, students have worked through the full process of defining an opportunity, developing the solution concept, refining those priorities, and taking it to market. Students come out of this program with a clear sense for what it means to prioritize, to think critically about product and, ultimately, to pivot when things have to change. It's an incredibly challenging thing to do when you're the product manager — the CEO of the product — but you get a chance to practice that here in this program in a safe environment with lots of direct feedback from your instructors and from your classmates. We've seen many of our students use this program as a springboard into a product manager role that they didn't already have or to help reinforce their success as a product manager in a current role. We also have, as instructors, tried to be resources to our students as they graduate and move on and to be a part of their network moving forward to help them identify opportunities and then to be a part of the product manager community here in Seattle. Our alumni of the program work all over the Puget Sound region in a variety of companies: Boeing, Starbucks, Microsoft, Tableau, you name it. What we see is that people come out of this program with a lot more confidence in their abilities, a lot more of the knowhow and the acumen required to be a successful product manager and, frankly, a network of motivated product managers, who come from this same program, who are out there to do cool things and take the world by storm.

Chris Painter gave an overview of what it's like to be a product manager and talked about our part-time product management course curriculum. He also shared secrets on what it takes to become a Product Manager and answered various questions about product management. Chris Painter has spent the past 20 years developing, managing, and launching at scale unique hardware and software experiences in both Japan and the US. He started his career in Japan, joining the team that designed the ThinkPad laptops. He eventually found his way to Sony Japan doing product design on the VAIO laptops. It was at Sony where he was able to get his start in product management and his passion for bringing together hardware and software experiences. He brought that to his own startup which focused on building an online streaming media experience. Though not hugely successful, this ultimately helped to create new experiences at Comcast that became the new Xfinity X1 UI, and ultimately the very successful Amazon FireTV and FireTV stick product experiences. He carried his personal passion for photo and video capture to GoPro where he led a team of product managers developing new ways to capture, manage and share your life’s most memorable moments. Bitten once again by the startup bug, Chris now heads up product at a robotics startup focused on last mile delivery. Now Brian is explaining what he believes are the three secrets to successful Product Management. The first secret is to listen more than you talk. This is difficult to do but if you can learn active listening techniques and really commit to it, you'll be surprised how much you pick up that will help you along the way. The next secret is to be responsible for the whole product. Many Product Managers make the mistake of being too focused on the specific features of the product. They should in stead be concerned with the whole product, the entire experience that a customer has in relation to the product. The third Product Management success secret is life-long learning. Ensure you are always upping your game, continuous learning will reap significant benefits for your product and your career. If you don't continue to grow you won't continue to be successful.
