Free Wales Army

07:48
The drowning of the Cwm Celyn valley and the Capel Celyn village to make a reservoir for Liverpool despite all Welsh MP's voting against the scheme made many people feel that Wales had no democratic voice. This event led to the founding of the Free Wales Army, who orchestrated a bombing campaign throughout the 60's and 70's. In 1963, reporter John Mead, managed to interview some alleged members of the foundling FWA. Yn y Chwechdegau boddwyd Cwm Celyn a phentref Capel Celyn er mwyn creu cronfa ddwr i Lerpwl, a hynny er gwaethaf y ffaith fod pob aelod seneddol o Gymru wedi pledleisio yn erbyn y syniad. Gymaint oedd y dicter ynglyn a hyn fel yr aeth rhai ati i sefydlu Byddin Rhyddid Cymru, yr FWA. Roedd yr FWA yn gyfrifol am ymgyrch fomio yn y 60au a'r 70au. Yn 1963 llwyddodd y newyddiadurwr John Mead i gyfweld a rhai aelodau honedig o'r FWA. Mae'r hawlfraint i'r archif yn berchen i ITV Cymru/Wales. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. Troops at evacuation of Havana

02:56
SUMMARY From Edison films catalog: The troops are turning into the Prado from a side street, where stands a triumphal arch erected by the Cubans; but which Gen. Brooke, the Military Governor of Cuba, would not permit to be finished, as he allowed no demonstrations of any kind. The soldiers are the First Texas troops. The streets are crowded with people. Many typical Cubans are seen lounging in the foreground, with here and there a Spaniard, if one may judge by sour looks and solemn demeanor. The buildings are all low stone structures, with heavy barred windows, from which are displayed small Cuban flags. An excellent picture of life in Havana, New Year Day, 1899. 150 feet. 22.50. Filmed January 1, 1899, in Havana, Cuba. NOTES Copyright: Thomas A. Edison; 20Jan1899; 7258. Sources used: Copyright catalog, motion pictures, 1894-1912; Musser, C. U.S. troops landing at Daiquirí, Cuba

01:00
SUMMARY From Edison films catalog: First U.S. Troops to land, June 22, 1898. Transports in the distance. Soldiers clamber up from boats on the long railroad pier and come forward. From The Phonoscope, October 1898, p. 15: These are the first U.S. troops to land on Cuban soil, June 22, 1898. The picture shows a long perspective view of the pier at Baiquiri [sic], the point chosen so strategically for the landing of General Shafter's army. At the end of the wharf are the coal dumps and ore elevators used by the mining company operating the famous iron mines at Juragua, five miles away. On the right of the picture is seen the stern of a huge transport as she rides at anchor, and in the distance, stretching far out to the horizon, are other vessels of the fleet. (C. Musser, Edison motion pictures 1890-1900, p. 450) From the Theodore Roosevelt Association Film Collection catalog, p. 162: U.S. troops in lifeboats are landing at a wooden pier in Daiquiri, Cuba; the men are part of Gen. William R. Shafter's expeditionary force sent to fight in Cuba during the Spanish-American War in June, 1898. The men alight from boats as earlier arrivals walk along the dock toward the camera; the soldiers are equipped with blanket rolls, haversacks, and rifles. One of the transport ships is visible in the background next to a high metal pier. Daiquiri was recommended to General Shafter as a landing site by Gen. Calixto Garcia because of the two piers built by an American mining company and the availability of fresh water. The actual landing proved to be disordered, but was fortunately unopposed by Spanish troops. NOTES Copyright: Thomas A. Edison; 5Aug1898; 46690. Original main title lacking. Camera, William Paley. Military camp at Tampa, taken from train

SUMMARY From Edison films "war extra" catalog: A wide plain, dotted with tents, gleaming white in the bright sunshine. Soldiers moving about everywhere, at all sorts of duties. In the background looms up a big cigar factory; giving the prosaic touch to the picture needful to bring out in sharp contrast the patriotism with which the scene inspires us. The camera was on a rapidly moving train, so the panoramic view is a wide one, and remarkably brilliant. 50 feet. NOTES Copyright: Thomas A. Edison; 20May1898; 31446. Filmed ca. John Shaw Billings: The Early Years & the National Medical Library (NLM, 1983)

23:44
This film profiles the work of John Shaw Billings in the development of foremost medical library in the world. Born in Indiana in 1838, Billings attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, at age fourteen, graduating in 1857. He then attended the Medical College of Ohio, graduating in 1860. He joined the army at the start of the Civil War in 1861 and was assigned to the medical corps. He served in various capacities, most notably, as a surgeon at the Battle of Gettysburg. The letters to his wife present a graphic picture of soldiers' injuries during that battle. After the war, Billings served in the Office of the Surgeon General and was placed in charge of the library. It was his goal to make the library as complete as possible. In the course of his work, he created the Index Catalog, the Index Medicus, and a nascent interlibrary loan system. In 1885, he lobbied Congress for a larger library that served until 1962, when the National Library of Medicine moved to Bethesda, Maryland. In 1895, Billings retired from the army and the Library but went on to design and develop other libraries and hospitals. John Shaw Billings died in 1913. Produced by the National Library of Medicine. Fire ravages Library of Congress December 24, 1851 This Day in History

02:08
Fire ravages Library of Congress December 24, 1851 This Day in History A devastating fire at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., destroys about two-thirds of its 55,000 volumes, including most of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library, sold to the institution in 1815. The Library of Congress was established in 1800, when President John Adams approved legislation that appropriated $5,000 to purchase “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress.” The first books, ordered from London, arrived in 1801 and were stored in the U.S. Capitol, the library’s first home. The first library catalog, dated April 1802, listed 964 volumes and nine maps. Twelve years later, the British army invaded the city of Washington and burned the Capitol, including the 3,000-volume Library of Congress. Former president Thomas Jefferson, who advocated the expansion of the library during his two terms in office, responded to the loss by selling his personal library, the largest and finest in the country, to Congress to “recommence” the library. The purchase of Jefferson’s 6,487 volumes was approved in the next year, and a professional librarian, George Watterston, was hired to replace the House clerks in the administration of the library. In 1851, a second major fire at the library destroyed about two-thirds of its books. Congress responded quickly and generously to the disaster, and within a few years a majority of the lost books were replaced. After the Civil War, the collection was greatly expanded, and by the 20th century the Library of Congress had become the de facto national library of the United States and one of the largest in the world. Today, the collection, housed in three enormous buildings in Washington, contains more than 17 million books, as well as millions of maps, manuscripts, photographs, films, audio and video recordings, prints, and drawings.
