The Physics of Pool

24:42
The objective of this lesson is to illustrate how a common everyday experience (such as playing pool) can often provide a learning moment. In the example chosen, we use the game of pool to help explain some key concepts of physics. One of these concepts is the conservation of linear momentum since conservation laws play an extremely important role in many aspects of physics. The idea that a certain property of a system is maintained before and after something happens is quite central to many principles in physics and in the pool example, we concentrate on the conservation of linear momentum. The latter half of the video looks at angular momentum and friction, examining why certain objects roll, as opposed to slide. We do this by looking at how striking a ball with a cue stick at different locations produces different effects. Though not required, students who have been exposed to some physics would benefit most from this video. In mathematically rigorous classes, students can concentrate on the details of vectors and conservation of linear momentum. No materials are required for this lesson, and it can be completed easily within a class period. For more information: http://blossoms.mit.edu/videos/lessons/physics_pool

NOTE CONCERNING STANCE: An alternative to bending at the waist or knees to get the head lower in the stance is to widen the feet. For tall people like me, bending at the waist can cause a lot of hamstring, neck and back strain. Widening the feet is a good alternative since it might allow you to keep one or both of your knees locked, which can help stabilize the stance. I have personally experimented a lot with different combinations of widening the feet and bending at the knees, and my best solution was to widen the feet just a little and mostly bend at the knees. My stance is stable, and I have no discomfort whatsoever. When I widen the feet more, to reduce the knee bend, I feel strain and discomfort in my right hamstring and/or ankle. The large knee bend might not be the best approach for all tall people since it does require quadriceps strength and endurance. Also, bent knees are not as stable as a locked knee. Each individual needs to experiment with the stance to determine the most effective and most comfortable way to create proper "vision center" alignment with the head as low as possible. The solution will be different for everybody, especially with tall people.

Controlling Balll With a 90 Degree Angle (Tangent Line)

03:57
http://slctbld.es/twitterchalk - Get Predator Chalk today! Lets admit it; a lot of people have no clue where the cue ball is going to end up after they strike their object ball. What follows will be a technique for how to properly shoot at a 90 degree angle, also known as the Tangent Line. Take a look at the video below for specifications on each shooting situation I mention. First, you need to know where your point of contact is. The point of contact is where you'd have to hit the cue ball on the object ball to make it in the pocket. Once you know where your point of contact is, you can begin to work out this 90 degree technique. Take note of that point of contact. Now you want to line your cue up along that point of contact leading into the pocket. Take your cue and move it 90 degrees (to the left, in this case). Put a piece of chalk right there to provide a visual marker for yourself. When you're just hitting center ball, the ball will bounce off the rail at 90 degree angles. Once you have that technique down, let's try using some English. In this situation, I'll do the same as before and set a piece of chalk as a marker. But I don't want to hit that chalk. I want to hit further up on the rail, so I'll have to put low English on it. The ball will travel at 90 degrees for a moment and then pull away. The same principles apply with high english.

Use One System - Draw Golf Ball and Shoot Pool

02:13
Both golf and pool are played with a round ball, so some of the same aiming systems and principles can be applied. This video will help you make cut shots on the pool table under 30 degrees and allow you to understand the factors at work when you hit a fade or draw on the golf course. When I move the tip of the cue stick right of center of the cue ball, that's the same as aligning your stance right of the flag on the golf course. Same principles at work! Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps your golf and pool games!

Frozen Rail Cut Shots Drill - Angle Fraction Ball Aiming System - Pool & Billiard training lesson

03:48
To use this aiming system for Frozen Rail Cut Shots, you just have to remember the serie of numbers 3 diamonds away from the object ball : On perpendicular line 0 (0°) - 4 (7°) - 8 (14°) - 12 (22°) - 17 (30°) - 23 (39°) - On parallel line 42 (49°) - 51 (60°) - 60 (75°) . Practice this exercise on both sides of the table. This Pool lesson is a useful instruction for Poolplayers about how to aim Cut Shot. At the end, some tricky shots for challenge and fun. No rules has been broken.” pertinent WPA World Standardized Rules entry: 2.2 Nine Ball Rack The object balls are racked as tightly as possible in a diamond shape, with the one ball at the apex of the diamond and on the foot spot and the nine ball in the middle of the diamond. The other balls will be placed in the diamond without purposeful or intentional pattern.
