Carnivorous Snail Eats Hermit Crab Alive!

04:23
For licensing or usage, contact [email protected] These carnivorous snails (Agaronia propatula) are found on beaches throughout the Pacific coast of Central America. They move slowly through the wet sand until they encounter a potential prey item at which point they pounce. After grabing their prey, they force it toward the back of their pseudopod (foot) which forms a large pouch that will eventually engulf the food item. The snail will then bury itself into the sand where it will enjoy its meal in peace. These snails can even be convinced to attack a human finger (https://youtu.be/2TUGKXcD5F4)!

Sea Stars and Snails Trailer

01:06
Sea stars are one of the more enjoyable animals to see in tide pools. They are sometimes brightly colored and can get pretty large if there is good food supply. They have however almost vanished from the west coast of the United States due to a mysterious disease that has all but whipped them out. One this episode of Life in a Tide Pool follow the host and local experts to find out why the sea stars are vanishing and when and if they will return. Visit a local aquarium to see what types of sea stars are found in tide pools and learn how the aquarium grows and cares for the sea starts. Also on this episode learn about the types of snails commonly found in tide pools including the predatory snails that feed on mussels, clams and barnacles. Learn how to easily identify predatory and non-predatory snails just on the shape of the shell. The host and local experts visit Shaws cove ( http://californiatidepools.com/shaws-cove-tidepools/ ) and search for shells in surge channels and learn why surge channels are the best place to find sea shells. For more information, visit the website at: http://www.lifeinatidepool.com/sea-stars-snails/ and also visit our tide pool website for snails at: http://californiatidepools.com/sea-stars/ and for snails at: http://californiatidepools.com/snails/

Sea Star Wasting Disease Update 2017

08:10
(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv) The largest non-commercial marine mass mortality event on record (as of 2013) created a ‘natural experiment’ and an opportunity to study genomic changes in wild populations with unprecedented detail. Rather than observing only the aftermath—a team of researchers from UC Merced is reconstructing the population and genetic consequences of an epidemic outbreak of sea star wasting disease. The team measured the abundance and genetic variation of Pisaster ochraceus, a keystone species, in the year preceding mass mortality. They then repeated sampling of adults and juveniles in subsequent years, measuring population dynamics and genomic shifts during and after the disease outbreak. At a time when marine diseases and mass mortalities are on the rise, this study documents the impact of little-known wildlife diseases and potential trajectory of recovery in a keystone marine species. Eelgrass adventures - Moon snail in the eellgrass..

01:38
Exploring the eelgrass beds of British Columbia and the creatures that live in it. Moon Snail (Euspira lewisii) One of the best-known invertebrates in the sandy intertidal zone is the Moon Snail, both because it is a large (up to 13 cm in diameter) species and because its egg masses are especially notable. This light brown species is close to spherical, with most of the shell taken up by the first whorl. The aperture is large, with a large, horny operculum on the foot that closes the shell. The foot and mantle have hollow sinuses into which water can be pumped to expand them greatly out and over the shell, forming a plow-like structure with which they push forward while moving through the sand surface. When disturbed, the snail retracts this structure quickly by squirting the contained water forcefully outward. Moon Snails are voracious predators on the clams that share their habitat. They find a clam, presumably by chemoreception, and envelope it in their big foot and often drag it more deeply into the sand. The radula has seven rows of teeth, with which they dig a hole (easily recognizable as made by this species because countersunk) into the clam shell. A gland on the proboscis secretes enzymes and even hydrochloric acid to help accomplish this. The snail then rasps and sucks out the clam's tissues over a period of a day or so. They take relatively thin-shelled clams up to 5 cm in length and can eat one every four days in the laboratory. They also eat other snails and, in some circumstances, herring eggs. They are big enough not to have many predators, but Sunflower Stars will attack them, the snail sometimes able to repel one by using its radula to rasp the tube feet of the sea star. Moon Snails move out into deeper water in winter, then come back toward the shore in summer, when they are breeding. The sexes are separate, and it can be seen from mating pairs that females are slightly larger and thinner-shelled than males. The eggs are laid in characteristic large (to 15 cm diameter) sand collars, sandwiched between two layers of sand cemented together by mucous secretions. The collar, somewhat like a flattened clerical collar with a big opening in the center, contains great numbers of eggs that hatch into veliger larvae within the sand. As the sand disintegrates over a period of weeks, the larvae are released into the water column. The larvae move into deeper water and feed as herbivores on diatoms and Sea Lettuce for a while, then switch to carnivory as they grow. Moon Snails were eaten by Native Americans, but as they feed on clams, they may accumulate the poisons that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning, so they should be avoided.

Falling Star - Sea Biscuit Seastar.

00:52
The ‘Stars’ of the ocean and their cute little tube feet. Seastars are unique creatures and function pretty weirdly compared to you and I. Humans posses blood which transports nutrients, sugars, oxygen and other essentials around our bodies and into our cells. Without it we die… What make Seastars unique is that, Seastars don’t have actually have any blood. Instead, they employ a “water vascular system” to get the job done. Whats a water vascular system? Well in short, its when an echinoderm utilizes water from the surrounding ocean to transport the life essentials around their carapace (body). This same function also allows the seastar to ‘stick’ to almost anything, by pumping the same water through their tube feet to create suction. Ever tried eating your own weight in food?? Well, this is how anemones attempt do it. She would get there eventually. These videos were shot and edited at Queensland's University of Technology. Sea stars (also known as starfish) are spiny, hard-skinned animals that live on the rocky sea floor. These invertebrates are NOT fish; they are echinoderms. Sea stars move very slowly along the sea bed, using hundreds of tiny tube feet. There are over 2,000 different species of sea stars worldwide.
