How To Read Dates In English - Spoken English Lesson

05:04
See the full lesson (with a text and exercises) here: http://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/video-reading-dates When is your birthday? This is a simple question, but many English learners cannot answer without making a mistake. In this lesson, you can learn how to read dates, months and years correctly in English. In this video, you can learn: - The different ways to read dates - When and where to use the word 'the' in dates - The rules for pronouncing years - How to shorten dates Let's start with an example date: November 14th How can you say it? There are two common possibilities: - "November the fourteenth" - "The fourteenth of November" Both are correct, and it doesn't matter which you use. The most important point is that the words the and of are almost never written. If you see September 30th written, you need to add the words the and/or of when you read the date: - "September the thirtieth" - "The thirtieth of September" What about years? How would you say these years? - 1902 - 1980 - 2001 - 1902—"nineteen oh two" - 1980—"nineteen eighty" - 2001—"two thousand and one" How you read a year depends on whether you are talking about a year before or after 2000—we use different rules for different years. Find the details in the video! You can also shorten dates, for example: - 1981—eighty-one - "My brother was born in eighty-one" - 2001—oh-one - "I graduated in oh-one" You can also find more of our free English lessons on this page: http://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/free-english-lessons

How To Pronounce '-ED' Verb Endings - English Pronunciation Lesson

05:34
See the full lesson, which includes the text and a quiz, here: http://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/video-pronounce-past-verbs In this lesson, you can learn more about the pronunciation of past verbs and '-ed' endings. Past simple verbs often end in '-ed', but this ending is not pronounced in the same way every time. For example, in the verbs: - planned - asked - decided The '-ed' ending is pronounced differently in each case. - planned — the -ed ending is pronounced with a /d/ sound, like the 'd' in 'dog' - asked — the -ed ending is pronounced with a /t/ sound, like the 't' in 'time' - decided — the -ed ending is pronounced with an /ɪd/ sound, like the 'id' in 'did' The pronunciation of the '-ed' ending depends on the sound before it. If the sound before the '-ed' ending is a VOICED consonant sound, like /b/, /v/ or /m/, the '-ed' ending is pronounced with a /d/ sound. For example, in 'planned', the sound before the '-ed' ending is /n/, which is a voiced consonant sound. That's why the '-ed' ending in 'planned' is pronounced with a /d/ sound. If the sound before the '-ed' ending is an UNVOICED consonant sound, like /p/, /k/ or /s/, then the '-ed' ending is pronounced with a /t/ sound. For example, in 'asked', the sound before the '-ed' ending is /k/, which is an unvoiced consonant sound. That's why the '-ed' ending in 'asked' is pronounced with a /t/ sound. If you're not sure about the difference between voiced and unvoiced sounds, you can learn more in the video. It's not so easy to explain in writing! For reference, here's a list of voiced and unvoiced consonant sounds: Voiced consonants: /b/ /d*/ /g/ /ð/ /v/ /l/ /r/ /z/ /dʒ/ /ʒ/ /m/ /n/ /ŋ/ Unvoiced consonants: /p/ /t*/ /k/ /s/ /ʃ/ /tʃ/ /θ/ /f/ Finally, if the sound before the '-ed' ending is /d/ or /t/, the '-ed' ending is pronounced /ɪd/. This is the easiest rule to remember. You can find more of our free English lessons on our website here: http://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/free-english-lessons

How to Use Can, Could and Be Able To - English Modal Verbs for Ability

09:21
In this lesson, you can learn how to use can and could English modal verbs to talk about ability. You will also learn about the verbs be able to and managed to to talk about ability. These verbs are not modal verbs, but we cannot use the modal verbs can or could in every situation to talk about ability, so sometimes we need to use a different verb. See the full version of this lesson here: https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/modal-verbs-can-could-be-able-to In this video, you will see: 1) How to use can to talk about abilities in the present or future 2) How to use could to talk about abilities in the past 3) When you need to use the verbs be able to or managed to 4) The difference between can or could, and be able to 5) The two different meanings of could Can and could are used to talk about abilities in the past, present or future. Sometimes, there isn't a form of can, and we need to use the verb be able to. For example, can doesn't have a present perfect form, so if you want to use can in the present perfect, you need to use be able to. In other forms, can or could and be able to generally have the same meaning. However, if you are talking about abilities in the past, could and be able to are sometimes different. We use could to talk about general abilities in the past, while if you want to talk about a specific ability at a specific time, you need to use be able to. The full lesson includes a text and a quiz, so that you can practise what you have learned. See more of our free English lessons on this page: http://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/free-english-lessons

How To Use Commas - English Writing Lesson

11:58
Learn how to use commas correctly in this English lesson. You can see the full lesson (which includes the text and a quiz) here: https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/video-lesson-how-to-use-commas Commas are difficult to use correctly in English - why is this? It's because commas do different jobs in the sentence. These different types of comma follow different rules. So, to use commas correctly in English, you need to understand the different types of comma and what they do. 1. The listing comma The listing comma is used to separate items on a list. For example: - "We need two cucumbers, four tomatoes, some onions and a lettuce." - "We spent our time relaxing on the beach, swimming in the sea and drinking coffee in the seaside cafés." You can see that we use a comma between every item on the list, except for the last two; there isn't a comma before 'and'. In American English, there could also be a comma before 'and'. 2. The joining comma The joining comma is used to link two complete sentences, together with a linking word. For example: - "We were tired, and we really didn't feel like going anywhere." - "He seemed nice, but he just wasn't my type." We often use the joining comma with linking words such as 'but', 'and', 'or', 'although' and others. You can't use a joining comma with all linking words. For example, 'however' cannot be used with a comma. 3. The bracketing comma The bracketing comma is used to add extra information to a sentence. For example: - "This book, first published in 1956, is still useful for students today." — We add the extra phrase 'first published in 1956' between a pair of commas. - "One of my colleagues, who used to be a semi-professional footballer, invited me to play in their 5-a-side team this weekend." — We add the extra information 'who used to be a semi-professional footballer' in between a pair of commas. You'll learn more about how to use these different types of comma in the video lesson. You can also learn about common mistakes which English learners make with commas, so that you can avoid them.
