(13 Sep 2018) MARKLE THE MUSE: HOW MEGHAN MARKLE IS IMPRESSING DESIGNERS AND SETTING TRENDS
People magazine recently declared Meghan Markle the best dressed star of 2018 and a number of designers at New York Fashion Week agree that the Duchess of Sussex has a sense of style.
"I like her sensibility," said Naeem Khan. "Because she's a princess, she has certain restrictions of what she should wear, but tons of stuff in my collection and many things that can be adapted to her."
Markle has turned heads for her ability to pull off both high and low fashion by brands ranging from Dior, Jason Wu and Carolina Herrera to Club Monaco, J. Crew and Everlane.
She recently stunned in an Altuzarra pantsuit and Tory Burch says she has a similar outfit in her spring 2019 collection that could fit the new royal.
"I think she's fantastic and I like her minimalist style. I think she's very chic the way she wears monochromatic looks so, I don't know, maybe Julianne (Moore) was wearing one of our tuxedo suits and that sounds like it would work for her."
Dennis Busso says Markle knows what looks good on her and understands how her clothing should fit.
"Because of her position she needs to be chic and smart and I think that's an open question, but I think that she's done a very good job at what she's wearing. You know, I like her in the bateau neck. I like her with a slim look and I love her with the below-the-knee length. It shows her beautiful figure. It's sophisticated and maybe with a short, little jacket to match, chic, easygoing. She likes practical, elegant clothes."
Two designers who've benefited from a little Markle PR sparkle are Self Portrait and Veronica Beard.
The Duchess wore a pleated, green, floral Self Portrait dress to an Invictus Games event last spring that retailed for only $389 USD. The dress is actually off-the-shoulder, but Markle paired it with an Alexander McQueen blazer for a more modest look.
"The response from the customers was crazy, yeah," marveled the brand's designer, Han Chong. "The dress sold out like five times," he laughed.
Last winter, Markle also wore a black A-line mid-length Self Portrait dress to Christmas lunch with her future in-laws. It featured a short-sleeve, guipure bodice with nude lining and a black solid crepe skirt.
Another fashion house that Markle has brought to the public's attention is Veronica Beard. She wore a pair of the line's black nautical-inspired trousers with pearl detail on her first official visit to Edinburgh.
Markle first turned heads when she wore a short suit by the brand on a trip to New York in 2016.
"No one looks better in a Veronica Beard short suit than Meghan Markle," said Veronica Swanson, one of its co-designers. "She embodies so much of what we really try to address in the women that we dress and she looks amazing. She's so modern, she's so beautiful so we're thrilled whenever she wears something Veronica Beard."
Markle is known for wearing neutrals, but designer Michelle Smith of Milly thinks she'd like to brighten her up.
"I'd put her in a beautiful color. A beautiful, vibrant color from this collection for sure. I think she looks gorgeous in color. I would love to dress her. So, Meghan, if you're watching look me up. (Laughs)."
Michael Kors would also like to dress Markle and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, and believes his spring 2019 ready-to-wear line is perfect for the ladies.
